REVIEW: Has The Hyundai Genesis Coupe STOLEN The Soul And Mojo Of The Original 240z And Infiniti G?

REVIEW: Has The Hyundai Genesis Coupe STOLEN The Soul And Mojo Of The Original 240z And Infiniti G?
When I was in University, while all my friends were buying Camaro's, Cutlass Supreme 442's, Chevy Mailbu's and Ford Mustangs and Maverick's, my heart was stolen by the Jaguar-esque Datsun 240z.

The design was super sexy, sleek and more refined than the American muscle.

I LUSTED after that car.

2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe

I would go miles out of my way to drive by the Datsun dealer hoping I could see one or drive one.

And it was a great car to drive.

It wasn't SUPER powerful like the Vette's or the Camaro's but in balance it felt like the better car, for all around driving.

And because of the driving position, it felt better compared to the sitting inside an Army bunker feeling you got in the driver and passenger seats of the Mustangs, Camaro's and Challengers.

To this day I HATE that super high dash in your face that makes you feel like you're looking through the peephole at a speakeasy.

And it turns out since then, the buying public has certainly voted with their wallets that the more Euro style driver position versus the traditional Pony car position.

The other thing that was great about the 240z was that it was priced right so it was attainable buy a large segment of buyers.

Kind of like a Corvette for the rest of us.

So as I got behind the wheel of the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe for the first time and looked around, I felt like I was going back in time to the days of the 240z.

But in the back of my mind I was snikering, this is a HYUNDAI...It's just going to be another one of those forgettable cars that were all show and no go.

BOY, was I WRONG!

The new Genesis Coupe is a car that is well executed in every single way from design to drive to interior to quality.

WHAT a great daily driver this car is!!!!

The 6 has great power with control, awesome brakes, phenomenal Infiniti stereo, and the feeling you could drive it in a cross country marathon and not be fatigued.

The drive reminded me a lot of the BMW 128i.

Especially in steering feel and suspension dynamics.

If you like BMW's you'll love the way this drives.

And it looks GREAT!

As I said, like a modern day 240z.

Now I know what you're going to say.

But you can buy a Z car today or an Infiniti G Coupe (which are great cars as well), so why would I choose the Hyundai?

Because a Z car configured right is 40 G's and has NO back seat!!!!

And the Infiniti even more!

And yes a BMW 3-Series Coupe is even more.

But that is the authentic item and just like a fine watch, you pay a premium for that.

So my advice to all the AutoSpies.com faithful...

If I was looking at the Mustang, Camaro and Challenger, I'd buy the Genesis Coupe.

The Camaro and Challenger are better looking but as I said earlier, I like the driving position of the GC, Z, G and 3 better, so I feel more comfortable driving that style of car and the GC is the better daily driver.

Plus it has a 10 year warranty and they will probably be in business then.

And if I was comparing the GC to a Z, G or 3 coupe my recommendation is two prong.

If you're the HAVE to have the authentic item kind of person, spend the extra money and get the 3.

But if you've been swooned by Nissan and Infiniti lately becuase of their bang for the buck factor against the BMW, drive right past those dealers and go directly to your Hyundai store and buy the Genesis Coupe.

You won't be sorry you saved all that money.

Yes, the Z and the G are a HAIR better but there is NO way they are worth 7-12k more than this awesome new soul/mojo stealer from Hyundai.

And did I mention that there is a 4-cylinder Genesis Coupe model that has LOTS of torque and is $22G's out the door!!!!

And the 4 with a manual tranny is FANTASTIC!

Nissan or Infiniti do not offer a 4 in their coupes.

Which makes the Hyundai more attainable to the masses like the original Z was.

Nissan and Infiniti you're on notice...they stole the soul and mojo of your original Z.

Had a 1972 Datsun 240Z, metallic olive green with saddle interior. Sublime vehicle, paid $3,500.00 new. Stolen in 1976, never found. Still mourning and cursing today.

Had a dog named Ol' Scratch. Great dog! He would run, and eat, and sleep and then get up and do it all over again. Got him free a guy down the street. Miss that SOB.

Good review 001!

I respect Hyundai alot for offering such a nice package for such a sweet price. And if you've driven Hyundai's of late, you'll notice how their quality/reliability improved alot, and they are on par with the Japanese.

Good job hyundai!

Nice review, much appreciated. One question/clarification to 001. Do you consider the 3.8 Track version a good daily driver?

Yes...it was a little stiff but not stiff enough to make me take it off the daily driver list

But make sure you test drive it first because suspension feel is a personal decision.

YELLOW! THAT's the color too.

Don't think the G, Z, or 3 have any reason to worry. As you stated, this is against the Mustang, Camaro, Challenger. I believe the main competitor to the Genesis is the Eclipse, and on that ground, Hyundai did a very good job.

Mark my words.

Nissan AND Infiniti will have lower cost, 4 cylinder units to compete.

Everything is going downmarket in the next 5 years.

It's inevitable in a socialist society. ;)

The Great Depression happened in a laissez-faire capitalist environment not socialism. Socialism clearly has issues with creating lack of motivation and innovation, but why say asinine, ignorant comments like that. The new administration was handed a steaming bag of horse sh!t by a superstitious, anti-intellectual despot of the last eight years and guess what........things suck now. FYI, spending DOES get an economy out of a depression, World War II was the biggest government spending in history up to that point and is consistently credited with ending the depression.

By the way, the drifting instructor personally owns the last generation M3 for his drifting and he told me the GC is as good as a drifting machine.

Video coming soon...stay tuned.

I still think they should have called it the Tiburon. Does noone else see the resemblance?

I do think it looks almost identical to the Tiburon and for the most part that is how I few it, as the new Tiburon.

It seems like it is essentially a new Tiburon. It is understandable though why Hyundai would rename it. "Tiburon" is already associated with a cheap and mediocre product from yesteryear. "Genesis Coupe" symbolizes a fresh start with a new and high-quality product.

You will never see a 4 cylinder Z. The Z has a heritage and it doesn't allow for a budget version. If they did that Nissan itself would be stealing the Z's mojo. Not Hyundai.

Look, the Genesis is a great car but let's not get all sensational about it. It's not real competition for the Z and it's not in the same market as the G. It will, however, hurt cars like the Altima and Accord coupes.

I don't think they've stolen the Mojo of the 240z or the Infiniti G but they are offering the car at an affordable price which is Hyundai's selling point.

Good to hear Genesis coupe drives great but i don't like the deisgn at all inside and out. Interior is not flowing, many different ideas there, and look at the second last picture, where dozen of Genesis coupes are parked, they just lack personality. Looks like some cheap colourful candies in a market.
all in all i think Genesis coupe's drivetrain and especially price is great but i hope the design was more inspired and unique. 3 series coupe, A5 and G37 coupe just blows it, even 370Z, Camaro and Challenger.

Hyundai is putting a lot into this car!

I think the point of this car is to make people take the company seriously as it tries to go up market...

Nissan shouldn't be the company who's always taken to task because of the Genesis Coupe. They have the GT-R, The G coupe and The 370Z.

It's Toyota and Honda who have egg on their faces. Shame on them for having nothing to offer in a RWD coupe and letting Hyundai leap frog them to market with a very credible RWD sport coupe.

that "percertual imagery" poster photo is dead on. It nice to see that they recognize fully their segment in the market. They even have their old Tiburon on the downside of the graph...so they dont have an over-inflated sense of ego.

I'm kind of conflicted. The writing in this review is very amateurish. But I think the Gen is exactly that, a modern form of the 240. At least in 2.0t form. It's amazing how much ignorant disdain there is for Hyundai when they are touted by every unbiased journalistic entity as one of the most reliable, best valued, and high quality car companies around. How is this NOT on the same plane as a G? It's got extremely comparable equipment and performance for $10k less. Different price-point? Definitely. Different class? not so much. The coupe competes with the Camaro, Z, G, and Mustang all at once without missing a beat. Eclipse? Really? 0_o

I'm with you.

Some people wouldn't respect the machine if it actually WAS a rebadged BMW; they'd still see a Hyundai logo and scoff.

This car is the underdog stock, but with a couple thousand put into engine mods, wheels, and coilovers... it easily outclasses anything under $70k. When people start seeing tastefully modded ones on the streets... it's going to be like seeing an exotic.

The reason it reminds you of the G35 is b/c its a Nissan skyline and both cars are pretty much equals here. Amazing to think the Hyundai interior is better than the old G35.
