AutoSpies.com Sunday Soul Search - Whose Cars Do YOU Think Have the MOST Soul?

AutoSpies.com Sunday Soul Search - Whose Cars Do YOU Think Have the MOST Soul?
It was at some point yesterday when looking at the pictures of the X5M and X6M that I thought to myself that these monster SUV's must possess the soul of the devil himself.  Who in their right mind needs in excess of 500 horsepower for anything, especially in an SUV that can catapult its occupants to 60 MPH in less than 5 seconds.

The soul of the devil, an interesting thought.  One could argue the BMW's or any other car for that matter are not capable of having a soul as they are not actually living objects, but the personality brought to the table by cars like these make the argument of soul a valid one.

Of course BMW's are not the only cars that have soul, most manufacturers make at least one car that possesses what we as enthusiasts would consider soul.  Kia has gone as far as to name their newest car the Soul.  I am not sure if naming a car the Soul gives it soul, time will sort that one out but we all hold certain cars or manufacturers close to heart given the spirit of cars produced.

This isn't a BMW vs. Lexus vs. ??? question, this is a far deeper discussion into defining a car or entire lineup that has that certain something, the undefinable quality that could be described as soul.

I have driven a lot of cars in my time, there is truly an inherent difference between a car meant solely for basic transportation versus a purpose built car meant to do something special.

The Jeep is a great example of soul, people don't buy Jeep's because of the technical innovation or ergonomic cabin layout.  Instead these utilitarian devices are bought for the soul they possess, the ability to ford a stream or crawl up a rocky hillside.

I'll grant you that Jeep probably isn't on the top of most of our lust lists, however it does well to demonstrate the presence of a soul.  Ferrari, Porsche and Lamborghini all have that persona of being alive with soul.  The soul is what makes us want a particular car, the "it" factor that you tell your friends about.

Lets do a little soul searching and check in to tell us what car manufacturer infuses the most soul across the entire lineup.

While you ponder your answers, be sure to check out our exciting 2009 New York Auto Show Gallery.  No one covers an auto show like Agent 001, and he is there to bring it all to life for you.

Once done checking out all the New York has to offer, be sure to check out our other exciting galleries, there are pictures of cars, and then there are AutoSpies.com Galleries.

Can't we just have a discussion on this website without someone screaming or mentioning anything about a stupid flame war right off the bat? Comments like that are becoming just as cliché, common, & annoying as the flame war itself!

I am speaking of the Wrangler, a car that I see as having an almost cult like following.

I've never understood the Wrangler following. Had one for a few years and hated it. For the price range, there are so many massively better cars out there. And most people barely take them offroad.

no joke at all.

see my comment below about the Honda 600 Coupe. for all the accusations about boring designs, Toyota has also built more than a few cars with soul. the 2000GT is the most striking example, albeit not so affordable and far too rare today.

all MR2 models were also full of soul. even the corolla/celica 1.8 motor that cranks out 180 HP was/is such a hearty powerplant full of soul, it is the engine of choice for Lotus.

The F40, last Ferrari designed by Enzo himself, is said to be one of the most visceral and exciting sports cars of all time. I'd pick that over the F50.

Tough choice.

There are Classic American Muscle. There are European Super Cars. Then there's Japanese sports cars. Where do I begin?

Zonda F, Murcielago LP460, Ferrari F430 Scuderia, Mercedes-McLaren SLR, 300SL Gullwing, Carrera GT, Corvette (Sting Ray & Z06/ZR1), Camaro SS, 60's Mustang's, and the list goes on.

"Automotive soul" is something so subjective and childish there shouldn't be a topic on it. Seriously, "soul" means different things to different people. I once owned a Toyota Landcruiser diesel in Panama. Slow as hell, but I really liked driving it. To me it was fun to drive. On the other hand, the V6 Mustang I testdrove about a month ago left me cold.

i FULLY agree!!!

to just experience "soul" you have to own and live with a car, not JUST fantasize about it after only experiencing it third or fourth hand from some scribe's BRIEF drive!

so a prerequisite for one's judging whether a car has soul or not, is that it should be affordable. AFTER that hurdle, how enjoyable the car is comes next. then, other factors.

from that perspective, i'd say most of the cars Honda has built, especially in the early years, have the MOST soul. at the least, the most soul for the money.

i once drove a Honda 600 coupe. THAT car certainly had soul. as well as heart! its little 600 cc twin would wring its little heart out to give you more than anyone ever had any right to expect, out of such a little engine! one just could not help grinning while cruising along at 75 - 80 mph on california freeways (when the limit was 65 and most people actually observed it)!

its cute and certainly stylish lines (unlike the 600 Sedan) also caught the eye of fellow motorists. and THEY would often grin too!

i'd even dare to say that car had/has MORE SOUL than many a faster car, which you could NEVER drive at 10, 9, or even 8/10ths except on a track.

you could drive that honda at 10/10ths just about all the time, and rarely have cops look askance at you. (unless you got really stupid of course.)

it is FAR MORE FUN driving a slow car fast, than having to suppress yourself keeping a fast car reined in! and that honda was not really slow either, comparatively speaking.

yes but while you just FANTASIZE, i fully ENJOY my rides.

i don't even OWN the very fastest machines that i can afford. but i do buy what i can fully enjoy (including 2 motorcycles and a truck as well as a daily driver car), leaving MORE money left over for the OTHER pleasures of life.

unlike many poseurs, i am NOT a one-dimensional motorhead, who has his whole ego (or most of it) invested in a car he can barely afford.

yes, even a PRIUS with the governor bypassed, was clocked at 137 mph!

i was fortunate enuff to experience FIRST HAND many of the real sports cars of the late 1950s and '60s. while few would doubt that those cars INDEED had soul, on a strictly mechanical and performance basis, many of today's mundane ECONOBOXES are better and faster! (they just happen to not have as funky styling, which IMHO is the primary if not SOLE basis on which many today attribute gives a car soul)

with its VVTi engine, my current 'econobox' is faster than any 4-banger sports car of the '50s or '60s.

even the famed ferrari california 250GT has only a mere 3.0 liter engine. today's toyota 3.5 v6 has as many cams and valves and makes MORE power. but of course, it won't snarl like the ferrari's v12! so it is NOT absolute power which gives a car soul.

and a true DRIVER with skill can have fun driving just about anything! more so if the vehicle can be driven with 'brio!'

i'd support your vote. those cars CAN be driven with brio. and make nice sounds and look good.
unfortunately, as daily drivers, they would not fare well, lacking japanese RELIABILITY which is now the standard of the world.

if not for the overt flashiness, many of today's "tuned imports" would actually be preferable! FAST, unbeatable in corners, and reliable enuff to enjoy as daily drivers.

which explains why the Miata has been such a smashing success! the soul of traditional brit sports cars. with modern japanese power and electronics! (were you aware of the trouble Mazda went to, to get just the right SOUND and tuning of the exhaust, to emulate the old sounds?)
