Obama Adminstration Deals a Crippling Blow By Lowering Emissions And Increasing Mileage Standards
The Obama administration will unveil national tailpipe emissions standards and mileage requirements Tuesday, which will force automakers to dramatically boost the efficiency of vehicles by 2016, but give them a single national standard.

Under a compromise being announced tomorrow, California and 13 other states efforts to impose a 30 percent reduction in tailpipe emissions will be approved and extended to the rest of the country. The federal government is expected to set mileage standards that are consistent with those requirements -- about 42 mpg by 2016 for cars and at least 26.6 mpg for light trucks.

California and many other states have long sought to impose their own tailpipe emissions standards, but were stymied by the Bush administration, which refused to grant them a waiver under the Clean Air Act to do so. Automakers fought in court for years to block the standards and lobbied government officials to stop them.

I don't want a hybrid... or a diesel... or a hybrid diesel... I guess my next vehicle will be a "classic" car with a 350 v8.

Wow, Dino, you've really bought into what the media and Government want you to believe.

Why don't you start by looking at where most of our money for oil actually goes. I'll give you a hint: CANADA.

The middle east is a bit further down the list. Don't believe the scare tactics, do some research.

"LOL" all you want, but the fact, which I even gave you the numbers on, is that we DO NOT SEND BILLIONS TO TERRORIST SUPPORTING REGIMES as you first stated (and which has been a mantra of Obama's campaign and Presidency.

We send billions to Canada and Mexico, and then many countires that ARE NOT Pakistan or Afghanistan or other supporters of terrorism.

You cannot argue my facts, because they are indeed facts. LOL at yourself, because you are the fool.

Here's another fact that you probably cannot comprehend...the US has the third largest reserves of fossil fuels in the world.

Go get educated, then LOL at your ignorance.

I am reminded of something Harold Korell, the CEO of Southwestern Energy, the company which has been the top performer in the S&P 500 for eight years running-better even than Apple, said at a fund raiser I attended a couple of weeks ago.

Political laws do not nullify or trump economic or physical laws.

You cannot shorten the critical technological path by mandate without inducing massive system losses. Further, there is a toll in terms of the end product utility. You arrive at an inferior product and a higher cost.

Well duhhh. The automakers are already broke, so you slap not only one very expensive measure on them to complete quickly but now two... and don't forget the new rollover requirements,

Obama has yet to be proven so I will stay mum on that one. Maybe he has a master plan to take over Canada and Mexico....shhhh!

If we get forced into econo cans They will only be able to seat two people if they are of size ( political correctness ) . The driver will have it's normal postion , except the seat will be all the way back , hence eliminating anyone directly in back . The passenger will have to sit diagonly to the driver in the back seat because there will be no room on the passenger side of car due to the drivers gerth spilling over to the right . Nope , new fuel mileage ideas no good . it will put too many cars on the road

The blow is to our domestic car makers that will struggle to meet the new requirements on top of all the problems. I think Obama means well, but it's just not a good time for the car companies. Also, USA is not Europe or Asia and never will be, so I wish all the other countries who say we have big cars, houses or asses would just mind their business, seeing how we keep this whole planet spinning. Just because your lives suck, don't be dragging us down.

And how does this help American workers when the American companies don't have any of these kind of cars that are world beaters against the competition.

Makes it even harder for them to comeback.

http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/hot_lists/car_shopping/green_machines/pml_flightlink_electric_mini_cooper_car_news This car has 640 BHP and is already better on gas than the new standard, for the people like you and I that like HP there is no need to worry too much. My biggest concern is that none of the companies have smart enough people to match PML's economy and power. This tech could be put into a Hummer H-1 and probably get similar economy as the prius, check out the link above before you make an informed opinion.

Higher mileage standards means smaller cars. This will further accelerate the decline of the American automotive industry since The Big Three have never profited from making small cars (their profit has come from SUV's and trucks). My prediction is that Americans will drive their older, bigger cars longer rather than being forced to drive econoboxes.

Just a little tangent here...

If America completely outlawed fossil fuel burning vehicles and we all walked or rode bicycles, China and Inda alone will be burning more oil than we could ever dream of in the next 20 years.

Why would we choose to hamper our industry and consumer choices if the "goal" is moot due to lack of global consensus? This is exacgtly why we didn't (and shouldn't have) sign the Kyoto Protocol.

Also, would it be easier and more cost effective to ban any vehicle that gets less than 20mpg now? We'd probably get 75% of the way ther in one year. That would be much more effective...
