Porsche Cayman S Ranked Best Road Trip Car- What Are Your Top 5 Best And WORST Road Trip Rides?
In a recent comparison on KBB, the Porsche Cayman S won a Top 10 cars for a road trip award.

"The 2009 Cayman S could just be the ultimate machine in which to discover America while flying solo. With room for two and over 9.2 cubic feet of luggage space, you have more than enough room for both the necessities and the niceties for any road trip.

And, the Cayman S with its 3.4-liter 320 horsepower Direct Fuel Injected (DFI) Vario-Cam Plus equipped engine, will take you from 0-60 in 4.9 seconds with a top speed of 172 mph.   The Cayman S’s performance requires no sacrifice in efficiency; it will take you from Chicago, down along Route 66, the “Mother Road,”  to the Santa Monica Pier, all 2278 miles of it, on approximately 78.5 gallons of fuel, an average of 29 highway mpg, when equipped with Porsche’s revolutionary PDK transmission."

Gotta love the performance/mileage mix on the Cayman S and ANY Porsche.

It's one of the most underrated features that a Porsche delivers and certainly deserving of an award like this.

We thought it would be fun this Memorial Day Weekend to do a Best/Worst list of summer road trip cars.

Let us know your top 5 BEST cars for a road trip and the 5 WORST vehicles to take a summer road trip in and tell us why.

What a weird list. The Audi R8 as an excellent car for a road trip?

And then you list the Ford Explorer, VW Eurovan and Mercedes GL550 as the worst? Those three cars are better suited to a long road trip than the Audi R8 or Lexus GS450h will ever be.

What are you talking about? The R8 is an amazing car for a road trip. The interior is luxurious and comfortable, the quattro can handle anything. Not to forget that its an AUDI R8!!

I've taken my R8 all down the Oregon Coast from Vancouver, BC and I've had no complaints. While it's stiffer than my S for a super car you can't complain. As for the Cayman S I'm not sure but I would assume it's a similar comfort rating with the R8. The interior spacing is a tad tight for my liking on a road trip but hey it fits two golf bags in the rear, got to love that.

me thinks the title needs to be edited to single-man road trip cars vs. family cars better yet, single-man road trip cars that will guarantee you get laid.

I did a 2,200 mile trip with my wife in my Boxster, and it was quite good, though IMHO our BMW 330i would have been a more comfortable choice (went for the Boxster because of some great top-down opportunities on the coast, and it was worth it). The problem with the Boxster/Cayman is the engine firewall gives you either room to stretch your legs OR ability to recline, but not both at the same time (at least for people about 6' or taller). The other thing is that a Porsche always adds a bit of mental worry about where you park, at least for cheapskates like me that like to stay at any motel that is on the road (sleeping, not luxury). No question, though, these cars love long road trips and the great steering feedback gives you this telepathic relationship with the road even as you're exhausted.

The 750iL? Now that is a joke. The worst rated car in its class and it is the top pick for best ride? Just shows how BMW overhype continues to get you.

Sports cars make poor road trip choices in my experience. For a long road trip you'd want something with a high level of comfort, room and perhaps payload capacity.

I don't see how the Ford Explorer is a bad road trip car. I have drove one and it was pretty good especially for passenger comfort. The S-class for sure because I was on a 4 hour journey in 2005 S500 and it was one of the most comfortable car trips I ever had.

BEST: Benz S550 - more efficient, ultimate comfort long haul massaging sports seats, proven safety/prevention electronics
2nd BEST: BMW 750i - more sporty yes, but complaints of engine drone at certain RPM needs to be addressed, so on a long haul where you are eating up 200 miles at a time, handling becomes less relevant than pure comfort

WORST: any nervous small sport tuned car - sitting for 2 hours at a time eating up 90MPH on straight interstate highways means handling is irrelevant, so why even bother with the tight sport suspension?

On a road trip I like to turn on the cruise control, kick back, and relax. I don't see how a small car would take care of that.

The evil greedy Porsche AG empire is holding back the Cayman in order to protect the aged decrepid 911. We need to punish Porsche by boycotting all Porsches and letting all potential Porsche customers know how much a better car Porsche could be offering for a better price. Spread the word. Internet Porsche Boycott. Free the Cayman!

Hate to break it to you, but the Porsche Empire has fallen, its leader is about to be chased out of town, and Volkswagen and Audi are about swallow it whole. That is the new reality, and Porsche is so debt-laden that it needs a 2 Billion Euro bail out for the German government and VW-Audi have stop negotiating with Porsche until Porsche comes clean on how it played with its books and then Porsche will be merged into a bigger VAG or Auto Union or whatever they call it.

This car obviously will always do better in Europe with that fastback shape than in America where hatches = cheap but it is an interesting concept that Porsche also seems to have some faith in. As a car enthusiast, I lust for cars that like many BMW's have classic proportions with that balanced chiseled look that they do very well in the M cars as an example such that for me, I wouldnt consider this GT because it looks a bit awkward at the end of the day. But I could imagine someone could go to a dealer, see an X5 or X6 and think "nope thats too tall, big" and than head over to look at a 550 GT, sit in one with that gorgeous interior, take it on a drive and be completely convinced by this car subsequently taking it home to further fall in love with its practicality, luxury, and reasonable sportiness.

I agree...for "fun factor" it is hard to beat the Cayman S. It handles better then the Turbo. My biggest fun-factor though has been, and will always be, my now ex-Aston Martin. Speed, handling, comfort, and the greatest "gee whiz" factor one could ever drive. The number of Ferrari's and Lambo's in the US far exceed the number of Astons, (especially around here), and as such, they will always the most stares/inquiries/(or challenges from pimply faced 18 y.o's in their Mitsibushi Eclipise's.)

Going to probably be an unpopular choice but my Nissan Armada 4x4 is the best road trip car ever IMO. Last summer, I upgraded my shocks to Rachos, added a fresh set of Michelins and we did 15 states, the wife, two kids, and the dog. Everyone had REAL room to stretch out even the dog. All of our luggage barely made a dent in cargo space. the sunroof and huuge windows let in far more light than we needed plus I was towing my 22 foot boat. The Armada didn't even break a sweat, quiet comfortable cruising averaging about 18 MPG thanks to my Bullydog ECU programmer. There was NOWHERE the Armada couldn't go. Mountains, no problem, beach sand, no problem, torrential rain, didn't even notice it.

We did 5 states a couple of years ago in my 745 and it wasn't nearly as good of a vacation, we always needed more room, ended up having to fedex souvenirs back home and the gas mileage was honestly, about the same.

If you actually plan on actually doing things, or doing any serious shopping, SUV FTW on any road trip........

I own a Cayman S PDE-1 (and BMW 550i) which i just took on 1,100 mile trip...loved it..but would not rank it #1. I make these rankings based solely on cars I have either owned, or have extended expereince with.

1. Aston Martin DB9
2. Mercedes SL 6.3 AMG (test drove extensively, almost bought)
3. Audi S8
4. BMW 550i (like it better then 750, just as smooth, yet tighter)
5. Porsche Panamera (test drove...amazing!)

The Worst! (again, based only on personal expereince, for I am sure there are much worse then these)

1. Lexus (i have owned 3 over time...although comfortable, you would fall asleep on a road trip out of sheer boredom)

2. Honda S-2000 (i bought one as an intermediary while waiting for my Aston Martin to come in...took it on 1,600 mile trip..spent the following two weeks at chiropractor)

3. Vette Z06 (lots and lots of test driving..a blast around town, would become a real drag on road trip)

4. Hennesy Viper 850 (test drove only...would not want to take further then a quarter-mile, straight-line). I think I lost 20% of my hearing after one block. Lots of fun. Ideal car for a masochist.

5. Ford GT (test drove only). This would actually be my number one road trip car (as opposed to my least favorite) if I did not have to take out a line of credit just to fuel the thing. This car woudl cost twice the purchase price in gasoline expensive over a 3 year period if driven as your 'road trip' car.

Side note. I have been ridiculed by Contractor friends I know that own pick-up trucks, telling me in both instances in regards to my Porsche and Aston Martin that: (i quote)..."you can't haul sh*t in that little thing". To them I say..."oh yes i can, I can haul ass...in fact, with this car...'ass finds me, I dont even have to go looking'. :)

My wife's A6 Avant was very comfy crossing Canada at high speed with 2 large dogs in the back (twice).
A6 Quattro Avant +++

I've gone from Hamilton, Canada to Monterrey Mexico in an F-250 pickup.
Ford F-250 ---

I've gone Vancouver to Ontario, Canada in a Eurovan, and Vancouver to Mexico in a VW Transporter Truck (Eurovan-based 1-ton crew-cab) and they are very comfy with great visibility, but a bit thirsty and not great in cross-winds (Eurovans are still in production, just not sold here)
Eurovan +

And I once drove Vancouver to LA via Cape Breton Island, Cape Cod, Key West, South Padre Island, Saltillo MX, and Carlsbad NM in a 1973 Datsun 610. The night before the trip I yanked out the Jatco 3-speed AUTO and dropped in a 280ZX 5-speed (some fabrication required) and had no problems. I racked up over 16,500 MILES on that trip. And got 40 miles to an imperial gallon from the SOHC L-18.
But comfort? .... I don't think so ... give me a Cayman or that new Panamera thing!

In a few months I'm planning on going Vancouver to Boston in my wife's 2009 TDI Wagon Hi-Line with DSG. Its a customer-visit trip, returning via Washington DC, St. Louis, Colorado (7 stops), and Salt Lake City. It will be a bit cramped, but otherwise should be good.

#1 road-rocket lead-sled ... Audi A8 with V8-TDI power! :)
(its in production ... we just can't buy them ... yet)
