Will the MiTo Be Alfa Romeo's Return Ticket to the USA?

Will the MiTo Be Alfa Romeo's Return Ticket to the USA?
It's crunch time for Fiat in its courting of Chrysler. The question remains, will it get Chrysler to the altar in time to meet the Auto Task Force's end-of-month deadline?

If it does, what will be the first Fiat Group car will arrive at Chrysler's small-car-strapped dealerships first. Many of the bets are on the Fiat 500 which has been a runaway success in Europe. But knowing that there's been an ongoing attempt for years to return Alfa Romeo to these shores, at Automotive Traveler we are placing our bets on the quirky Alfa Romeo MiTo, a B-segment subcompact that takes the styling cues of the 8C supercar and applies them to a car that any of us can afford.

For the first US-published road test of the MiTo, take a look at what our UK correspondent Leigh Nethercot has to say on automotivetraveler.com. <link automotivetraveler.com text to http://automotivetraveler.com/jump/490>

(I spoke with Donald on the phone -- we shared the XC60 on the Volvo press program -- before he left for Shanghai and he said that the posting editors would keep an eye out for my submissions.)

The U.S. just isn't into the subcompact cars; they're more of a niche market right now. Alfa would need to bring a little more than just the MiTo.

The US has embraced the Mini, and the 1 series BMW, and I think the Audi A3 is doing sort of ok, in these dismal times.

When gas hits $4.00 again, and it will, people will buy small cars, especially if they are attractive and fun, and not penalty boxes like Cavaliers, Yaris, and Escorts.
