What Brand Makes The Most Unergonomic And Poorly Designed Interiors?

What Brand Makes The Most Unergonomic And Poorly Designed Interiors?
We're fortunate because we get to drive a lot of different vehicles during the course of the year and most of them are pretty decent rides.

But every once in a while we get in a car or a truck and wonder what on earth the designers were thinking when they designed it and engineered the ergonomics.

Today's question for our audience is... What brand makes the most unergonomic and poorly designed interiors?

Tell us specific models you've owed or driven as well that are just plain nightmares inside.

And be sure to tell us why and what were the specific things that drove you crazy inside.

And WHO will be able to guess what interior is pictured and have the bragging rights that they were first?

Also, we would like to wish our Christian and Jewish readers a holy and Happy Easter/Passover!

I want to say that's a mid 90s Pontiac Grand Am....it definitely has GM written all over it. Am I right?

It took me about 10 seconds to come up with that because my family owned one. Now having researched it, I'm almost positive it's a Pontiac Grand Am.

Any pre XF Jag and the last Toyota Prius.

The ergonomics on both weren't making it for me.

We are the polar opposite when it comes to this car. Love the tech in the new XF! First, the surface is clean and void of gimmicks. Lots of space and panels are thin, giving a feel of space. I thought the Jaguar Drive Selector would be a joke, but now I sure most premier companies are tearing Jags apart to see how easy it is to use. Interior ambient lighting is awesome, and quality is great. The wood is not glossy cheap like a lot of luxury interiors. i would say this model is getting close to the quality of Audi (by the way, I don't see Audi on this list).

Ford Focus. Completely unintuitive, ugly, uncomfortable, cheap-plastic feeling.

At the polar opposite level, I got to sit in a Tesla model S today. While unfinished, the quality of the leather and finish were fantastic and the center console was insane. It was like having a 17inch iPhone that controls everything in the car... menus and controls were very intuitive. The steering wheel was one of the best I've ever felt.

Heck NO! The last 3-4 years Honda Civic, fugly! Plus when I drive one if I stretch the seat out to get enough footroom then my arms are completely straight and I have to lean forward to grip the wheel. Plus, any Scion what in the hell is Toyota thinking? Butt Ugly!

My niece's Honda interior is far nicer and higher quality. Toyota seems to be slipping. I'll stick with my American made car, the interior is far better.

I rented an 08 Pontiac Grand Prix the other day and was totally amazed at the poor design and quality of the interior. None of the textures matched (dash to glove box door to A-pillar covers...). It was impressively awful.

Oh, and it squeaked and rattled like a covered wagon. It is no wonder they are going down.

The Lexus RX. My old lady has one. Maybe I'm just too tall for the car, but the front seats are too small, they lack enough cushion length to provide any useful thigh support, they don't slide back far enough, they don't tilt down enough, it is impossible for me to find a comfortable driving position in that vehicle. It also lacks an ipod connection - it's an '09. Lame.

A4ORCEA4ORCE - 4/13/2009 12:36:49 PM

Least Ergonomic: 90s Mercedes and BMW. For example, if you look at a 95 S class, there's a large cluster of small buttons on the center console, small digital readouts, and personally, I found seat adjustments attached to the seats next to your thigh was more intuitive than the adjustment knobs attached to the door. Each function would require you to take your eyes off the road (if even for a split second), even for the power windows, with the way they were placed on the center console (brief check to make sure front windows go down instead of rear). Kind of ironic considering the German's typical reputation of their priorities on driving focus.

Worst Design: 90s GM or Ford. The plastics look like they belong on children's toys and not on a car you may end up owning for the better part of a decade. I wouldn't be surprised if they were Mattel approved to be safe for children under the age of 3. I mean, who'd be able to swallow those buttons right? And remember when Ford tried to go modern with the jelly bean Taurus? IMHO, the 80s produced the worst cars, but even their interiors had some flare to them.

Conversely, I find the Mercedes/BMW designs to be quite exquisite (except the C class) and give GM/Ford decent marks for ergonomics (for all their ugliness, every function was simple and intuitive), even though the Japanese still had the edge in that department, again, IMHO.

do you mean the original Taurus from 1985? that 'jellybean' Taurus was a revolution in design - it was the first car to abandon 'boxy' design and every car after it followed it in that regard. At the time of its release, the original Taurus was critically aclaimed and it became one of the best selling cars of all time... I hate Fords, but I give props where props are due.

I was referring to the 96 model that had the oval center console. The previous 2 generations were great for the time. Went downhill from there, but should be back up with their 2010 model.

Was the first gen a "jelly bean" too? That third gen will be more of a jelly bean than any car ever will be.

Its not that its that bad or anything it just makes you sleepy looking at it. You would have expected more thought into the interior design by looking at the car from the outside. Its so boring in the inside that sometimes I want to get out of it just as quick as I get in it.

There are a number of really ugly interiors. And though they are not the ugliest, by far, I believe that BMW is worth noting as "Yech" because we know they can do a lot better. The once-purposeful design has yielded to fashion and gadgets. iDrive for a simpler *looking* dash, than a better-working one. Expensive and exotic materials that look cheap.

Please, BMW, return to making wonderful and attractive cars whose greatest sin was being a tad conservatively styled.

American trucks are the most unergonomic and poorly desigend interiors! They haven´t changed since...since the beginning. Compared to european trucks who leads the ergonomic interior, ahed over the cars realy. Because its a working area and it must be good designed to prevent human bad health.
