WSJ: German Luxury Car Manufacturers Post Smaller Declines

Although the financial crisis has reaked havoc on the German luxury car manufacturers over the last 6 months, conditions appear to be improving somewhat for BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

For the month of March, BMW Group's core BMW brand sold 104,417 vehicles globally, a decline of 17% compared to the same month last year. For the first quarter of 2009 the BMW brand posted a 21% global sales decline to 233,498 vehicles.

Daimler's Mercedes-Benz unit posted a similar 18% global sales decline for the month of March for a total of 98,500 vehicles. For the first quarter of 2009 the Mercedes-Benz brand saw a 25% sales decline compared to 2008 for a total of 216,000 vehicles.

BMW and Mercedes-Benz have seen the largest sales declines in part due to their much larger dependence on the ailing U.S. market.

Volkswagen's flagship luxury brand, Audi, saw its global sales decline 11% for the Month of March to a total of 90,400 units. Audi's first quarter global sales for 2009 declined 16% to 210,200. This continues the trend that sees Audi closing the gap between its larger rivals due to an increase in sales for 2008 combined with significantly smaller global monthly sales declines into 2009 when compared to BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Audi's smaller drop has been attributed to its much smaller reliance on the struggling U.S. market when compared to its competitors.

It should be noted that all 3 manufacturers have new or significantly re-designed models such as the revamped BMW 7-series, Mercedees-Benz E-class, and all new Audi Q5 that should help improve sales somewhat for the rest of the year.

that's because their cars are far superior to anything from Japan.

good numbers relative to competitors...most of whom are down globally by more than double that.

and 100,000+ bmw cars per month is very solid.

Look at Audi creeping up Mercedes neck ready for the takeover! A difference of less than 6,000 cars over 3 months!

Think about this for a second: Mercedes outsold Audi by 100,000 cars in 2008!

Awww. Look at the cute little German fanboys relishing in superiority, even out of bad news. Desperation is a good look on all of you.

Why is it important who is number 1?
The E class from Mercedes will raise sales so will the Q5 from Audi, but the 7 series i dont know, its a nice car but it is more expensive so problably only a small increase in sale.
But again who cares about BMW, Mercedes or Audi will sell most cars? cant se why it should be important. Other than for fanboys :)

BMW = I cant believe you drive that car but work in McDonalds,Thier giving away their cars for free, I was blown away by their deals.

Lets face it the only thing that Japan has for the Germans is lexus and everybody is tired of Lexus and their b.S. of how reliable they are.I have a 06 gs 430 and must say that I have had more problems (nothing major)with that car then I have had with my 97 540i for the 4 years I had it.No one is more dependable or more reliable then the other anymore now its just what car you like and which is cheaper to hook up.I for 1 am looking to go back to bmw and get the x5

Interesting, I must say. That's because all three brands are world wide recognized as superior to their competitors. Why is that? That's because all three of them offered super quality cars throughout their leggendary history and buyers know that. They haven't appeared over night with a product and claimed how great it is. Words don't speak for themselves, actions do!
