UAW And GM At Odds Over Plant Closures And Import Increases
Critical concession talks between General Motors Corp. and the United Auto Workers are being overshadowed by a public spat about the automaker's plans to import vehicles from other countries while it closes 16 U.S. factories.

The fight, which began last week, continues with less than two weeks left before a June 1 deadline for GM and the union to reach a deal on concessions that are a critical part of the automaker's government-ordered restructuring.

If GM can't reach deals with the union, debtholders and other stakeholders by the deadline, the century-old Detroit automaker will be forced into Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. GM has received $15.4 billion in government loans.

GM and the UAW each have a gun to the other's head and the question is: Who is going to back down?

GM's position: (1) Would rather avoid bankruptcy; (2) Can't restructure without UAW's help; (3) Has to send jobs overseas to save costs.

UAW's position: (1) Would rather avoid bankruptcy; (2) Can't concede too much to GM; (3) Can't allow jobs sent overseas.

We all learned when we were 8 yrs old that it was always better to work out a squabble with your younger brother than to let the decision go to Mom (which always resulted in a lose-lose decision).

Despite that knowledge, common sense is not likely to prevail and thus, my money is on bankruptcy where the judge will make all of the hard decisions for both GM and the UAW (to no one's liking).

Why does GM need UAW to restructure? Last I checked there were plenty of non union unemployed people right now.

Good for UAW. Nice to see someone protecting American jobs, otherwise these assholes will ship all the factories to china where they can pay workers 50 cents an hour and work them 16 hours a day.

we needs single payer health care. that is what would save GM. Right now GM spends more on health care than on steel. INSANE.
