Realizing the full effect of American employment of the U.S Auto industry lawmakers want Obama to slow down on GM, Chrysler

WASHINGTON – Lawmakers appealed to the Obama administration on Friday to slow down the restructuring of General Motors and Chrysler, wary of shuttered car dealerships, job losses and the big unknown of a GM bankruptcy.

"We are asking President Obama to call 'time-out' on his automobile task force," said Rep. Steve LaTourette, R-Ohio.

Members of Congress urged the White House to re-examine its work to stabilize the U.S. auto industry, prompted by sweeping plans outlined last week by Chrysler LLC and General Motors Corp. to shutter hundreds of car dealerships.

They said a pending June 1 deadline for a GM bankruptcy created more uncertainty for the industry, and could lead to a rash of more job losses and dealership closings.

Thirty-six members of Congress, mostly Republican,
While many auto plants are confined to Rust Belt states, the loss of car dealership jobs affect communities throughout the country. With an upcoming Memorial Day recess looming, members of Congress are expected to field questions about the job losses.

While GM has not made its list public, Chrysler has identified 789 dealerships in 49 states that are scheduled to be closed. Only Alaska was spared.

"These dealers deserve a little more than a pink slip in the mail," wrote Missouri Sens. Claire McCaskill, a Democrat, and Kit Bond, a Republican.

The job losses have also brought vows of congressional oversight. Sens. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas, the ranking members on the Senate Commerce Committee, said they would hold hearings on the dealerships in early June.

How stupidly said. Who gets the largest % of $$$$ and endorsements by unions? Not Republicans. Besides, both party brands are ruined- neither stand for what they were intended to & are both only about devisiveness. Most people in out country are in the middle, not the two extremes. The parties would have us believe the opposite & that we're all at odds with one another. This divisiveness is the only thing that gives them relevance & the ability to have "control". Parties shouldn't be in "control"-- the PEOPLE should. We are first and foremost a nation led by her people, well at least we used to be. Today, Memorial Day, remember that, and those who fought giving the ultimate sacrifice of their own lives to give us the chance to fix this mess & restore true liberty and the pursuit of liberty.

Spoken like a true partisan idiot. In case you're too slow to realize this, the Democrats are the ones keeping GM and Chrysler on life support with taxpayer money, writing off their sham "loans", and keeping their failed businesses alive so the unions can keep their cushy salaries and benefit payments going. The GOP is just noting that in their hasty blatantly-illegal "bankruptcy" restructuring, they're still eliminating lots of jobs; they're just non-union jobs and businesses which didn't give billions to the Democrats, so they don't care as much.

On an unrelated note, you do make a strong case for the filed education system in wherever you are from...

Slowing down is what Gm and Chrysler has been doing for almost 20 years now. Thats why they are where they are. Obama is doing what should have been done 10 or 15 years ago! Why should he slow down now that he is positioning the US auto industry for the next "sales boom"? Bang, bang, bang. Get it done already.
