Toyota unveils Majesta S-Class and 7-series rival
In most markets, the best Toyota sedan you could buy would be a Camry or Avalon but in Japan (and a few other select markets) you could step into one of several luxury flagship saloons based around Toyota’s Crown platform.

The Crown is sold in a variety of models including a hybrid version and the top-end Century and Majesta, and in its home market it’s held in a similar league to cars like the Mercedes Benz S-Class and BMW 7-series – at least in terms of technology.

Well, Toyota definitely has a wealth of vehicles in its homeland we will more than likely not see imported here for various reason (dollar to the yen, design taste, etc) but as you can see, there isn't a dearth of technology. Very interesting and intriguing as well.

The LS460 competes with the S class and 7 series. The GS350/GS460 compete on the next level down. How many big sedans does Toyota need? Here in the US I don't think Toyota wants more cars that compete with Lexus models.

Lexus is also Toyota with different logo, and Lexus is rivalling S-Class or 7-series, so basicaly Toyota Lexus LS is rivalling S-Class or 7-series.

Lexus is a different brand that offers a different buyer experience than Toyota. You don't get nearly the same service at the Toyota dealership as the Lexus one. That is one reason that Lexus buyer's are so pleased with the brand.

pretty lame comment

Just because the parent company is Toyota doesn't equate into a direct translation with a different badge and name.

Yeah, because everyone drives at the g-limit of their vehicles and through loops on the way to work. (insert gigantic eye-roll here)

How crazy would are roads be if people actually drove as nutty as the self-described "enthusiasts" here say!!

Grow up dude.

204E60, I know you didn't say one thing about driving "loops" or "g-limit" or "how crazy would are roads be, or driving 1/4 miles at a time, but some of us don't get cars to help us enjoy life with intriguing design or involving driving experience. I just want to get to starbucks and put my venti mocha latte in my cup holder for my daily buzz. By the way, my DOES have some world class styling elements (albeit lifted from other cars).

Sorry, about the typos. My Camry has world class design elements just like a 7 Series and 5 Series (trunk and tail lights). I get all the great design but with front wheel drive! See my photo!!

camrydriver, you are right in your assessments. RWD is so OVERRATED. what good is it if the car doesn't have enuff power to induce power oversteer? not to mention, even if it does, it worse than useless in SNOW country, it is a liability. why has practically the whole automotive world switched from traditional rwd to fwd? because it makes sense for 90+% of the vehicles on the road!

that said, honda has also proven that a fwd or awd vehicle can 'handle' and corner just as well as rwd. the only cars more popular than fwd toyotas and hondas (and other fwd sedans) here in interior alaska are awd subarus.
even europhiles get 4-matic benzes. NO one here buys bmws except poseurs. and they only drive them in the summer.

and yes, the camry IS more stylish than mundane 3s and 5s.

I luv how Toyota classed up my Camry by incorporating the 7 Series trunklid and 5 Series taillights! Awesome! FWD is great, the torque-steer makes it feel POWERFUL when it tugs on the steering wheel. ;-D AS for the rest of your comments, I don't know what oversteer means and you are right about Honda and front drive - the NSX and S2000 were fine driving sporty cars.

such a stupid statement.

the LS came out before the avalon. the GS is more uplevel too. and finally, the lexus ES and IS are SMALLER than the avalon.

just points out the level of stupidity of those who make like lexus = toyota.

Headlights could have been better but still nice car, seems like it shares many parts with LS460. Something like Land cruiser and LX570.
Toyota also has some other good sedans like premio, Mark X which they don't export officially.

Just fyi for all of you: the new LS is not based on the Crown anymore. It is its own car, on its own platform, developed by a team of Lexus engineers and designers, not Toyota engineers or designers. All previous-generation LSs were derivatives of Toyota Crowns, but the new one is not, following along with Lexus's continued separation from Toyota that initiated in 2007.

There is something about RWD - V8 Sound & leather and a toned down trac. control system that makes these Toyotas fun to slide around, i'm from B'desh so I've driven these, especially the Turbo Chaser or Mark II, which are fun.

Who thinks Lexus and Toyota are different? They have different dealerships, but Lexus is just a name for Toyotas built in Japan, rather than US or Canada.
In Asia, you see the Toyota ES300 and Toyota LS models. They don't pretend its anything different "at home".
So, is this the new LS or ES or what?
They can't sell these here (profitably) because of the exchange rate, unless they charge much higher prices ... hence the splitting of Lexus and Toyota dealerships in the US.
