2010 Chevrolet Equinox Priced $1,800 Lower Than Predecessor, More Tech
It looks like GM has chosen a more aggressive price approach with the all-new 2010 Chevrolet Equinox crossover that will start from $23,185, or $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox when it goes on sale in the U.S. this June.

Chevy expects its Equinox to have best-in-class fuel economy at 30 MPG with its advanced 4-cylinder, direct injected engine. It is available in LS, LT and LTZ trim, with available all-wheel-drive. Two new engines are offered, each with fuel-saving direct injection and variable valve timing technology. Vehicle highlights include:

* New 2.4L Ecotec direct injected I-4 engine estimated at 182 horsepower (135 kW), which delivers an estimated 30 mpg highway, 21 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* New 3.0L DOHC direct injected V-6 engine estimated at 264 horsepower (190 kW), which delivers an estimated 25 mpg highway, 18 mpg city (EPA certification pending)
* Driving range of more than 500 miles (800 km) with both engines, for less-frequent fill-ups
* Six standard air bags: dual frontal air bags; head curtain side air bags and pelvic/thorax seat-mounted side air bags
* Standard four-wheel disc brakes with StabiliTrak electronic stability control and traction control
* Standard OnStar and XM Satellite Radio
* "Advanced" remote starting system that also activates the HVAC system and optional heated seats depending on the outside temperature

Inside, the Equinox features attention to detail, including standard tilt and telescoping steering wheel, standard driver seat power height adjustment and power lumbar, and a number of storage bins: an oversized glove box, a closed storage bin in the instrument panel above the center stack, and closed storage under the center armrest large enough for a laptop computer.

"Getting best-in-class fuel economy and great storage for less than $24,000 is significant," Peper added. "In fact, the starting price for this all-new model is $1,800 less than the previous generation Equinox."

Despite the fact that the all-new Equinox carries a smaller price than its predecessor, the General supports that the list of standard equipment is longer including more airbags, power lumbar support, and 17" wheels.

Great feat! This thing gets the same mileage as the smallest non diesel vw's!

Nope there are a few that will get better. I bet the gas mileage is a lot closer to the 21mpg average than the 30mpg.

Well it looks like we are gonna have to wait for the final EPA numbers then, on the epa's site (http://www.fueleconomy.gov) all the gas vw's either get 22city/29hwy for the automatics or 21city/31hwy for the manuals. Say what you will about how accurate they are to real life driving conditions, but realize that the tests they do are uniform among all vehicles tested, and thus serve more as an equal benchmark.

"...the list of standard equipment is longer including more airbags, power lumbar support, and 17" wheels."

They forgot to mention that the turning circle is just inches short from that of a semi. OH YEAH, are upgraded plastics an OPTION? I like to know that my car isn't made from reprocessed Tupperware.

I can't speak directly for the Equinox, but I do know that a Yukon has a much tighter turning radius then a Mazda 6... something about being able to turn the wheels to a larger angle since it's bigger.

Built by the UAW.

I'll pass.

Whether you like them or not I hope GM has a winner here.

is the V-6 the same Chinese one that's in the Trail-Blazer?

No that was the 3.4 OHV V6. The Trailblazer used a 4.2DOHC I6.

General Motors' 3.6L direct injection V-6 VVT has been named to Ward's AutoWorld magazine's 2009 "Ten Best Engines" list for North America.

The engine is within GM's growing portfolio of direct injection engines and part of GM's overall strategy to equip vehicles with advanced propulsion technologies that improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. The application of direct injection also reduces cold-start hydrocarbon emissions by 25 percent.

GM also offers direct injection on its Ecotec 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder engine found in the 2009 Chevrolet HHR SS and Chevrolet Cobalt SS, Pontiac Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Red Line.

Ignorance is Bliss.

That comment on the Mazda 6 turning radius is true. My cousin has an 04 S and the turning radius is horrendous, he has to do backouts and repulls to get into most spots. My Matrix makes incredibly tight turns.

As for the Equinox, it's always been a good seller for Chevy and the redesign is pretty sharp. This and the cousin VUE make a nice combo, but the rushed out Pontiac Torrent was not very thrilling.
