We Pose The Question- "What Car Buying Decisions DO YOU REGRET?"

We Pose The Question-
A couple of weeks ago I was driving down the freeway when I was passed by a blue Subaru WRX.  I had noticed the WRX in my rear view mirror as it overtook my car as the driver was weaving in and out of traffic driving faster than what was probably safe given the traffic load.

What caught my attention as the WRX passed was the writing on the rear window done in white shoe polish which stated for all the world to see, "I Should Have Bought the STI."

I attempted to catch up with the WRX in an attempt to get a picture of the rear window however as the freeway split approached I needed to head in a direction different from the driver of the WRX and as such no picture was captured.

The sentiment the driver of the WRX expressed is a feeling I think we all have felt at one point or another throughout our adult lives.

The driver of the WRX realized post purchase his poor decision in not getting the STI - but he is not alone.

I know for me automotive regret set in in 2006 when the newly designed 3-Series made its US appearance.  The need to have the newest BMW meant settling for an automatic versus the manual transmission I would have preferred.  Granted every other option on the car is as I would have ordered it and the color combination was perfect as well so to go without the manual was a fair trade off I was able to live with.  At least that was the way I justified the purchase at the time.

Of course after that new car appeal wore off the decision to settle for the automatic transmission was a decision I regretted - and no matter how good a car that 330i was with an automatic, the manual makes it so much more fun.

While the transmission choice for you may not be that important, other issues come into play for each one of us, subtle nuances we all look for in defining the ideal vehicle - and having to settle for a car without that thing you look for is a tough one as the driver of the WRX obviously had learned.

Now I don't expect you to run out with shoe polish and display to the world your feelings on the back window of your current ride, but checking in here to let us know your regrets is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

For me the BMW was just one of many regrettable decisions made regarding cars in my life, another one that sticks out time and again is the late 80's Porsche 944 I had found with extremely low miles in mint condition for less than $5k.  The owner didn't realize the gem he had, and I didn't act fast enough to snap up a car I had lusted after since childhood, and the following day when I called to state my intention to purchase, my heart broke when I was told it had been sold already.

So go ahead, enlighten us to the regrets you have in terms of cars.

After you get done, be sure to check out our exciting galleries including the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the 2010 BMW Z4

My automotive regret is trading my '04 X3 for the '07 BMW X3 3.0si automatic. It jerks, hesitates and lags and BMW still says it's operating to factory standards. I'm getting the Q5 or the GLK.

1973 Chevy Corvette 454 convertible. Broke me financially and mentally. Good lesson, though. I never bought another car since without thinking long deep and hard about it. Never regretted buying any of my cars since.

The worst I've ever owned include a 73 Jensen Healey, 77 Porsche 924, 99 Volvo XC, and 02 Chevy Trailblazer. The best, my 08 Subaru Outback Limited. Stylish, comfortable, practical, versatile, economical, and bullet-proof reliability. However, there are times when I wish I'd gotten an XT instead....like if I was passed by an WRX!

reminthorn has it right on that 73 Jensen Healy..had mine a week before getting rid of it...upshifts would open up the throttle and the only solution was turning it off and then starting it back up (while getting on the freeway) with a clutch start. Funny, also have an Outback...an 05...favorite car since my 1976 2002...but also regret not getting the XT. Son has a WRX and regrets not getting the STi...and three Chrysler minivans over the years...total crap but a friend was the dealer, so bought them because of him....minivan days are behind us.

| Worst cars: we had a BMW 530i which was always in the
| shop. Comfort was terrible, interior was cheap and it was
| also overpriced.

It's still good you came alive out of driving this BMW! Mine had broken down even before I put an order in for it.

worst car I had...01 Acura CL Type S...I had picked it over a 2001 330Ci at the time thinking I had just saved $7000. What the f--k was I thinking. It was fun for a bit, engine great, but then the cheap interior drove me crazy along with general fit and finish. I was out of that car in 20 months

I AGREE! Bought the car over the 3 series as well - now I'm on my third transmission (yes 3rd) and the fit and finish are horrible - looking to replace it now. Couldn't stand it so I bought a Jeep - best vehicle, but it also broke.

I hated the IS250 I bought. It cost over $600 to get the brakes changed and all of the dealers were arrogant.

#1 Buying an Audi S4, what a piece of garbage, never again Audi.
#2 Buying a Land Rover -- I'd heard about what crap their reliability was and it was worst than the worst horror stories I'd heard.

'07 Mazda CX-7 (Lease finish) - Not designed for NYC traffic/stop go driving. Extreme electronic throttle lag - random blinding smoke from exhaust (definitely blown turbo). Again, horrible throttle lag - man, kinda glad it is gone. '06 BMW 530i SMG (lease finish) = good for few months, then scary "clutch overheating" signs on the display - then full clutch damage, it had throttle lag, but in a fun type of way (there would be a rush of power after the initial lag), not like the unusual CX-7.
Now have a '09 Legacy w/ manual trans. no complaints because very cheap pmts. Waiting for next, more powerful Lex GS V8 to lease. O, best are my 2 Man'l trans V6 Camrys (no lag, nice motor sound & one of them around 300,xxx miles [93 V6 SE], & '00 V6 LE 5spd, w/ lthr.)

I regret getting the DSG over the Manual. The DSG is great when im driving and talking on the fone and the shifts are lightning fast, But i must say, not pressing a clutch takes away ALOT from driving. Got caught in the hype of dual clutch gearbox's.

Best cars: Toyota MR2 (original model was fun, fun, fun). Triumph TR6 (beautiful design). BMW 328i (you know why). BMW X5 (best handling SUV and very reliable). Nissan Pathfinder (bulletproof).

Worst cars: Triumph TR6 (mechanical disaster). Triumph Spitfire (mechanical and electrical disaster). Saturn SL2 (poor quality). Both of my Mazda mini-pickup trucks (early engine failures - one rotary, one piston).

Worst car we've had: '91 Dodge Grand Caravan. It basically fell apart in the first year with a cracked steering column, an exhaust that fell off the car while we were driving, and a bad transmission. After 70k miles it burnt a quart of oil every week, and after 8 years it was no longer reliable enough to drive anywhere outside of town. It's replacement, a Honda Odyssey wasn't far behind (transmission issues part II, combined with lots of road noise problems).

Best car: '95 Mercedes E300 diesel. Super reliable, with only a few issues (brakes, tie rods, a few hoses). Comfortable ride, excellent fuel economy, and one of the best-built interiors I've ever experienced. My mom's still driving it, and with 135k miles it's as reliable as it was when we first got it.

worst car 2001 BMW 330Ci Convertible, 5 Bent wheels 4 suspension A rms were replaced do to failed bushings. 2 A rms replaced for bending. Power passenger seat died at 3000 miles!! Never was fixed right. The kidney grill popped out, the CD changer in the trunk broke after I went arround a corner so hard it jamed the CD and it never worked again. Power stearing pump went, water pump went, rear differential seals went, then the next week the seals on the other side of the differential went and had to take it back.Alomst died every time it snowed. 3 wheel bearings went Kaput and the a/c hoses leaked. Did i mention it was a lemon and drive a lovely 08 WRX now that rocks in the snow?

Best Car 03 Lexus LX470 it is a tank with over 150,000 miles on it. Nothing broke accept a chintsy plastic clip to the HVAC bent and the mechanisim that lowers the spare tire. It was out of warrentee with 120,000 miles on it and I wrote a letter to Lexus North America that the spare tire carrier should have never broke because it was only used 2 times. They gave me a full refund of over 350 dollars out of goodwill. Who ever says lexus is snoby doesn't go to the right dealership. Lawrence Lexus in mercer county NJ is acceptional.

3 lemons in my lifetime 1 Ford, 1 BMW, 1 Sterling. The BMW was the most troublesome followed by the Sterling. Got rid of it at 14K miles after engine block cracked.

My tranmission was going bad in my paid for 2001 Honda Accrd EX loaded addition. Instead of getting it fixed, I sold it to carmax for $3000 and used it for a down payment on 2009 Lincoln MKZ. my regret...that I sold a paid for car, once I fixed the transmission probably would have never had anymore problems.
