The most beautiful Audi in history officially a go

AND, it could be one of the most beautiful cars of all time in the Spies opinion...

It is now official: the new Audi sports car will be called the Audi R8. Presented as the “Le Mans quattro” concept study two years ago at the IAA Frankfurt Motor Show, Audi has now taken the decision to build its new sports car. Everything is already being prepared for the series production of the R8 at Audi’s plant in Neckarsulm, due to commence in the fourth quarter of 2006. The market launch is scheduled for the second quarter of 2007.

28 million euros are being invested in the R8 production line. The Audi subsidiary quattro GmbH will be responsible for production. Development and test construction at quattro GmbH and technical development at AUDI AG are currently in full swing. 250 employees will work on the production of the R8.

“Through the R8 we are looking to build on our successes in motorsport and carry them over to series production. This model represents Audi’s very own interpretation of sportiness,” says Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of AUDI AG, about the new member of the Audi model range.

Audi is relying on intelligent lightweight design for its R8, a core area of expertise in Neckarsulm. The Audi A2, A6 and A8 were all developed at the Aluminium Centre there using lightweight design technology.

No official word yet on the whether or not the car will come to the US or when, however the outlook is very good. We will probably see two engines offered in this car; the biturbo V8 will be first, possibly followed a year later by a V10 version. The all-aluminium chassis is supposed to weigh in at only 3300 lbs. This should be a very fast car with numbers rivaling that of the 911 Turbo and Aston Martin AMV8. It will be priced very close to both of those cars. The V10 version (if produced) will compete more directly with the exotica of Ferrari and Lamborghini, possibly even the Carrera GT and priced above $150K.

someone here should be called 'chump change'... given their lack of car history knowledge ... Audi has been around since the early days of the Gran Prix winning championships as the Auto Union, in the 80's it DOMINATED Rally racing, in the mid 80's it dominated Touring Car Racing Worldwide. In most recent times, everyone knows it's undeniable dominance in Le Mans and ALMS.

So, "Chump Change", go learn to read first and then go at it with a history book, maybe you'll learn something about car history.

Bring on the R8!

audi/vw a winner? cmon! put it this way, ever play basketball with inferior competition? audi/vw has NO credibility when competing in LeMans or lesser racing series especially when they're a works team vs. minnow-privateer teams like panoz, etc.

FORMULA 1: its the auto manufacturer era people. the only makes NOT in F1: GM & VW, ironically the 2 largest in the world. what's the matter audi boys? afraid to compete with true racing heritage in the likes of Honda, Toyota, BMW, Fiat, MercBenzo, Renault.

audi: stop beating up on privateer teams and step up where the REAL action is... F1. (the only reason the audi r8 dominates is that its a works car competing with boy racer teams)
