Your Tax Dollars At Work? GM Plan Ramps Up Imports And Reduces US Jobs

Your Tax Dollars At Work? GM Plan Ramps Up Imports And Reduces US Jobs
As thousands of General Motors workers await word on more U.S. plant closures, reports that the company plans to import Chinese-made vehicles to the U.S. have created a political problem for the automaker and the White House.

The reports, which GM will neither confirm nor deny, could mean trouble because GM is supported by $15.4 billion in U.S. government loans, largely due to the Obama administration's desire to preserve the company's 90,000 U.S. jobs.

The United Auto Workers charged last week that the Detroit automaker intends to almost double over the next five years the number of vehicles it imports to the U.S. from Mexico, South Korea, China and Japan.

"GM should not be taking taxpayers' money simply to finance the outsourcing of jobs to other countries," Alan Reuther, the union's Washington lobbyist, wrote in a letter to U.S. lawmakers.

I keep waiting to hear that GM is being forced to eliminate their advertising with conservative talk-radio shows like Beck, Hannity, and others. It's just a matter of time!

Why the heck should this get de-boosted? I'm not saying I'm a fan of this happening, I listen to conservative talk-radio often. I just think that the administration will sooner or later realize their conflict of interest in pushing more bailout money that would go into advertising for these guys who are speaking out against them.

With this I officially recognize GM an import company. Still detest them though.

Good for GM, it's about time some of those $73 an hour jobs (after benefits) got cut, especially down to 5cents an hour!

any country is only as strong as its middle class. look around the world, show me a country with a strong middle class that has a strong economy and a strong democracy? you can't. cuz it don't exist.

which is why conservatives hate the middle class. they hate democracy. because they love authoritarian capitalism, which is not much more than a form of a dictatorship. A capitalist dictatorship.

Oh no! What will all the die hard Bowtie lovin' Chivalay fans do now? Will they still put their "Proud to be Union" bumper stickers on their Chinese made General Motors product?

of course they ramp up imports. who wants to make anything in USA anymore? GM here spends more on health care than they do on steel. Its a disaster. And the IDIOT conservatives are stuck on stupid with their blind ideology, instead of looking for solutions that actually work. Never mind that we have had medicare and social security for a while, and a tax payer funded military, police, fire department, schools, roads etc for ever.

Germany and Japan produce things. And they pay people more than 5 cents an hour, which is what the effing retarded conservatives want to do. Instead of a single payer health care system that would solve all this.

DinamoR Medicare and social security are total failures. Police Fire Dept Schools and Roads will never have enough money. The problem is IDIOT Liberalism that has infected capitalism. AS i said before Liberalism is a mental disorder. Lets keep giving government more control and when it doesn't work lets give them more. Yea That works

LMFAO you conservatards are the real mental disorder.

The two times in the last 100 years conservatives had the biggest power in USA: early 1920's and early this decade. Funny how both times were followed by the two biggest economic disasters of the last 100 years also.

Funny.

Well DinamoR This last economic disaster was caused by Liberal Democrats that have controled the USA since January of 2007. The Libs were in power so why didnt they fix it. Ill tell you why. The Democrat Congress did not want to so they can do exactly what they have done, Control Our Liberties. Now the same failed Congress is the one you want to put your future in ?

Badagewhore- They give a damn, but the problem is they have to make a profit. The legacy costs from the UAW drove them to cheapen the cars to squeeze money out of them. This also gave them reliability issues.

Basically the balance of expenses is out of whack with the American companies. The only way they could survive was on the SUV and luxury cars, because both are high mark up items.

k . lets put to bed the myth of "Legacy costs from the UAW" .
Note :I personally dont really care about the UAW as i think they are an unmitigated public relation disaster.

So lets start the facts shall we ?
in the late 90's when GM was raking in the loot , the UAW wasnt the problem and neither were the costs . Why ? UAW pension / health care came out of a set fund that was indexed to Treasury Bills and was adequately funded ...
Then along came the tech boom and Stock market super climb .....
IBM was the first big legacy comapny to simply take its pension plan and index it to .... teh stock market ( S&P ) by investing in mutual funds .. why ? cause the stock market allowed them to set the rate of growth at 11 + % thus causing the pension funds to be over funded . Which meant that they could remove money from it to their profit and loss statement . Wall street loved it ! stock price loved it .. money all around ...
GM loved the above idea and early 2001 did the same ... while they were backslapping each other ... the stock market did a titanic ...
Which meant in 2002 Gm found that their pension plan was ...ahem ... underfunded since the Stock market wasnt giving the 10 % Annual return ...(lol) so they borrowed 13 billion at some significant interest (8%) out of which 8 billion was to address the hole in the pension plan ( thats only for the short term)....
From there started the constant bitching about the UAW despite the fact that Japanese comapanies pay the same through taxes for their workers in Japan , German companies to IG Metall etc...

So in short, lousy decisions by GM management ! aka the 5 billion dollar FIAT fiasco and not UAW are at fault here ...

But yeah .. if you like to listen to conservative radio .. lets blame it on the UAW cause those fucktards invented the weekend and yeah we all know how bad that is ...
Or the democrats ....cause they actually want to save the biggest industrial enginnering firm in america that employs thousands and keeps an bvital enginnering base in this nation.. i mean with OUR tax money .. which could have beeen far more productively spent on another ..urm quarter of a Single F22. !!!

If importing cars would save GM, then they should do it. Unless labor costs in the USA decreases to levels of say, Mexico, Thailand, China, Korea, etc. then some models are simply too expensive to produce "locally".
