Toyota expecting over 40,000 pre-orders for the 2010 Prius
It was reported yesterday by two local Japanese papers, Chunichi and Nikkei, that the Japanese car giant Toyota is looking to outsell the 2010 Honda Insight Hybrid through its 2010 Toyota Prius when it becomes available for sale in the middle of May this year.

So far, there are about 20,000 orders of the 2010 Toyota Prius according to the news publications. This number is expected to double when the Prius actually hits the market said one unnamed official from Toyota. As was noted many times before, Toyota met the Insight threat by selling a stripped down version of its 2009 Prius at the same price of the Insight and that it will lower the price tag for its 2010 model in contrast to the 2009 model. The latest Prius is estimated to cost around 2.05 million Yen ($20,750), considerably cheaper than the preceding model’s 2.33 million Yen ($23,448).

Toyota expects these orders in Japan, where the new Prius will be released first. The E-Class orders are probably for all of Europe, since that is the region of the world that will see its release first.

20000 preorders of a new model is not that many.

The new E-class starts at $51,000. How is the $20,000 Prius $10,000 less? Don't you mean $30,000 less than the new E-class?

He is talking about the number of pre-orders the Prius has 40K (really 20K if you read the text)and the new E-Class has 50K pre-orders.

"According to the Nikkei newspaper in Japan, Toyota is expecting to take 40,000 preorders in Japan for its new 2010 Prius hybrid ahead of its official debut in May."

It looks like they expect 40k preorders just IN JAPAN.

Out of all the catastrophes that has happened to this planet, why is it that so many people think that our influence of the environment is so much greater then all of them? I swear, all green activists must have been the kids who growing up blamed themselves for their parents divorce.

Well hold the phone, just for a second....

Mandating recycling (10 cent deposits like in michigan)--Great thing... so we don't hear a fuss about it.

Massive other recycling efforts to limit plastics & other valuable materials from getting into the environment.... great thing.... so we dont hear much about it.

the "sky is falling!! We have to stop driving fun cars at once!!, too much CO2 from all those people who drive fun cars / SUVs!!" ---Absolute liberal nonsense that no one really cares about, so what do they do? Since people really don't care about oil dependency and the dangers of it, since people don't care about some whiny eco-whackjob who just endlessly hates SUVs/SportsCars, they decry that CO2 is a pollutant! Then, since it is absolutely unreasonable to expect normal people to jump up in the air and comply with insane anti-auto ideas, these jerkass liberals will pass legislation to force everyone to follow their lead.

Typical "I drive a Prius and you don't and it makes me mad... so I'm going to brainwash everyone with CO2 nonsense and pass legislation that forces everyone to drive a prius."

Bulls**t with a capital "B".

** Dont get me wrong, the idea of renewables is awesome as is the idea of reducing/eliminating all harmful pollution.... its just this whimsidaisical "cars are the reason for global warming" nonsense is getting way out of hand....**

Hey, it's all about being posch and hip right? Why the hell else would women spend ghastly amounts of money on shoes/clothes? All about the image.......

It's like my summer car... beautiful, classy, and a massive eye catcher. Gets tons of attention... even though its old, not too fast (thank CARB from the 1980's), and requires lots of time/effort. Logically, it is a dumb car to drive just to get around... but the image it projects.... priceless.

my summer "car" is also beautiful, classy, a massive eye catcher, AND it gets 40 - 50 mpg.

and it is NOT slow, except in comparison to other japanese 4-cylinder bikes. but it's fast enuff 95% of the time, and faster than harleys with twice the engine 100% of the time. (and MUCH more stylish and rare)

it happens to be a 1995 honda magna v4.

you are an idiot. SOME japanese may splurge occasionally on Kobe beef. that doesn't mean they ALL do. in fact, japanese as a whole are more thrifty than scots.

if NOT for the collective savings of japanese and chinese peoples, they'd be NO ONE to finance the massive overspending of americans.

i suspect they're mostly JEALOUS of people they look down on as non-enthusiasts, who make SMARTER purchases and save a lot more money.

they're proud of their "sophisticated" automotive choice, but resent what it costs to buy and operate, yet they cannot fully exploit its "automotive virtues" 95% of the time, due to traffic constraints and the SIMPLE REALITIES of modern life.

When I see one of these new Priuses on the road, I am going to steer clear immediately!! The buyer of this thing must be blind... otherwise they wouldn't have bought it!!

Cool tech though.... too bad it's not very attractive. I would like to see Toyota put a small 4-cyl, DI engine with a well calibrated 6spd tranny in the Prius.... and price it accordingly. Then people would see what a sales marketing pitch the whole prius thing is.

"Funny, you say they have a sence of responsibility. The ones I see don't. They get in the left hand lane..."

then your "sence" of vision is obviously seriously impaired. i don't see priuses blocking left lanes any more than other models. in fact, most priuses in my city are driving as fast OR FASTER than most traffic.

your defective "sence" also seems to cause you to make unwarranted generalizations.

among the prius owners i know personally (10 and counting, plus 1 highlander hybrid owner), it is hard to generalize and say they ALL have something in common. EXCEPT a much higher level of education than average, appreciation of toyota quality and reliability, AND higher than average senses of responsibility.

the latest convert, traded her new beetle in on a prius. not is she smart (a college prof), but one of the sexiest 50-somethings that i know! and she is NOT a slow driver!

the sexiest 40-something i know, is also a former VW driver. she WAS a slow driver. and WAS prone to going slow in the left lane.
