Audi RS5: Mighty Twin-Turbo V8 Coupe Sets To Dethrone BMW M3
Meet the performance coupe that’s got BMW’s M3 worried. These are the best shots yet of Audi’s upcoming RS5 flagship, which we’ve spied testing at high speed on the Nurburgring circuit in Germany.

Powered by a 450bhp 4.2-litre twin-turbo V8, it’s more powerful than the 414bhp 4.0-litre V8-engined M3 and boasts a Quattro four-wheel drive system too, available with a choice of both six-speed manual and seven-speed twin-clutch gearboxes.

Performance will be epic with 0-60mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155mph. The RS5 will be a match for the M3 in the corners too with stiffened and lowered suspension, a wider track and stickier rubber.

In addition to four-wheel drive, it will also boast Audi’s new active rear differential – as used by the latest S4 – which helps distribute torque to different wheels, aiding agility and traction. Expect to the see the new RS5 at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September, with UK sales starting before the end of the year. A price tag of £48,000 is mooted.

Twin Turbos = More Torque If the engine is anything similar to the previous RS6 4.2TT, it should have around 400lb-tq thats 100 more than the m3 plus the 36hp difference.

how do you know the weight? I am sure the RS4 will weigh less then the S4. Just like the old one did.

why is it going after the M3 I thought i was compared the BMW 6-series. shouldnt be after the M6. But it seems to me that every car manufacturer wants to challenge BMW these days. who wouldnt want to challenge the NUMBER 1 selling luxury car in the U.S...lmao....i just had to say that

A lot of that I think has to do with the Quattro System. As advanced as that is, I would think it is possible to reduce the weight. Next gen Audi's are to loose with overall. Won't help now though.

i thought the M3 was benchmarket by the old RS4. Who had the HP and the V8 first. The week Audi anounced the RS4 for 2007 BMW said. Wait we will have the same. It took BMW almost 2 years to do it though.

just like its taking audi 2-3 years to "respond" to the e92.

Gee, not like david969 is trying to trol a line to start a flame war with stupid comments about "clean" cars.

It's not like all automakers meet the same very stringent emissions standards set out by the EPA/CARB (in the USA).

Fuel economy has nothing to do with being "clean", CO2 isn't pollution.

Dear David969, I think Audi has surpassed Lexus in the interior quality long ago. Go check out Audis at the Q5 test drives http://www.audidrivingexperience.com/2009/?area=Q5

And what about the clean performance! (a) IS-F consumption 11.4 l/km + 283 g/100km CO2, (b) S5 consumption 9.7 l/100km + 224 g/km CO2.

i wonder if this bad boy will come to the US.

it will. Audi didn't bring the RS6 to the US to save room for the RS5 and RS4

Yes. The weight will be an issue that will be brought up in many reviews. When has an Audi RS ever been lighter than its BMW M competition? However the Quattro will most likely add to a better 0-60 and quarter mile. Should be a fantastic car regardless of anything.

I have to wonder about all these random claims about the weight of the "supposedly overweight" Audi RS4 compared the the M3.

When, despite a complex AWD system and a engine that is slightly larger (4.2L vs 4.0L), the BMW M3 is HEAVIER than the RS4.

E92 BMW M3 Sedan - 3648lbs (1655kg)

forget about 0-60 or 1/4 mile, even the c63amg beats the m3 at that, but is no match for the dynamic M handling, a simple 335i takes an S5 around the track, and that is without the M badge. Can Audi tighten handling and agility to match the M3 even with the extra pounds? I think so, proven with the old success of the RS4, but not matter what M3 will always have more character and soul.

the S5 competes with the 335.

OK class in in for the BMW fans

A4 2.0 vs 328
A4 3.2 discontinued 2009
S4 3.0T vs 335
RS4 ? vs m3

Seems the RS5 will be a pretty fast car on track, probably pretty similar(or even faster) to M3 due to the the larger enginee, stiffened and lowered suspension etc. but i remember many reviews have mentioned that M3 actually has very comfortable ride, even better than 335i. can the very hardcore RS5 out do M3 over all?
