Vw Scirocco R breaks cover
VW is coming out with its latest high-performance VW Scirocco coupe, a vehicle that has been officially exempted from sale in the US.

The first sign that something like this was coming was when VW introduced the GT24 race concept in May 2008 at the Austrian Worthersee Tour tuning show which was followed, in the same year, by the Scirocco Study R concept at the Bologna Motor Show. The latest performance version, dubbed the Scirocco R (not the Scirocco 20T like all the websites were speaking, but the readers of 4wheelsnews knew that, as we reported in this post) will be making its introduction together with a similar Golf-based variant at the Nurburgring 24 hour endurance competition this weekend.

I do love living in America until I hear about all the awesome cars that we never see or are able to drive.

VW's official line why they wont bring the Scirocco here is that it would have to be priced too high to make a profit. That is total BS. The car costs less to make then the VW GTI.I think it would definately work here if it came in as the R20. VW is afraid it would hurt GTI sales. But if the R20 is priced at 33 grand fully loaded it's quite away from the price of the GTI. The reason the R32 sales tanked was that it looks identical to a GTI but with a V6 engine.Further the car was heavier so performance was barely any better then the GTI. VW only brought it in with the dual clutch. So now VW is replacing the R32 with the same engine from the R20 and it will again come with AWD. Again the cars will look pretty identical. So the question is why would people want to go out and spend an extra 10 grand for AWD and a turbo 4 when the FWD version is maybe 3/10ths of a second slower to 60. Further it's predesessor(R32) did not do well even though it had a V6 engine. Don't you think that when people spend that extra 10 grand that they can expect a more visual feast rather then a car that looks the same.the Scirocco R20 has a wider track then the GTI.It sits lower,it is a lot more visually agressive. It's FWD. It will probably accelerate slightly better and certainly handle better then the GTI.The bottom line is it is more special looking and therefore could justify the 10 grand higher price. The GTI is an will always be a hatchback. The Scirocco is a hatchback that can pass for a sportscar. It seems to me if you spend more money for a car because you like looks and performance you should get looks and performance.I think VW simply has it wrong here.

Well since the Scirocco is based on the same architecture as the EOS they should simply turn the Eos into a Scirocco Coupe/Convertable and still cal it an Eos.They just need to widen the track ad the Scirocco front and rear ends to it and restyle the folding top to make it look less "Frumpy".Put the R20 engine in it,tune the suspension and WA LA the the Scirocco/err redesigned EOS.Since the Eos is already in a different price catagory then the GTI make it more agressive and a better drive. That will surely increase sales. VW are you listening????
