BMW 7 Series Ranked Most Tech-Advanced

BMW 7 Series Ranked Most Tech-Advanced
BMW’s 7 Series has been named the world’s most technologically advanced new vehicle in 2009 according to iSuppli Corp.’s Technology Availability Scorecard.

"For the fourth consecutive year, BMW has taken the leading OEM position in iSuppli’s Technology Availability Index," said Phil Magney, vice president, automotive research, for iSuppli. "The updated version of the BMW 7 Series includes 30 of the 35 total features defined in iSuppli’s Technology Ranking—the highest score ever recorded for an individual model in the four years this ranking has been conducted."

The 7 Series is a technological cornucopia, with a new 80Gbyte Hard Disk Drive (HDD) multimedia navigation system, an updated iDrive interface, a second-generation night vision system, a traffic sign recognition system and blind-spot detection. The 7 Series also offers a variety of built-in wireless features including an industry-first Internet browser, premium traffic, High Definition (HD) and Satellite Radio, Bluetooth, and a Harman Kardon Logic 7 surround sound system.

BMW also took the No.-2 spot on the model ranking, with its 5 Series coming in close behind the 7 Series with a score of 28. The BMW 6 Series received a score of 27. The BMW X5, Lexus LS—the overall leader in 2006—and the Hyundai Genesis earned 25 points, while the BMW 3 Series, X6, and Toyota Crown received a score of 24.

Collectively, BMW has a larger number of technology features deployed across more of its models than any other OEM, thus putting it in the top position for the fourth straight year.

BMW has won the top spot for FOUR YEARS IN A ROW! How can that be when so many brilliant people here on Autospies bag on BMW every day?? I can't imagine that these geniuses are actually ignorant and foolish. Anyway, congratulations to BMW for winning 6 out of the top 10 spots, including the top three spots.

As I've made the statement before on other threads, why don't anyone question the carbon footprint these vehicles leave compared to other manufactures? Why doesn't anyone question it?

I find it funny that there are no Benzes on that list. :)

Congratulation BMW nice finish. Personally I was expecting the LS460 to come in second and was expecting the S-class to place on the list somewhere. Oh well cars change fast, what was new 2 years ago is old news now I suppose. Hyundai made a nice showing too, they are definitely on a roll

This study doesn't really make sense, IMO, when they itemize the advancements on a model to model basis because a lot of these advancements get carried across the range, and some manufacturers make advancements more available at a more affordable cost than others.

It should be based on a broader level, between manufacturers; models can be discontinued at anytime.

I agree, they should twist the rules around so that my favorite car gets on the list.

What is Tech-Advanced about a Hyundai?

They make thee most ugly cars next to Kia and Suzuki.

I dont trust this list. Mercedes is known for over engineering the S class. It should have made that list.

This list is stupid. I do believe the new 7 series is the most advanced to date. The rest of the list is way off. Wheres the S Class.

204E60, your comments seem to sense if you refuse to look at reality. The Seven is far and away the engaging high-end luxury car on the market, AND it won the top technology spot. Drive any BMW and you will see that they are involving and communicative, and loads of fun to drive. Every BMW conveys an 'eagerness' to attack curvy roads.

I fail to see the great technology in the 7 Series. A V-8 sedan? We have been making those for 50 years. This list is all stagnated technology and it is strange to see people all bent out of shape about one manufacturer versus another. They all make exactly the same thing! They offer different colours and they bend metal a little bit differently.

Tata's Nano is an advancement. A modern automobile with a Bosch engineered drivetrain and it costs only $2,500.

If this is the most technologically advanced machines that the west can muster then they will all be bankrupt in 5 years.

How is S-Class not on this list? It was beyond ahead of the curve when it was unveiled 3-4 years ago.

Well,...maybe it's because you can now get all of these great ideas in one car...instead of the 3 or 4 cars you mentioned.

but what kind of cruise control does the 7 have? Yes and its Active Cruise Control is considered to be the best in the industry (it can bring the car to a complete stop).

Does it have lane departure? Yes.

How about driver attention monitoring? No.
