Like A Fat Person In Shorts? Infiniti's G37 Convertible Fails To Impress
Fat people in shorts, missile testing, horse farms and fake tans. That pretty much sums up the 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible, the latest hard top convertible from Japan.

Rounding a corner quickly somewhere in the part of Malibu that looks like Kentucky, there's suddenly a fat chick in a sweaty halter-top waddling down the middle of the road. A screeching halt and, out of nowhere, there's cops. Waving at us. They seem to want us to pass tubby. Not wanting to interrupt this interesting flow of events we do what they want and proceed down the road, considerably slower than before.

"The Biggest Loser: Marathon" mile markers we'd been passing fairly regularly for the last few miles should have been a clue, but pushing the Infiniti's communicative front into, then working the rear tires with the revvy 325 HP V6 out of the 90 degree, perfectly flat corners, passing horses standing behind white board fences and getting a sunburn was proving too much of a distraction.

Why are they afraid to show a straight side shot of the car with the top up? I'm not talking about the 3/4 rear shot which is the only picture that shows the car with the top up.

Out of 17 pictures in the article there is only one picture with the top up. And that picture is a low to the ground rear 3/4 shot that doesn’t even show the roof. What are they hiding?

Apparently 009 is biased again, intending to disgrace any great thing from far east, cause MOTOR TREND just thinks the other way:

"If you want a rear-drive luxury convertible that doubles as a secure, all-weather, everyday car, it's just about your only choice. Well, this, or a BMW 3 Series."

LexSucks.......aside from the Mercedes SL, the G37 is as close as you're going to get to affordable symmetry in the hardtop convertible class. The only prolem in that picture is that the color of the car makes the cross sections stand out. The BMW 335 convertible looks just as bad in white....the only difference being the BMW looks weird.

That VW Cabrio looks smooth. It also opens half-way like a giant sunroof. I've yet to see any other hard-top covertible do that. Too bad its a chick car.

The G37 Cabrio doesn't do anything for me. Too round and soft looking with zero aggressiveness. I'll take the BMWs over that any day. The G37 design in general has gone soft IMO. The G35 looked more athletic IMO.

that is a terrible color for it. black would be much nicer, except in california, where that would be banned for hilarious reasons...

Agent009,

How did it fail to impress?

This is what they said at the end of the article:

"The G37 needs to define itself in a similar way; it's better than its competitors in every easily definable way — better looking than a 335i, better handling than an A4, faster than an IS250, less boring than a CLK — but seeks to achieve nothing greater on its own."

If the G37 failed to impress, then the 335i, A4, IS250, and CLK must all be real junk.

You beat me to it. I don't understand this dude's reasoning. He talks about how greater this car is to its competitors, but, somehow fails to impress him?

In summary: The G37 Convertible is a bad-ass machine.

I am sorry to say, but I fail to see this car as better looking than a 335. As far as better handling than an A4 convertible which is 6 years old, it can't be a surprise neither. As far as the Lexus and the Benz, those are easily agreeable statement. So I don't see the big deal. But I would still take a 335 home at the end of the day. Until the A5 convertible shows up.

If you read the article. It strove to better the competition at the expense of not defining itself. A common pitfall from a maker that targets goals but doesn't set any in the process.

To become and innovator you must strive to be the best and be the target not just hit it.

What crack are you on? And so you're telling me other than 335, which was quoted as the target, that every other effort is a piece of shit? I think you better be able to explain that to owner of Merceds, Lexus, AUDI, and of course, INFINITI.

B I A S E D.

Agent 009, I am not sure where you got the tag line for this article. I was not able to find it anywhere in the article. The review stated "better looking than a 335i, better handling than an A4, faster than an IS250, less boring than a CLK" which seems like an endorsement of the vehicle. The best part is Infiniti will still give you all of that at a much lower sticker price.
I am not sure what "unique" way this reviewer expected the car to stand out. He readily admits the car is better than its competitors. Maybe Infiniti should have had it shoot flames out the ass end... That would be unique...

I wish the Autospies guys would give up on editorializing with the titles. They totally misrepresent the articles.

"The G37 needs to define itself in a similar way; it's better than its competitors in every easily definable way — better looking than a 335i, better handling than an A4, faster than an IS250, less boring than a CLK — but seeks to achieve nothing greater on its own. Attempting merely to be better than others, rather than fulfilling the promise of its own potential in some unique way. If it pushed the limits in one specific direction at the expense of another, we'd probably love it. But, as it is, its smile is just a little too white, its tan just a little too bronze."

The combination of a flame-bating article title and a poorly written (and borderline psychotic) orignial article leads to one of the most confusing stories ever posted on autospies.

The car itself is damn nice. Even in that color, I'd gladly take one.

My God, LexSucks, give it a rest. It doesn't even look that bad with the top up. The only four-seat hardtop convertible that looks less like patchwork is the Volvo C70.

It is a nice car no doubt so I would knock that bad, but when you compete in the luxury league you don't merely strive for a target. You have to exceed it and then improve on it and set a standard with almost every iteration. Brands like BMW, Mercedes and even Audi understand this. Infiniti still appears to be aiming at targets with no real cohesive goal.

DocMarten- Read the comment from the reviewer about failing to define itself, maybe that best sums it up. You can achieve your goals but failing to define yourself will probably be a critical flaw.

This is the most pathetic write up I have ever seen. I thought this was a car sight. For someone to post crap like this, when the article clearly states that the G37 is better than its competition, is just ridiculous. How about being unbiased in a write up for a change. Sorry to break it to you, but the G37 is better!! So get over it! Directly from the article:

"The G37 needs to define itself in a similar way; it's better than its competitors in every easily definable way — better looking than a 335i, better handling than an A4, faster than an IS250, less boring than a CLK — but seeks to achieve nothing greater on its own."

This falls into the same category as a newspaper writer who plagiarized somebody's work and took credit as his story. In this case, we just have some stupid wannabe car journalist who probably owns some clunker. Keep dreaming "ButtHead009"; you only wish of owning a really nice car like a G37, BMW, Audi or Benz.
