Edmund Inside Line Drives: 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i Full Test and Video
There's this guy at work (let's call him Dan) who never warmed up to BMW's Z3 and Z4 roadsters. Something about them simply didn't ring true.

"The original Z3 seemed like a reactionary car," says Dan, "a concept BMW didn't really believe in themselves. But everyone had to respond after the Mazda Miata reinvigorated the demand for small two-seat sports cars."

And the result seemed like an über-Miata, too — except the super-suit didn't fit well.

BMW must have felt the same way, because the redesigned car received significant changes and a new name: Z4. Attempts to tailor the suit included a wheelbase stretched by nearly 2 inches, a stiffer chassis and a much improved rear suspension.

But the magic still wasn't there and the Bangle-administration styling was polarizing, if not confrontational. Doubters like Dan remained unconvinced.

"I remained unconvinced," says Dan.

So the recent arrival of the new 2009 BMW Z4 sDrive35i roadster at our offices was met with considerable suspicion. Some approached it carrying a grudge, in fact, because its new power-retractable hardtop signals the end of dedicated fixed-roof versions like the M coupe, considered by some to be the best thing about previous Z roadsters.

This is a stunning car. Period. (.) Stunningly beautiful.

That said, as good as the new Z4 is, no way in hell BMW can justify, even if we can afford it, the price increase over the so-ran model it replaced. A close friend traded in his Subie WRX Limited for the previous Z4 because they were giving it away, seriously. Lease was cheaper than dirt and no wonder. I do realize this model is a convertible hard top and has tech to boot, but still it doesn't make sense. True enough MB SLK and Audi TT comes in around that price, but wow that is a large leap. Hey it might be justified once the car is driven, never know. Will have to wait. Might be better than sex...

naahhhhhhh.

Great car, too damn expensive. Loaded 35i model is $70,000 and that's just ridiculous.

why? It's no more than a comparable Boxster S or SLK350. Or is every car in the class overpriced?

"Initial understeer".... See?

You got to adjust anti-roll bar setting to make it more neutral, but then you're running high risk of void warranty, which, could cost you a lot considering Bimmer's reliability......

See, with this new Z4 which is bigger and much heavier, I think BMW is aiming at a different crowd. But there should be an old Z4 replacement soon.. perhaps the Z2.

They Said ??

Are you STUPID ?

That is Gallardo and F 430 territory and those are even faster than 997 Turbo

So how could a stock Boxter S achieve those times ?

FYI official Boxter S and Cayman S 0-100kmh (0-62mph) times are 5.3 and 5.2 secs respectively.

I think Porsche would know better than "Motor Trend" What Performance their vehicles can achieve.

Walter Rohl and some other Porsche Test Driver or "Motor Trend Driver" ?

Hmm!! I know which one ill take.

And the TT- RS with 0-100kmh of 4.6s is faster than both the Boxter S and Cayman S.
