20 GM Cars Get 30MPG Hwy Or More. Only One Problem-12 Are Saturns or Pontiacs
You've seen the ads.
20 GM cars get at least 30MPG highway so we're doing great with our mileage strategy, right?
There is only one problem.
12 are Saturn's and Pontiac's and we all know the fate of those cars.
So in the new GM, only EIGHT cars do 30MPG or better.
Seems like it's just one problem compounding into more problems.
Toyota and Honda have to be licking their chops.

Most of these cars are different versions of the same cars, with GM having gone with the quantity over quality approach to marketing itself.

Not really a problem. Those 12 cars are going to be eliminated from the "new GM" product offerings. And having 8 b/t Chevy & Buick may be a great start.

I think they are going to start calling each color of vehicle a diffferent vehicle so that they can increase their number of vehicles getting over 30 MPG. The only important figure for MPGs and car manufacturers is the average of all vehicles sold.

Chevy Cobalt XFE at 37 mpg highway.
The lineup for Chevrolet includes the Aveo sedan, Aveo5 (34 mpg with automatic or manual); Cobalt coupe and sedan (30 mpg for SS Turbocharged; 33 mpg for 2.2L automatic); Cobalt XFE (37); Malibu 2.4L (30 mpg with four-speed automatic; 33 mpg with six-speed); Malibu Hybrid (34), HHR (30 mpg with 2.2L and automatic or manual); and HHR Panel (30 mpg with 2.2L and automatic or manual).
Chevy Camaro the 304-horsepower direct-injected 3.6-liter V6 engine that's standard in the LT and LS models will achieve 29 miles per gallon on the highway and 18 mpg in the city with the six-speed automatic, or 17 mpg with the six-speed stick.
New Models:
New Model line replacing Pontiac and Saturn Product
The Orlando/ Chevy Cruze compact car, which debuts next year in the U.S. version will receive the same 1.4-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine in the European Cruze models. Chevy says that engine will deliver better fuel economy than its current Cobalt, which gets 37 mpg on the highway.
The EPA is still finishing up its evaluation of the Equinox, but Chevy spokesman Brian Goebel sent out a note this morning that the latest internal tests at GM are showing the Equinox hitting 32 mpg on the highway cycle. In the city, the Equinox is expected to get rated at 22 mpg. Those numbers easily top competitors like the Honda CR-V at 20/27 city/highway mpg and the Toyota RAV4 at 22/28 mpg. The Equinox should be in dealer showrooms in June.
GMC Terrain new 2.4-litre, four-cylinder 16-valve DOHC engine (182 horsepower / 136 kW, pending SAE certification) to consume in the front-wheel drive 2010 Terrain (highway) 7.8 litre/100 km (equivalent to 12.75 km per litre, 30 US mpg or 36 UK mpg - see 2010 specifications page for more details).
The Chevy Volt. We will see.

I actually really like the new Equinox/Terrain coming out. So much so that I may go take a look at the GMC Terrain.

Future models within 12-24 months
With GM emerging from bankruptcy with little holding it back, it's no question the company will invest resources into a consentrated effort to get back on top. More that likely, GM will spread Voltech line throughout the company much like the 2-Mode Hybrid system. Look for models to come fast and hard being it isn't the huge monoith it was before.
Info from GM Inside News
First, of course, a 2011 on-sale date for the Converj is a target date, and it's an ambitious one at that. While the Voltec architecture is exclusive, there's a lot of GM's compact Delta architecture in it. A '12 Converj would need all-new sheetmetal and interior, and that's possible given the advanced status of Voltec development. The drivetrain would be similar to the lithium-ion battery pack and 1.4L four-cylinder engine to be used in the Chevy Volt, although GM is likely to add battery mass to make the Cadillac a more powerful car.
Saturn now defunct Vue Two-Mode System was able to do 0-60 mph in 7.3 seconds and return 27 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway with its combination direct-injection V6 and twin 55-kilowatt electric motors. It's fair to assume the Cadillac SRX would perform similarly. For comparison, Cadillac estimates that a conventional front-wheel-drive SRX powered by the 3.0-liter direct-injection V6 should return 18/25 mpg, city/highway.
Cadillac officials confirmed the SRX crossover, eventually be fitted with the two-mode electric hybrid system.
No word on timing for the two-mode SRX but we wouldn't expect it before the 2011 model year. A few main competitors either already offer a hybrid crossover in roughly the same size and price class (Lexus) or plan to within the next couple of years (Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen).

This just in, in the states there is only 1 audi with over 30mpg, 2 benz (including the smart car), 0 porsche... vw is on the right track with few cars as well as the mini division of bmw. The German car market is going to die if they don't play catch up.

If the Germans don't wake up, then the world will began to stop giving them a free pass just because they make highly desirable vehicles. There will be a break point, much like the big three and their panache for everything V8. At the same time, stateside, most want diesel models and I think thats a shame. This could easily be the answer for German makes. An awareness is beginning to take shape, but I wouldn't put all eggs in one basket.

Sorry, most "don't" want diesel models is what I meant to say.

I don't think you guys realized that GM is merely using all the technology developed by its German brand Opel, basically just re branding Opel's products serving them up as newly developed GM cars. For instance the Equinox/Terrain that is supposed to be a brand new car is the Opel Antara, also called Chevrolet Captiva, which has been in production since 2006. The Germans are not sleeping. Its just that they do not offer their fuel efficient smaller petrol engines, or their clean and powerful diesel engines in the US (eg the BMW 535d).

If Opel was netting GM more profit then they were sucking up, the last thing on GM's to do list would be selling them off.

You would have to really look into the company to see what vehicles have the best gas mileage. The title is misleading on making you think the GM only has 20 separate models. GM is to blame as well because they badged engineered a number of models to inflate what is offered.

humorme while Opel is German, GM is the parent company as of this post. BMW, Mercedes, Audi and the like is what we are mostly referring to. The U.S. consumer is so backwards in the way we think. Point being, we say we like Euro design and their lifestyle, but shun diesel powered vehicles. Maybe due to early experiences with diesels here is why, but times change. It is common to see diesel (up to 75% models are sold with diesel engines).

G6/Aura = Malibu
G5 = Cobalt (soon to be replaced by Cruze)
G3 = Aveo
Vue/Torrent = all new Equinox and SRX coming very soon
Outlook = Acadia/Traverse/Enclave
In other words, except for the G8, what exactly are we really losing?

too bad the chevy cars that get 30 mpg arent the cars that the people WANT
and to those saying the German car companies need to play "catch-up" the last time i checked none of them have lost billions of dollars like toyota, chevy, ford, chrysler etc and none of them are filing for bankruptcy or anywhere close to doing so

True, but you can't compete in North America if legislation prevents your cars from being sold. Which is why the diesel fad still hasn't taken off in N.A. (emissions legislations).

GM is selling a brand that does pretty good among the best sellers of the European market. I believe that several of the Opel models could do great in the US market, and I believe it would be better off keeping the Opel brand name instead of presenting it as a rebranded Pontiac, Saturn or Buick. GM management is either blind or utterly stupid!!!
