Has The Back Been Broken? UAW Agrees To No More Strikes!

The United Auto Workers Union’s tentative contract with Chrysler LLC presented to union members Tuesday fundamentally changes labor relations by curbing the UAW’s right to strike for the next several years.

The contract was being presented to the more than 28,000 UAW members ahead of the ratification vote today.

“It’s very difficult,” said one union leader, who asked not to be identified.

“I really don’t think we had much choice but to go along,” Harley Shaiken, a labor expert from the University of California-Berkeley, said the “no-strike” provision represents a major change in Detroit’s often contentious labor relations. “That’s a fundamental change,” Shaiken said. “But it’s being done in the context that it will take anywhere from three to five years for this company to recover,” he said.

Well if they agree....the Japanese, Germans, Asian and British will American options every time that they want a new car....It looks ok to mee....If they reject that agreement, we will see the fall of the amercan car industry and rise of the Chinese car Industry.....

It is going to be hard for the UAW to continue to screw GM and Chrysler when they have such big ownership stakes in them.

That does make an interesting scenario.

How about they file Chapter 11 and eliminate the union contracts entirely.

Chrysler is going to file Chapter 11 tomm to get those last creditors off their back. Then it will merge with Fiat. Fiat will own 20%,the UAW will own 55% and the US Government for now will own 35%.Once certain milestones have been achieved with Fiat(EG-using a Fiat engine in a Chrysler car, building Fiats at Chrysler plants etc.,Fiat will gardually increase it's stake to 35% and possibly more.It sounds like this is a doable situation but until it's inked on paper I would not hold your breath. It looks like there is a chance this will happen. Frankly I think it's great for Chrysler and great for US manufactoring. The government is going to own a lot more of GM,however.Once this is signed I can feel confident that Alfa Romeo is finally coming back to the USA. I can't wait!

uh, it was hedge fund debt holders that brought Chrysler to bankrupcy, not the "unreasonable" UAW.

Sorry that facts got in the way of your hate fest.

VW has had union members on its' board for years, and VW/Audi is partially state owned. I've never seen any criticism of that on this delusional board.
