Is Now The Best Time To Buy A GM Car?

GM's woes can be your gain if you're in the market for a new car. The bankruptcy filing by the giant automaker could boost your bargaining power with a dealer.

"It gives the consumer more leverage," said Philip Reed, senior consumer advice editor at Edmunds.com. "That leverage is an attitude of, 'I am unsure if I want to buy a car from a manufacturer that has just gone into bankruptcy.' "

A 'tude' like that could get a dealer to lower the price on a car, especially because many people feel it for real.

Best time? It's never a good time to buy a GM car.

They deserve this outcome. After scrapping the EV1 and they could have been years ahead of Toyota for mass production, they deserve this. To disban the EV1 to buy Hummer was rediculous. That is like saying no to the cute next-door neighbor to date a stripper and years later, you are dying of aids.

Toyota did the same with the 1997-2003 RAV4 EV and the Sequoia respectively.

Dont forget, all manufacturers had to drop electric vehicles. The NIHM batteries "owned by GM" was sold to Texaco. All manufacturers didn't have a choice BUT to scrap their electric vehicles.
So to comment about your Toyota Rav4 statement, it is still GM's fault.

Yes, but I would have to take a journey to find a (corvette) dealer now.

If Price is your main consideration...find a Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealer that is going out of Business...if you can find one(most had a June 1st cutoff for sales)

Otherwise...It's not a good time to buy ANYTHING...except Gold and Silver.

It all sounds good, but the dealers aren't dealing!

With sales down, the dealers are all trying to make up sales revenue by charging list or near list prices. They think that super dealing will damage the brand image and permanently set too low of a pricing expectation.

I am seriously considering buying myself either new a Pontiac G8 GXP when the prices plummet or a slightly used one when resale hits rock bottom. I can pretty much mod the daylights out of it and make myself a killer daily driver/grocery getter and weekend 1/4 mile racer. SLP Supercharger = over 550 hp. Sold!!!!!!

I almost bought a GXP this weekend.. grab one by you can. The deal breaker was the size and the fact that I drove an M3. I drove a bunch of cars and even preferred it over the IS-F and the Cayenne GTS!

I have been giving it serious consideration. The wife thinks I will hate it since I just turned in my 745, which was pure luxury, but if I can get a decent amount off of MSRP or a killer deal on a used one, i'll drive it to work every day and laugh all the way to the bank with the money i'd save. It would be cheaper than any car i've bought in over a decade. I test drove a GXP a while back, not serious at the time and was very impressed. It was way faster than my 7 series, handled better and the leather interior was actually quite decent for the price of the car.

From all of the reviews I read I was expecting grim but was pleasantly surprised. A base 2006 911 I drove had an interior that was not much better. If you need the extra room and don't care about the badge out front, it's a no brainer. It may actually have more real leg room than your 7! I just know that after 1 year I'd regret that I didn't get the M3.

Ask to see the dealer's invoice. Then ask to see the manufacturer's rebates and offer them that price. You'll get it. They want them gone. Best way to buy a GM today. You call the shots, not the dealer.

the dealer discounts kind of blow considering the shape they're in. my friend's been desperate to buy a jeep ad now one will come down more than 7-8k (been that way since dec) on 35+ jeeps @ dealerships that are closing! no wonder they're going under.
