Porsche 928 successor will be based on the Panamera
Speaking to the press at the 2009 Shanghai Motor Show, Porsche’s design chief Michael Maur said that he his working on a successor to the 911 that will be much more than a simple update to the new-generation 911 and may create a fifth variant in Porsche’s lineup.

Sources say that the model could be a new 928, a model that Porsche dropped in 1995. The new model will use the Panamera chassis and will have a 3-door...

I miss the 944 and 928. Those were days when there was more variation in the Porsche line-up. As it stands right now almost everything is a 911 variant. I'm happy to see them resurrect a classic nameplate like the 928, as long as it's not just another 911 mutation.

I also think that a 2dr Panamera based coupe will look a lot more balanced. It should be a very nice car. Further the 911 has become a lot more main stream. It now has a watercooled engine. It is a lot quieter then the aircooled versions. It has PDK now. It has available AWD.It has a lot of luxury accutrements that previous versions did not have. Because of this having an eventual front engined car that is built along side and cost similar money would be a natural replacement for the 911.I guess what I'm saying is the 2 cars would be a lot more a like then the 928 and old aircooled 911 were.Yes I know the 911 is rear engined but the 997 version is has a lot more benign handling characteristics along with being more luxurious and quieter. Therefore the question comes up what does a modern 911 offer that modern 928 cannot. To me the answer is not much.By moving 911 to a front engine with a V8 allows room for the mid engine cars with the flat six to thrive and prosper. Essentially Porsche would become more like Ferrari in offering 2 front engined sporting vehicles along with a cheaper but more racy mid engine offerings. In addition the 911 is under more and more pressure because it does not offer a V8 and is not mid engined for the most balanced handling.A front engined car also offers more predictable handling characteristics then the rear engined concept.

So will it basically be like a Panamera coupe then? Funny, the 928 always reminds of the movie Risky Business.

Can't wait so see this. I would love to see the new 928 crush a Vantage or Maserati GT.
