BMW Extends Sales Lead Over Lexus After Falling 31.3% In April - Mini Sales Drop 22.4%

The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported April sales of 19,362 vehicles, a decrease of 38.4 percent from the 31,448 vehicles sold in the same month of 2008. The BMW Group also reported a year-to-date sales volume of 70,606 vehicles, down 29.4 percent, compared to 99,977 vehicles sold in the same period a year ago. Despite the negative development in April, both BMW and MINI continue to track better than their market segments year-to-date.

BMW Brand Sales

Sales of BMW brand vehicles decreased 41.3 percent in April for a total of 15,705 vehicles compared to 26,735 vehicles reported in the same month a year ago. Year-to-date, BMW brand sales were down 31.3 percent, to 58,436 vehicles compared to 85,100 vehicles sold in the same period of 2008.

"Industry wide, April felt more like a dust bowl than a spring garden for new car sales but at least we are seeing improvements compared to the dark beginning of the year," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America LLC. "For us, strong BMW Certified Pre-Owned business continues to bring new and younger customers into the family while we manage the new vehicle sales as well as we can until this garden begins to grow again - hopefully by the end of the year."

BMW Certified Pre-Owned (CPO)

Sales of BMW's Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are up 1.3 percent, to 9,354 CPO vehicles versus 9,237 vehicles reported last April 2008. Year-to-date, CPO sales are up 10.3 percent, to 38,000 over the 34,461 reported in the same period of 2008. For BMW, the healthy development of the used car business adds another source of revenue to dealer operations and helps offset the decline in new car sales.

MINI Brand Sales

MINI USA reported sales of 3,657 automobiles, down 22.4 percent from the 4,713 cars sold in April 2008. Year-to-date, MINI USA also reported sales of 12,170 automobiles, a decrease of 18.2 percent, compared to the 14,877 cars reported in April 2008.

"We've seen sales stabilizing month-to-month in our segment in April but this stability has come at the price of greater sales stimulation by everyone," said Jim McDowell, Vice President MINI USA. "MINI has largely managed to stay away from 'sweeteners to the deal' in the past. However, last month we introduced a modest incentive allowing us to track better than our segment year-to-date and continue to improve our sales month-to-month since January."

Every car manufacturer is hurting right now in this economy.

"Lexus passenger cars reported April sales of 7,189 units, a decrease of 47.8 percent from April 2008...Lexus Division light trucks recorded April sales of 7,006 units, down 26.9 percent from the year-ago month."

total of just over 14,000 cars and trucks for lexus...less than BWM again. despite the BMW price premium.

Yeah, and the Camry platform is keeping Lexus ES/RS sales afloat. Friend who works at Toyota dealership said brakes, hoses, etc. are used on Lexus cars serviced at their center. They have a sign that says "We service Lexus for Less." I guess in times of economic crisis the "magic feel" of Lexus dealer experience can only do so much for you.

Hmmm, BMW out sells Lexus worldwide and so far this year in the U.S., so what does that say about Lexus.

BMW has ALWAYS outsold lexus worldwide. only in the US market has lexus exceeded BMW sales volume. and now that appears to be over too.

Fix the headline. BMW dropped 41% as noted above.

Also, why don't you guys stop editorializing these headlines. Just state the facts and leave the opinions to the comments.

For real. The headline is all 'ate' up. BMW may have sold more metal in April, but they suffered a marginally higher loss for that month compared to Lexus.

how did they suffer a greater loss if lexus sales are down 48%? do explain.

BMW 4/09 = (41.3%) The headline is clearly dogsh*t so don't go by that.
Lexus 4/09 = (39.2%)

Hence BMW "suffered a marginally higher loss for that month compared to Lexus."

You've been reading the wrong articles because those are the numbers.

also noteworthy...these numbers include a collapse in sales of the 7 series and Z4 due to new models launching. may and june numbers should get a further boost to account for these new model launches.

you're correct, though the new 7-Series is actually out now. In march it was the best selling car in the class. In April it was 2nd to the S-class. The model BMW is missing most right now is the X3, as the GLK and Q5 are picking up all those sales with the X3 basically non-available. Considering they outsold everyone with no X3 and pretty lackluster 3-Series sales (down almost 50% from last April, and almost outsold this April by the 5-Series, which had a phenomenal month), BMW did pretty well.

yes, jrob. but not in the states. it's only hitting dealers here now. the month of may will be the first full month of availability in the US.

enthusiast, I was referring to the U.S. While April was the first FULL month of availability, the new 7-Series arrived at U.S. dealerships in March. Just not March 1.

Look at the Ford one...."FOMOCO Sales Remain Depressing - Down 31.4% In April". If that's depressing, then BMW's sales are a down right travesty. It's idiocy like this that really kills the credibility of this site.

Can everybody just STFU and calm down for five minutes? I've had enough of these recession-related articles and it's seriously starting to get really annoying.

Hey, I know how we can cure the recession - Everyone STFU for two months and stop whining about The "Big" Three.

I swear I'm gonna disown myself from this website if I see another one of these articles.

Stop the bitterness against BMW huu. Besides, nobody cares about what happens in Canada anyways. It is the forgotten 51st state.

psst. BMW is offering 0.9% on the 2009 BMW 5-series due to the 2010 BMW 5-series hitting the market. The 2 free payments is also due to that reason for the 2009 BMW 5-series. You will notice how BMW is doing it without rebates, but instead using financing and leasing options as a discount instead. Unlike some manufacturers.

Everything about this article represents German fans (including the ones that run this website) and their superiority complex at its best (worst).

BMWs are not superior cars to Lexus, and vice versa. You only tell yourselves that out of a trait of humanity to coax your conscience.
