There is no surprise here at all. This seemed to me at the time a knee jerk reaction to Honda's Ridgeline. Dodge is guilty of the same thing. Both Dodge and Toyota later saw how the press fawned over the Honda but not many folks were coughing up the bucks for it. I dont know if it meet Honda's sales targets or not (I am sure they would say yes) but I do see a fair amount on the road. It would seem in hindsight that Honda invented a segment that few people wanted but was very innovative at the time.

Nice design but put the body on a V6 Tacoma 4X4 with a 6 speed tranny (just to be green) and We'll sell the hell out of them.
