California Refuses To Be Upstaged By Obama And Proceeds Work On Stiffer 2017 Economy Rules
California is planning the next stage of clean car standards even as U.S. President Barack Obama announces federal plans based on the state's model, its top climate change official said on Tuesday.

Obama on Tuesday set 2016 mileage and carbon emissions goals for U.S. fleets, which will be codified by the federal Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency.

"California will be immediately getting to work on what the standards should be for beyond 2016," Mary Nichols, who chairs the California Air Resources Board, said in a telephone interview. She expects "a much more stringent standard."

How about we ban cars completely and we all walk? That way you don't have these politicians trying to outdo each other with these unrealistic CAFE standards. Gasoline internal combustion engine technology isn't evolving fast enough to keep up with these unrealistic CAFE standards.

haha so a dictatorship is when government wants us to have clean air and energy independence? not torture and illegal wars??

And since republicans don't oppose tax payer funded police, fire department, military, schools, roads, medicare and social security, they are just as big "socialists" as democrats

drop the MPG altogether. Don't you see the writing on the wall people? The internal combustion engine is a DINOSAUR. Start developing the alternatives folks.

I think California needs to get their state budget balanced first...lets worry about 2009 and not so much about 2017. There might not be a California in 2017...After all, the Governator knows "Skynet" takes over any time now!

I wish California would slide in the ocean and take Arnold and Nancy and every other nut job that resides there with it.

California needs to elect a democrat, not some dumbass republican governor. Repubs and their idiotic tax cuts for the rich, eliminating financial regulation, crazy spending is what leads to this. republicans killed the property tax, so now they are going bankrupt. what a shock.

This is just going to cost automakers billions more. You think GM and Chrysler can afford to produce a significant amount of 40 or even 50 mpg cars for the 2017 MY? Hell, we've been waiting years for GM to produce it's FIRST 40 mpg car, the Volt. You think Chevy can AVERAGE 40 mpg in just 8 years? Look at how far they've come since 2001, obviously not far enough to prevent a significant amount of market share from going to the imports.

The Governator is saying this now, until some Supreme Court case will pop up and say, "Sorry, California, you're being a bunch of jackasses. This is federal turf." If that doesn't happen, is the Government of California preparing for all of the unemployed salespeople asking for welfare checks when Porsche, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and countless other luxury automakers pull out of the California market? Future MPG standards to politicians are just writing on a piece of paper that create the illusion of progress, but to serious businesspeople, it can make the difference between keeping thousands hired and looking elsewhere for profit.

This is the future, a F-150 that does 100MPG! With 640bhp! This satisfies the greenes and the auto enthusiast! We both win! I don't think that the gov. will like this! Less gas tax!
