Bruised Reputation? Hyundai Recalls Almost 1 Million Cars In 4 Separate Campaigns

Bruised Reputation? Hyundai Recalls Almost 1 Million Cars In 4 Separate Campaigns
Hyundai is working with the NHTSA to recall almost one million vehicles from 1999 through 2008 due to various suspension components that could fail. The general issue is that when these parts are exposed to road salt over several years, they could erode to the point of failure. Another part of the recall involves stop lamp switches that malfunction.

Though the corrosion issue is somewhat typical on non-premium vehicles in the snow belt areas of the country, Hyundai feels this is a major safety issue and is spending the resources to ensure that its customers are safe.

The list of vehicles and summary of issues is below.

2001-2003 Hyundai Santa Fe-The rear trailing arms could corrode internally, leading to deformation and the loss of structural rigidity of the arms, which could lead to a crash if the arms separates while driving.

1999-2004 Hyundai Sonata; 2001-2004 Hyundai XG300/XG350-The front sub-frame steel could corrode internally, which may lead to the forward mounting of the lower control arm to detach from the sub-frame. This may lead to a crash because the driver loses power to the wheels and the wheel may make contact with the fender or wheel well.

2001-2003 Hyundai Elantra; 2003 Hyundai Tiburon-Road salt can corrode and thin the steel in the front lower control arm. A perforated front lower control arm may fracture between its ball joint attachment and the front and rear pivot attachments to the chassis. This may result in reduced control of the direction of the front wheel or wheels.

Several newer Hyundai's are part of the stop lamp switch recall, including:

2006-2007 Hyundai Accent, Entourage, and Sonata; 2007 Hyundai Azera, Elantra, and Santa Fe; 2005-2007 Hyundai Tucson; 2007-2008 Hyundai Veracruz

The recall for all of the above vehicles is a result of malfunctioning stop lamp switches which may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, or remain lit when the pedal is released. It may also prevent the vehicle from being able to be shifted from Park, the Electronic Stability Control system to malfunction, and the cruise control may not deactivate when the brake pedal is depressed. These may all lead to a crash.

If your vehicle is mentioned above, get it to your nearest Hyundai dealership for free repairs ASAP. You may also call Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 for assistance.

Unfortunately this is what happens when you make the strides that they have over the past year as far as sales. Toyota is guilty of the same thing. When you try to grow your company and have the ambition that these two have its got to happen. As much as I dislike Honda I hate to say it but this has happened to them far less frequently due to them just letting the market pick them and not just increasing their output just because. I am more of a Ford guy and I really wish Ford had followed Honda's model alittle closer. Instead of if we build it they will come attitude.

Badgewhore, Honda had similar failures with their early Civics to the early Hyundai Excels.

So, yes, Toyota (and in turn, Lexus) got it right from day one, but no one else has been so lucky.

Pretty much every mass market automaker ever has had a recall in one fashion or another. Toyota isn't perfect, GM isn't perfect, Honda isn't perfect, Ford isn't perfect, Volkswagen isn't perfect, and Hyundai isn't perfect. Good for Hyundai for acknowledging and addressing the problems head-on.

BMW perfect? Probably, you haven't heard about the HPFP problem.
The issue is lot more serious than the suspension or brake light issue mentioned above. BMW didn't issue a recall, yet. The reason is they don't know how to fix it, while it's been there for more than two years.

Yeah, how big of deal is the suspension collapsing anyway? So your suspension collapses, what is the worst that could happen? So you might spin off the road and hit a pole or roll over maybe, BFD. So much better than a fuel pump issue.

What reputation? There isn't anything to bruise. To bruise reputation you have to have a reputation first.

Of course it's not a perfect world...far from it. Cars, in general, have become more and more complex so any recall by any manufactuer should come as no surprise. But, Hyundai really has a long, long way to go to be put in the same category as Toyota/Lexus.

Give them a break. They are working hard and still capturing market share slowly but surely.

If the Genesis name plate is the name for the new brand then expect good things to happen. The Equus looks good and the Genesis sedan is as good proposition as the current flagship of the range. I hope they break off as separate brands to ensure Hyundai's goals of making a luxury division will happen.

Your comment is as impotent as your username.

Hyundai is on the way up. ALL manufacturers have recalls. It's how they fix the problem and learn from it that matters.

There is nothing racial about being a fanboy. I think you are mixing up racism with just general stereotyping. The problem most people do have with fanboy's is that they tend to have a nasty habit of selective hearing. Selective hearing being that they hear what they want to hear.

You must be really bothered by this article. In this post I don't know what you trying to say other then that Korean's aspire to make luxury cars... which doesn't tie into anything?

im sorry the genesis doesnt have a lexus emblem on it 0to60,

other people like cars with power, style, and value at a lower cost rather than paying 60 grand for the nameplate.

Are you implying that I am a Lexus fan??? Um your way off there buddy. How bout u research some of my previous comments then respond to my post. I may defend Lexus at times but I do it just to piss the BMW fans off on this site. I respect Lexus however would never drive one. My mom loves hers however. I prefer performance over luxury. Im more of a Infiniti/bmw guy.

i am not implying that your a lexus fan. Im just stating that if this car had the Lexus "L" on the hood, no one would be bashing it.

Im glad your more of an Infiniti fan, i love Infiniti. The essence concept is beautiful.

And Anthony, not to step on your heels or anything, but the Avalon has been around for years, so its going to have some value to its name, the Genesis however has only been out for 6 months. Like you said only time will tell(if the genesis offers more value than the Avalon, and IMO, it does).

Really,

Is Hyundai worth arguing over? I like the Genesis. Granted, I think the Toyota Avalon offers even more value than the over-hyped Genesis, but I still like it very much. There did not appear to be any Genesis cars in the recall, so maybe Hyundai really is turning things around. Time (and sales) will only tell.

HyundaiSmoke, so my guess is that Hyundai has more plants in america than anywhere else including Korea?

They Have 3 or 4 plants in america,
Cali, Alabama, Pennsylvania, and i believe they have one in Michigan as well.

I like Hyundai much more than Toyota and I would buy Korean long before Japanese. so the only recalls that have any relevance are Japanese.Mind you they are all trash compared to ford and GM.

Sad that so many of them seem to be ignorant a-holes.

Autospies already had plenty of those.

Meh I don't see how this would hurt their reputation; if you have a 2001 car of any type and live in a snow area, and come in to complain about the corrosion they're going to tell you to pound sand. My old 01 Accord came from a snowy area and the metals looked pretty horrible, I even had a rear brake caliper seize and it had to be replaced.

New parts for old out of warranty cars for free.. who's gonna complain?
