The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo adds new facets to BMW’s Ultimate Driving Machine tradition and refines the concept of first-class travel. For the first time, attributes of an elegant sedan, a contemporary Sports Activity Vehicle and a classic Gran Turismo are masterfully melded into a single, harmonious vehicle concept.

The traditional European term Gran Turismo (Grand Touring) was first applied by Italian carmakers in the 1950s when they combined the performance, handling, and style of a 2-seat sport car with luxurious amenities and luggage room for each occupant. BMW’s new Gran Turismo nurtures this tradition in its own contemporary way, providing exceptional space, style, luxury, and comfort for four passengers , plus the performance and driving pleasure of a BMW.

It does so with 21st-century performance. BMW’s wide-ranging EfficientDynamics initiative endows this new automobile with an outstanding balance between performance and efficiency. Thanks to its innovative twin turbo V-8 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission, the 550i Gran Turismo can accelerate from rest to 60 mph in just 5.4 seconds, yet delivers remarkable fuel efficiency in everyday driving.

Design: Abundant sportiness, elegance, luxury and versatility.
•    Typical BMW proportions communicate dynamic character and sportiness.
•    Long wheelbase and graceful, coupe-like roofline.
•    An interior with contemporary design, generous dimensions and premium materials.

The BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo radiates a unique blend of sportiness and stylish presence. Typical BMW proportions, four doors with frameless windows, and a coupe-like roofline combine into a harmonious, highly distinctive silhouette that visually represents this vehicle’s unusual blend of capabilities.

This vehicle’s visual presence is a captivating fusion of established BMW identity and new elements. Its elongated hood and long 120.7-inch wheelbase coalesce with a “greenhouse” set well aft and a fastback roofline into a profile that’s immediately recognizable as a BMW, yet at the same time communicates a new vehicle concept. From the first glance, it’s clear that this is an exceptionally roomy conveyance, yet also a highly dynamic one.

Inside the 5 Series Gran Turismo, users find generous dimensions, inspired contemporary design, and individualized luxury. Sweeping contours – such as those of the interior door panels – combine with elegant and premium-quality materials to create an ambiance that’s equally satisfying to front and rear occupants.

At the front: thoroughly modern, traditionally BMW.

The Gran Turismo’s frontal aspect has a marked forward thrust, with its traditional BMW “kidney grille” leaning slightly forward and emphasized by its separation from the flanking (also traditional) four round headlights.

BMW’s signature corona rings have taken on several functions: as parking lights, as an identifying element when the headlights are on, and as Daytime Running Lamps – this last with 100% of their lighting power, the other functions with just 10%. For the first time, on the Gran Turismo they employ LED technology.

In profile: frameless door windows and a new form of “Hofmeister Kink.”

The 5 Series Gran Turismo is also the first 4-door BMW to have frameless door windows – a feature BMW usually reserves for Coupes and Convertibles. These give an “open” look to side and angled views of the vehicle.

Over the years, another window detail has become a tradition: BMW’s so-called “Hofmeister Kink,” named after Wilhelm Hofmeister, who headed BMW design when this shape first appeared. On the Gran Turismo, it appears in “6-window” (3 windows per side) form in the rear quarter windows aft of the rear doors, framed in matte black plus chrome or optional high-gloss Shadowline black trim.

At the rear: aesthetically and functionally distinctive

Another BMW design tradition, in evidence since a new-generation 7 Series was introduced for 1988 is the freely interpreted L-shape of the rear lighting clusters. On the 5 Series Gran Turismo this theme is retained but newly interpreted LED lighting wraps far around the body sides and provides yet another recognizable BMW design cue. Together, these elements reinforce the impression of the Gran Turismo’s wide stance, which is further enhanced by strong horizontal lines spanning the bi-modal trunk and likewise tying in with character lines of the side profile.

Function, more even than the handsome aesthetics, is the main attraction of the 5 Series Gran Turismo’s interesting rear view. Below the rear window is a conventional, though shorter-than-usual, sedan trunklid that opens separately to reveal a fully enclosed trunk – sealed off from the passenger cabin by a movable partition that renders the interior as quiet as that of a sedan.

i don't get it. between the 5 series wagon and the x6, i think that BMW already accomodates anyone who would want a vehicle like this. what are they thinking? It looks like an x6 with a rear end that is stupid instead of sexy.

Compared to an X6 it weighs about 1000lb less and seats 5 people instead of 4. Compared to a 5-Series wagon, you're not forced to get AWD, it's available with the V8 TT, and it doesn't look like a wagon.

It's a niche car. They're not going to make or sell a zillion of them, but I think there are enough people out there who for the reasons above wouldn't have bought an X6 or 535xiT that would at least consider this. I would.

I fail to see where a fifth person would sit in this car, unless it was in the someone's lap or the boot. Based on these pictures, this vehicle only supports 4 passengers.

that's probably because you didn't read the press release. The standard seating configuration is five people, which I would imagine is how 99% of them will be equipped. There's an optional "rear luxury seating" package that changes the rear into two power bucket seats, similar to the Lexus LS. Whether the photos show the rear luxury seats with a console in between or that's just the center armest folded down for the 5 passenger version, I have no idea. But both will be available.

Interior kills Audis. Easily.

Dials graphics are also better.

BMW diesel engines kill Audis engines as well.

But liftback and BMW simply don't belong together.

Holy sh1t is that an ugly car.

And the back end - rear tail lamps, especially, like like a Hyundai Elantra on the inside - actually get larger as they wrap. Just nasty looking.

With the exception of the first Z4 and the last 7-series designs, I've never hated the look of a BMW as much as this one. I hope it bombs.

The interior is hot, not doubt about it, best BMW interior I have seen in a while.

I just don't see the point of building this car, it can only carry 4 passengers, why not a nice BMW station wagon, you could carry 5 people and still have all the storage space of this. This car makes no sense to me, estate wagon FTW........

again, as the article (and every article that preceded this one) states, it seats five in standard configuration, it only seats four if someone springs for the optional rear luxury seating package. I doubt most people will equip it that way, seeing as how most people don't even get that package on a $100k 7-Series.

I stand by the belief that it is better to design a familiar/predictable but beautiful car than a novel but ugly one; I say change not for the sake of change, but for the sake of something better.

This is why I've now slotted Audi as my new favorite over BMW. Like Aston Martin, their (Audi's) designs may not make leaps and bounds, but you KNOW it will always be beautiful; BMW seems insistent on just having something new, attractive or not.

I've yet to see this car in the metal, but there is no way that rear end will settle; it looks like it were already in an accident! WHY does BMW believe they have to bend and twist EVERY single part of the body? What is so wrong with elegant simplicity, like on an Audi, or even their own current 5-Series (save for the odd headlights and extra hood creases)? Key lines where needed, and let the smooth, flowing metal do the rest of the work?

It will possibly be more tolerable in the metal, but that's just the word, isn't it? Tolerable.

This is the hatchback version of the new 5-Series for Euro's only.

I will wait till i see it on the road but i have a feeling BMW might have cocked this one up.

Other than Citroens, I haven't seen any mid-size hatchback that I've liked (at least I can't seem to recall any off the top of my head). The same goes for this one. The view from the rear seems to show the width to height ratio to be off (a bit too tall for a GT designation). Maybe it's the 2-dimensional picture that distort the ratio but it doesn't look right.

Note as wide as I thought it was really going to be.

If the roof wasn't so "high", it would look much slicker as a 5-door hatch. The use of a taller roof basically ruined the overall execution. Start over.

My question is this. Will BMW ever produce a truely attractive car again. Lets analize this by model.
1)BMW 3 series sedan and Coupe-Not Ugly but not beautiful either. Not a stand out in design.Average to OK.
2)BMW 5 series-Less ugly then before.
3)BMW 7 series-No longer ugly but average plain
4)BMW X3 Borderline ugly
5)BMW X5 Borderline average
6)BMW X6 UUUGLY..period
7)BMW 6 series-As long as you don't look at the rear end average to good. When you factor in the rear end boderline ugly.Ditto convertable
8)The new 5 series GT-It's like they took the X6 lowered it slightly and made it a bit more angular-bottom line-still UUUGLY.Why the name GT?
9) Finally the 1 series-sedan borderline ugly, convertable borderline average. So there you have it-not one truely attractive car from BMW.

Pontiac Aztec owners rejoice! BMW has given your car a minor facelift and now own the design also but it's now under the BMW name. They should probably also change the name to reflect the what the car looks like so they should call it the BMW ULTIMATE UGLY.

This car obviously will always do better in Europe with that fastback shape than in America where hatches = cheap but it is an interesting concept that Porsche also seems to have some faith in. As a car enthusiast, I lust for cars that like many BMW's have classic proportions with that balanced chiseled look that they do very well in the M cars as an example such that for me, I wouldnt consider this GT because it looks a bit awkward at the end of the day. But I could imagine someone could go to a dealer, see an X5 or X6 and think "nope thats too tall, big" and than head over to look at a 550 GT, sit in one with that gorgeous interior, take it on a drive and be completely convinced by this car subsequently taking it home to further fall in love with its practicality, luxury, and reasonable sportiness.

I just watched the YouTube video of this new BMW GT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_BqU3YiwoQ&feature=channel
to see if this car hopefully would look better in a video than in still pictures and boy I was still very disappointed it's much uglier in the video. The Gran Turismo has more functionality and space than the standard sedan but so did the Aztec. This new BMW really better look 100+ times better in real life or it will be the new of King of Ugly cars and sorry Pontiac Aztec and previous generation BMW Bangle Butt 7 series you have been dethroned.
