Official: Vw Scirocco will not make it to the U.S.
It was recently announced that the brand new Volkswagen Scirocco, will not make it to the U.S. This was confirmed by Tom Wegehaupt, Volkswagen‘ of America’s public relations coordinator, so we are not speaking about a rumor. Anyway, there is a good news though, that the Golf GTI will make its U.S. debut so you can always switch to that vehicle (we know the Scirocco looks way better than the Golf but what can we do?).

Too bad... this economy has auto manufacturers making poor decisions left and right.

Yes-This is a poor decision. Obviously if you want a sport coupe now you cannot depend on VW. There was only one car in the lineup that I was interested in and that was the Scirocco.

You see what I don't get is they were going to bring it in as a limited edition with the R20 260HP engine. It essentially was going to replace the R32 as the premier sporting VW being that it was a 2 dr. The GTI is in a lower price bracket. The assumption was that they could price the Scirocco in the high 20's(say 28 grand for example). That would have put it some distance away from the GTI which is priced around 23 grand. The difference is justified with the 260 HP engine and the adaptive suspension system.Further according to some of the European car mags the cost to build the Scirocco is actually less then the Golf GTI. In fact in Europe the Scirocco is priced slightly lower then the GTI.So the the original explanation of the Scirocco being more expensive negating the chance to make any money on it in the USA is total B.S.I think the real reason for them not bringing it in is VWOA want to protect the sales of the GTI at all cost. Since it appears to be one of the top selling VW here they felt that the Scirocco would have jepordized the GTI.The mistake they made is that VWOA could have just offered a 4dr GTI and the 2dr Scirocco R20 as their halo car.The GTI is an accomplished car but it has a boring dowdy boxey Hatchback body. As a hatchback both the Mini Cooper and Volvo C30 are more attractive. Further if Ford brings in the RS with it's 305 HP,revo knuckle suspension VW will have missed a great sales opportunity.Saying this VW does have some other cars in it's lineup that are appealing. Right now the Passat CC is quite attractive but pricy and the Tiguan is also attractive but pricy. The Scirocco would have been the Halo car and said VW is also in the sports car business. It's really a shame as I no longer will consider VW on my shopping list.

I priced a well-equipped Scirocco @ VW's UK website. Doing the currency conversion, it'd cost more that $37,000 in the states. That's quite a difference between it and the GTI. Looks aren't everything.
