Toyota Reportedly Planning to Give Its Hybrid Technology To GM
An unconfirmed report appears in the Japanese newspaper, the Daily Yomiuri, citing senior executives which claims Japanese automaker Toyota is prepared to give its core hybrid technology to GM.
Toyota supposedly wishes to offer GM the technology that underlies the Prius and other Toyota vehicles should GM go into bankruptcy. The intellectual property under consideration is patented technology for “increasing fuel economy by controlling the movement of the engine and the motor.”
Such a move reportedly would benefit Toyota by allowing its technology to become the de facto world-wide standard thereby continuing to accelerate its improvement and cost effectiveness.

Toyota is said to be concerned that failure of GM to successfully restructure could further collapse the North American auto market, potentially bringing down suppliers, and having significant repercussions on Toyota. Toyota is expected to post losses for two consecutive years and the return of the North American market is felt to be critical for Toyota’s recovery.
Toyota believes its hybrid technology is superior to what GM has developed thus far and is concerned that failure to achieve high fuel efficiency is one reason for GM’s current plight. GM is described as having fallen significantly behind Toyota in developing fuel efficient vehicles because of a long-standing focus on hydrogen fuel cell development, a market for which has not materialized.

This is a smart move by Toyota. Why not implement their Hybrid technology to the next largest auto manufacturer. This will solidify Toyota's Hybrid technology as the industry standard. This will in-turn, make hybrids more cost effective for consumers. Having GM rely on Toyota puts Toyota on the top of auto manufacturing world.

It may be a smart move for Toyota but stupid move for Chev to buy dated un-economical tech, check this link out and then tell me who is in the lead! http://www.hipadrive.com/sema.html No competition!

It will also lower hybrid costs if all the suppliers are making the same platform. It's to bad GM wasted all those billions on that stupid skateboard car...

GM's HyWire concepts were interesting. As more confidence is gained in fuel cell technology, it'll become a bit more useful.

Toyota's Hybrid synergy tech would help GM to realize lower fuel consumption for their smaller cars.

Something tells me that Toyota may consider using GM's 2-mode hybrid transmissions for its larger vehicles (Tundra, Sequoia, Land Cruiser, GX, LX, etc) to also get better fuel efficiency from those models. And sharing-of-hybrid-tech or partnership would make a lot of sense.

watch out for the Japs

I'm a Lexus fan, but I know that Japanese are pretty sneaky when it comes to business. The hybrid technology they originally leased to Nissan were just basic (and very crappy) fundamentals of a hybrid system.
The most of the hard work Toyota had on perfecting their systems probably won't be part of the deal.

(The example above is just one of many - think about the CA plant that Toyota and GM managed under partnership.)
I'm not hating... just saying... and warning GM.

Are you really implying that Nissan didn't know exactly what they were getting? Please. They didn't want to have to do all the research and Toyota didn't want to give them their top of the line tech(or nissan didn't want to pay for it). Nissan wanted to badge a car as a hybrid and got their wish. As for the GM/Toyota plant it is a very successfull partnership. I'm sure that Pontiac dealers have been happy with the Vibe they've been able to sell for years.

You are dead wrong "theoptimisticpessimist". Ford's hybrid may be comparible to Toyota's first generation and that may be giving Ford credit. Their hybrid system is an "on/off" functionality. Toyota's uses the batteries contantly unlike for where the battery system only works when the gas engine doesn't. Not very effective.
Toyota's system is synergistic of the engine hence the name Synergy Drive. Two totally different systems. When Ford can manufacture to the level of Toyota's first generation, I would applaud them. Until then, I remain unimpressed. They have a hybrid just to say they have hybrid technology. End of story.

Not when it comes to drivability.

“And the miracle is how Ford blends the two. There was no — none, nada, zip — vibration or shimmying in the test car when the gasoline kicked in to help the electric. No other hybrid — NOT EVEN THAT $107,000 Lexus — can make that claim 100% of the time.” –US today

This move is also political. U.S. congress wants GM to produce more fuel efficient cars and with their limited resources and funds, this will make congress more flexible to give them even more money.
Subaru as well will be using the Toyota system.
The Nissan version was only available to Nissan on specific terms. This was the Toyota's first generation with Nissan computer systems and integration. This was a Nissan choice not Toyota's. They agreed.
Subaru will be using Toyota's second generation Hybrid System fully provided by Toyota. This will not be a mismatch like the Nissan product.
Toyota will keep GM and others on their second generation hybrid system so Toyota won't lose market share too badly of the Hybrid market.
GM will most likely not have a stripped-down second generation. To ensure success, they will take the system as Subaru has.
GM cannot afford to make any mistakes re-entering into the market. Funny to even say that GM has to "re-enter" into the market.

I find this to be a total farse. Toyota, as stated above does nothing for free. The NUMMI is platform sharing and cost cutting for Toyota. They make a profit off of the volume (before the fall of GM) of the Vibe. Toyota will share in the profit of the hybrid sales, not a lot but Toyota gets the image up, a view of what is going on at GM's hybrid future. I would politely say thanks but no thanks. The Two mode system, and Voltech is enough to start with as far as I'm concerned with GM. Again, like everyone else this is my opinion. i don't know or even pretend know what is going on internally within these companies.

That doesn't make me like everything someone of my race put out. I love watching Kobe, but he can be a butt head some times. Yes I'm proud but at the same time pragmatic in my views on public policy. Tell me where else in the world can I go to an Ivy League college, get a scholarship and become a designer? Tell Ed Wilburn, Ralph Giles, Oprah Winfre, and all the successful black people out here to go back to Africa where tribes still battle and in some causes destroy complete communities. We have a completely different view of oppression here. I believe we will always have some type of oppressive body in this world. If we were the dominate culture, I think we would oppress. It's human nature. Look all over the world and tell me what culture hasn't oppress or has been oppressed by another.

Yes racist people will live on, an so will oppressors, ( look at the pirates out in the oceans constantly attacking merchant vessels, aren't they oppressing someone) but we can't say this is what is holding us back any longer. We need to broaden our scoop and viewpoint to be successful if not we will remain stagnant and will ultimately die out.

huu76 makes good points, and I don't think because he is white, can't raise these obvious points because they are glaring situations that needs to be addressed (maybe not on this blog but the cat is out the bag). Blacks won't point out these huge omissions for ridiculous reasons. We as blacks can choose a car and will go into the purchase extremely informed and educated about the quality, resale and durability, and will purchase on the premise of said qualifications. When it comes to elected officials, we tend to vote color and not qualifications of equal and this will hurt us and the country in the long run.

It's a smart move and would be best for the industry to standardize on a technology. That would make the costs, maintenance and safety issues better understood.

Toyota uses a lot of GM standards already. GM would benefit and should ask Toyota to make a Chevy Corolla at NUMMI again. They used to make those in the 80's.

First of all, Huu76 is right about the Messiah - he's a hypocrite and no different than G W Bush (and I hated Bush). He wouldn't survive one minute without his teleprompter. This is the first marketing driven presidency. It looks good, but when you get down to the substance there's not much substance. When he came out and said he was going to close Guantanamo he hadn't thought about what to do with the really bad terrorists. In his latest presentation to Congress on the matter, he still didn't have details. Hillary was right about this guy. He's great smiling at the camera and hamming it up with regular people, playing the Big Brotha, but I don't think he spends the time to learn the details and think through his decisions. Shall I call him LAZY???

As for the Lexus, this Hybrid is FUGLY with a capital F. But it is loaded with technological features so it will be hard for people not to consider it.

Would you get a loan for 3 times your ability to pay back, and know possibly your job might be in jeopardy?($3 Trillion debt above the 1/2 Trillion Bush left) Would you make a promise to your children or family and after you decided to check out the situation, have to go back on you word, but you should have taken the time to do just diligence in seeing if what you said could really be done? (Closing Gettmo. Why?) Most of the things Obama had said before the election hasn't happened. The left is pissed and become more and more disenchanted with him.
