Toyota Sitting On $30 Billion In Reserves After $6.9 Billion Dollar Loss
Like a Hollywood starlet caught drunk behind the wheel, Toyota's first operating loss looks somehow worse than if it came from a regular car-maker.

For the Japanese producer, the global recession and sharply rising yen ended a record of 70 consecutive years of profitable operations. And with more of a crash than a skid. The company burned through $6.9 billion in the fourth quarter of the year to leave a $4.5 billion full-year loss. Toyota sees worse in store: a 20% slide in revenues in 2010 leading to an $8.5 billion loss.

The jump in the yen, which makes Japanese exports more expensive, cost Toyota twice what it spent on research and development.

Hahaha, Toyota is pumping out tons of sales initiatives to rid their cars, just listen to the radio, it almost sounds as if they will pay you to sign over the car.

Good to see people are finally starting to wake up. Can you guess which company has the most badgewh*res? It's Toyota. People think that by buying Toyota, they get the best reliability on the planet... That may be true, maybe 10 years ago. The competition is becoming just as reliable, and offer better cars for a cheaper price. Toyota thinks they could increase their prices and people would still buy them, simply because they are Toyota! How much does that LC cost again?!

Toyota lost touch with the basics of making and selling excellent cars and is trying to much to be like GM. Also they really stagnated Lexus too much and use very cheap materials on that line. I own Toyo/Lexus so I'm not trying to hate on them, just stating what I see.

Speaking as a true Toyota/Lexus fan....a lot of what you've said is true, unfortunately. The questions are...exactly when will they bounce back from what seems like complacency? Will they churn out many more under-achievers like some car brands did for the better part of the last 30 years or will they nip it in the bud asap? Is it too late to nip it in the bud? With Volkswagen getting closer and closer in their rear-view mirror, they'd be wise to act quickly.

I think the image of toyota trucks has taken a real hit with the bed bounce, rotting frames, failing camshafts, transmissions slipping, failing tail gates, poor fuel economy, and failing suspension, fiascoes. Toyota at one time built simple utilitarian trucks now they build trucks that are more cheap style than real utilitarian substance!

and this affects what, <1% or even < 0.05% of the trucks they make? pfah!

this is NOTHING compared to the literally THOUSANDS of defective GM/chebby trucks cranked out, even YEARS after the problems first become noticed. toyota addresses problems almost IMMEDIATELY.

you never see known problems after the first year.

"so what do you own? a toyota or a lexus?"

Currently, I have a 2005 Lexus LS430 and a 1998 Ford Explorer (for work). I'v owned a 1995 Toyota Corolla(gave it to a local college student in 2006 with nearly 300k miles, ran flawlessly but the heat stopped working towards the end but I know he still has it), a 1997 Toyota 4Runner Limited(briefly) and a 2002 Toyota Camry (still in my family 17X,XXX miles).

Contemplating a new car but I'm all over the road (so to speak)...Maybe a pre-owned Audi A8, a new Lincoln MKS, a leftover Mercedes-Benz E-class or...I'd really like to see the next 5 series...never had a BMW and maybe it's time!

Similar to a lot of global companies. If we all knew exactly how much friggin dough the 10 largest global corporations were just "sitting on" we would burn down their buildings. I bet its at least $150 billion in cash. Probably more.
