Japanese Automakers Become Overjoyed As Obama Plays Right Into Their Court
Japanese automakers on Wednesday praised President Obama's new rules to push green vehicles and transform the U.S. auto industry -- a shift that likely puts Japan's manufacturers at an advantage.

Toyota Motor Corp., the maker of the Prius hybrid, which gets 48 miles per gallon in U.S. city driving, gave Obama "high praise" for promoting technology to boost mileage and fight global warming.

Obama announced rules Tuesday that would bring new cars and trucks sold in the United States by 2016 to an average of 35.5 miles per gallon (15 kilometers per liter), about 10 mpg (4.2 kpl) more than today's standards.

Passenger cars will be required to get 39 mpg (16.5 kpl), light trucks 30 mpg (12.7 kpl). That means cars and trucks on American roads will have to become smaller, lighter and more efficient.

Already, Japan's automakers have benefited from consumer demand for cars with good mileage and lower emissions.

Just because the Earth's temperature is gradually increasing over time does not mean that weather patterns are going to immediately stop happening. The Earth is still going to experience snow, rain, heat etc, just at more intense levels, i.e. MORE snow, MORE rain, MORE heat etc.

no you don't get it. i don't think you get anything. and the fact that a dumb, anti-intelectual moron like you was president for 8 years, says all we need to know about why shit hit the fan

Hahaha, and you base your claims off of what? Lies given to you by people who's job depend purely on promoting being "green". Seriously, compared to many ice records and very early written records the 20th century has actually been a period of strangely calm weather patterns, look back to the mini ice age of the middle ages. Was that caused by all the black smithing? Seriously, I think all greenies are people who growing up believed that they were the cause of their parents divorce. Anything that we do is traced back by these people as dangerous to the environment. and the source of almost every global catastrophy. If only we listened to them and their agendas... maybe buying a prius will save the world *eyes roll* or at least help fatten their pay cheques.

Wooow, do you know anything about climate change?

I know absolutely nothing about climate change. I have looked into the topic several times and realized that is all still speculation, and half assed guesses at what is happening, most of which end up blaming people on behalf of someone elses political agenda. People are easily fooled, look at the dihydrogen monoxide scare.

but I get where you are coming from, life is more fun when you are saving the world. :P

Hmmm...001 may have predicted this yesterday... ;)

"In my opinion they are dancing in the aisles at Honda, Toyota and Hyundai thanks to this initiative.

THEY will reap ALL the benefits, not the 3 (We have deleted the word BIG because now in our eyes they are just the 3)."

Why have the domestics refuse to compete? Customers believe that they are getting value from the purchase of Japanese and Korean cars.

Japanese auto makers already have an advantage. They've had it for a loong loong time.

If idiot conservatives had not fought every initiative to increase mileage on cars during the last 30 years, maybe, just maybe, japanese automakers would not have this advantage.

And if all Detroit can do is make 8 mpg Hummers, then F*** detroit

Yes. Quit trying to portray a conspiracy on behalf of the Japanese. It is totally inappropriate. It is not Japan's fault that American car companies could not adapt to a new mindset and engineer fuel-efficient cars that Americans actually want to buy.
