NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: BMW X6M And X5M Pics Leak Early- STUD Or DUD?
The modern, sustainable legacy of BMW M GmbH began in 1985 when engineers placed the snarling, race-bred inline-6 engine from the M1 supercar into the production BMW 5 Series sedan, reworked the suspension and brakes, and created the first M5. Through this industry-first combination of attributes, the M5 redefined the capabilities of a sedan with levels of power, precision, balance, and linear control never before imaginable. Since then, finding new ways to expand the boundaries of what is possible with existing BMW models has been the singular purpose of the craftsmen at BMW M.  Now the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M are the first all-wheel-drive models to offer the remarkable performance, dynamic driving experience, athletic design, and premium quality of a BMW M product.

Official BMW X6M X5M Full Press Release

Both models are powered by a newly-developed 4.4-liter V8 M engine delivering 555 hp at 6,000 rpm and 500 lb-ft of torque from 1500 to 5,650 rpm. This new M engine is the world’s first with a pulse-tuned exhaust manifold encompassing both rows of cylinders combined with high-performance twin-scroll twin turbo technology.

For the X5 M and X6 M, engineers at BMW M pushed the capabilities of BMW’s intelligent xDrive all-wheel-drive system and the Dynamic Performance Control system to manage the power and performance potential of these two new vehicles. The special M suspension includes Adaptive Drive and newly-developed Servotronic power steering. These features combine to push the limits of what was previously possible with a sports-oriented vehicle, and guarantee driving behavior characteristic of a BMW M product: incredible stability and precisely controlled steering qualities abound throughout the performance envelope.

I am really not liking the lower front bumpers -- those air ducts are cartoonishly huge. All you see from the front is exposed radiator. Here's hoping BMW decides to use black radiators on the production models so they're less visible...

This thing looks fantastic! And, with 555 hp, are you kidding me! I like the large, functional intakes. It looks incredibly aggressive. I can't wait to drive it. The X6 50i is so great already, it is hard to imagine how much fun this one will be.

I don't doubt they'll drive ridiculously with that much power coupled with the already incredible X6 chassis dynamics. That front bumper just looks very "aftermarket tuner bodykit-ish" to me. Not as classy as I'd have hoped for considering the class they'll be competing in. Maybe in a different color...

I agree, the front bumper is iffy, but the rest of the package is phenomenal. Eliminating the two tone is an improvement as well. Can';t wait to see it in black.

The front bumper looks really odd. It looks as though the hood is open or something on the front is broken. Maybe it'll look better than this in real life but these pictures are horrendous. People complained the look of the x6 and I thought it look all right, but journalist will take this to a whole new level.

BMW is rating these cars 0-60 in 4.5s. That means real world tests are likely to be in the 4.1s range. Can you imagine what that engine is going to do in the next M5, which will weigh about 1000lb less? Yikes.

555 HP from a 4.4 litre V8 is impressive, and this thing might be faster than the E60 M5/E62 M6.
One can only imagine what the F10 M5 and F12 M6 will be capable of.
STUD indeed, and the engine specs are quite impressive.
I think M is going after Porsche.

Why the **** does anyone need a bloody SUV with 555hp?! This POS probably gets like 0.9 MPG in city driving. I KNOW this thing is gonna have a six-figure price tag. Ugh, Bimmer needs to stop making cars people will never have a need for.

no one "needs" Cayenne Turbos and Turbo S's or Mercedes ML63's either, yet they build them and sell them. Frankly I'm amazed BMW let them go this long unchalleneged.

it doesn't weight two tons -- a regular 5-Series sedan weighs over two tons, the X6 weighs another 1000lbs over that. If BMW is saying 4.5s 0-60 in a 5200lb X6 M (which means it'll probably be 4.1 seconds real world), I am almost scared to think what an M5/M6 will run.

The front bumper looks the way it does because it has too: it needs to channel air under the car for stability, feed masses of cooling air for brakes that will be heavily stressed and cool a twin turbo V8 engine. Not really a fan of the X6 but bravo to BMW for this, an amazing vehicle!

A real UNpractical and NON-utilitarian SUV. Suppose BMW doesn't call it a "SUV" ...yeah OK. Anyway, It really is pointless exercise to make something like this. If anyone really needs a fast moving SUV with LOTS of sport, go with the FX50. It will be, I'm guessing, probably like $35K less than this X6M. X6M numbers won't be 30 percent better than the FX50. And the FX50 does have some utility at least! I don't own an Infiniti either...

I dont like it, never did, never will. If i want an SUV i'd buy a Tahoe, if i want an SUV with luxury, i'd buy a Cadillac. Any real BMW enthusiast would consider any of the M "cars" before considering this misfit. I'd probably only consider this for my future wife and kids. But i'd probably still go with the Cadillac.

WOW, and to think that you will be able to lease those for $800 a month. Until BMW runs out of money. Those things are atrocious, useless and ill timed. I love it, BMW keeps digging itself in a deeper hole every month.
At the same time, I am sad, because I used to respect BMW while growing up in Europe. But they are becoming a joke, it's all about the marketing hype and the beans counters. There is no value in the product anymore, it is poorly put together, you can clearly see where they cut corners and try to save pennies.
Yeah, big engines and great driving dynamics, whoopee!!! Who cares anymore? How about overall value?
BMW sucks.

your comment made me laugh. I am not bitter at all, and comparing, driving and analyzing luxury cars is pretty much part of what I do for a living. Do not get fooled by my handle, I think most of you here claiming their "love" for BMW have barely any experience with those vehicles. You probably did not drive or you do not own any BMW's. You are the ones, most of you, disconnected from reality. You base your opinions on know Marketing gimmicks, legends, stories, "oh my dad has a bimmer and he loves it, it is the greatest car in the world".
If you have your BMW, it is an older model, when they still had value and were built properly, or like some guy in another post, you leased your M3 convertible for $760 a month, so you love the car because of its "cheap" payment.
News Flash for your fanbois; BMW is in trouble, they are hemorrhaging money on the US market, spending millions in incentives and even more millions to compensate their fake residual values. They already cut down production for the US by 45K units and are looking at more cuts.
They asked their suppliers to cut costs by 10 to 12%, how do you think that's going to translate on your BMW?
There is more to a car than a fancy badge, a great engine and a renown name. But it will too complicated to explain to you kids, especially without pictures.

To bad this new 4.4 V8, makes all of Audi's turbo engines look like a joke.

RS6- 5.0 twin turbo V10, 580hp@6250 = 116hp per liter, 480 lb-ft @1500rpm = 96 per liter.

X5m- 4.4 twin turbo V8 , 555hp@6000rpm = 126hp per liter, 500 lb-ft@1500rpm = 114 per liter

^ hahaha XD
That's why BMW produce rightfully, 'THE' Best engines in the world. There are plenty of people who rightfully acknowledge this. The 3.2L S54B32 I6, 3.0L N54B30 I6 and the 5.0L S85B50 V10 are just some of the most reputable engines in the world. Naturally Aspirated or Force Induced, BMW still make the best engines, hence my examples of both cases.

As to 1evlaudi, what car company isn't in trouble? A lot of companies/indusrties are feeling the global economic crisis, no company is immune to it. They might dreadfully feel it and express it as much as other, but there is no doubt any company can go through a day without a single bit of worry or stress.

1evlaudi, THANKS FOR PROVING MY POINT! You ARE bitter and disconnected from reality. You just INVENTED a fantasy version of me and then knocked it down! The perfect example of the "Straw Man" argument. You clearly ARE disconnected from reality and you don't know me so you can shut your little pathetic hole. And, your $800 per month comment further proves your delusional state.
