2010 Subaru Legacy gets EPA rated 31 mpg on the highway
Subaru announced today that the EPA has officially rated the 2010 Subaru Legacy at 26 mpg combined and 31 mpg highway, despite the fact that the car has grown in size in almost every dimension.

“Specifically, the Legacy 2.5i CVT now exhibits better fuel economy (EPA combined) than such Front-Wheel competitors such as Honda Accord, Mazda6i, VW Passat and Hyundai Sonata” Subaru said in a statement. “Furthermore, the new Legacy is now the highest rated midsize AWD sedan (EPA combined) in the U.S....

Yay for Subbie! Now get rid of the Donut's and bring back real spare tires with wheels, I will pay...I don't care!

My 2005 Neon gets 27/32 with a spare and runs great. Has @50K with no problems pretty good for an 18K cracker box. My neighbor has one with 230K and still clippen.

How many people actually acquire a CVT though?

The 2.5i 6MT variant will only net you 19 MPG

You are comparing the 6mt's city mileage to the CVT's highway mileage. WTF?
Furthermore, most people will buy the 2.5i with the CVT. People her would prefer the 2.5GT w/6mt.

Well, really most people will acquire the 2.5 AWD.

That's my point.

Great news! So if I ever get stuck driving one, I won't have to fill up that often, thus avoiding people approaching me at the pump to tell me how the car is hideous compared to the handsome last generation Legacy!

the 5 series and accord pulled the look off much better. seems like toyota had a hand in the design.

That is awesome! Fuel economy of Subaru has always suffered partly because of AWD, and now it is better than the others. I'm just concerned as always about a CVT's long term reliability. Good job, Subaru.

They obviously really tried to program the CVT for the EPA test as the giant difference between manual and auto indicates. Could possibly one of the cars that is difficult to get EPA mpg in the real world.
