001 Takes YOU To The SHO- Will American's Pay $37K For A Taurus?
001 spent the day driving, testing and photographing the upcoming 2010 Ford Taurus SHO.
I like the car (actually have one for the weekend to test) and I have been reading lots of positive comments on our site.
But the one thing that keeps going through my mind is will Americans pay $37k for a Taurus?
The car has lots of value for the money (see chart comparisons) but in this market, will it sell?
We can't giving you our driving impressions of the car until June 22nd due to a Ford imposed Press Embargo.
But we CAN show you the best

Here are just a few highlights from our shoot today...be sure to view the entire gallery at your leisure.

Of course. What car give you the performance, tech and value at that price? The SHO won't be sold in large volumes, so at lease you won't see yourself going and coming. Vehicles in the same price point. (Do they have the same features?)
Acura TSX $37,000
Acura TL $38,000
Chrysler 300 $39,000
Hyundai Genesis $37,000
Pontiac G8 $37,000
VW CC $38,000

I think a lot of people find it hard to admit that technically Ford has done an excellent job (0-60 times come from Edmunds Insideline crosssected with manufacturers' estimate).
BMW 535ix xDrive: EPA 17city/25hwy 0-60 in some 5.5 sec
Lexus GS350 AWD: EPA 18city/25hwy 0-60 in some 5.8 sec
Audi A6 3.0T quattro: EPA 18city/26hwy 0-60 in some 5.8 sec
Ford Taurus SHO EcoBoost: EPA 17city/25hwy 0-60 in some 5.8 sec
Edmunds real life observed:
BMW 535i: 22.5 mpg
Lexus GS350: 22.9 mpg
Audi A6 3.0T quattro: 16.3 mpg
Ford Taurus SHO: yet to be estimated
As you can see, the Taurus plays with the best. BMW twinturbo direct-injected R6 and Lexus twin-injected are the best engines in their class, having collected numerous awards. And yet EcoBoost is on par with them.
Then take into account the Taurus size. It's longer than all the flagships: Lexus LS, Mercedes S, new BMW 7, Audi A8 (although its wheelbase is significantly shorter).
Some complaints are about Taurus handling...
"Handling Comments: (Skid pad) Chassis is slow to respond to steering input -- not at the sidewall level, but due to body motions. Understeers with maintenance throttle and lifting to get rotation awakens stability control. (Slalom) To keep from arriving late at each cone, I had to dial the speed down. Friction-free steering with mild load-up. Just as understeer begins, stability control starts grabbing brake, then throttle dips. Would be nice to turn off stability control, but you can't do that unless you get the optional performance package. That same package also adds better tires which would likely improve results."
Source: http://blogs.edmunds.com/straightline/2009/06/il-track-tested-2010-ford-taurus-sho-vs-pontiac-g8-gt.html
...but considering the car size it's not really that much of an issue.

what I'm saying is it's not eco-friendly. It may have a lot of power but majority of customers who are shopping for an eco-friendly, fuel saving car wouldn't be looking for something with this much power and such poor mpg. That's just highway, what do you think the city numbers are?

It's a good point: 17/25 is not exactly stellar gas mileage, or at least anything to write home about. My old Lexus LS430, with a big-ol V8, is rated at 18/25. It's marginally better than other US manufacturers' [poor] offerings, but at 4300+ lbs, it doesn't have a hp/weight much better (if at all) than other offerings, and the mpg is not a significant improvement. It's not a bad car, I just don't see anything really that compelling.

The SHO isn't trying to be eco friendly. Get a Prius. This car is about performance, period. It just so happens to use a high output V-6 to do the job. Apples and Oranges. A sample of cars below show much lower performance with marginally different mpg. I would say the Eco Boost is far more superior in performance and output to petrol ratio than the engines below. Lexus LS600h didn't pretend to go after eco friendly Prius buyers. It focus on the novelty of the vehicle plus it didn't really make a major difference in savings compared to a std V8. The SHO MPG/output compared to:
GS 450 22/25 @ 340 HP, BMW 550i 15/18 @360 HP, MB E 550 15/26 @382 HP, Acura TL 16/22 @ 300HP
Accord V6 21/30 @ 244 HP
Fusion V6 19/27 @ 221 HP
Sonata V6 19/29 @ 265 HP
ES350 V6 19/27 @ 268 HP

this car is "relativley" eco friendly for cars that have over 350HP. Ford could just have easily made a 4 cylinder eco-boost and gave it 220 hp and got 35mpg highway.

One thing is for sure - the car is huge! I believe it's even longer in overall length than the Lexus LS 460 and 600h L, the long wheelbase models.
I don't know why it took me so long to notice that the new Taurus was based on the Interceptor Concept, which I had once thought to be a cool looking truck.
I like this car; I'd take it over a 528i and E320. There's a chance that those three vehicles will be in the same comparison for future executive car buyers.

If the 0-60 on the 365hp Taurus SHO is 5.8 sec, that is a little disapointing...
It's interesting that Ford compared it to the Audi A6 4.2 and not the new 3.0T. the 3.0T is quicker than the V8 and also has better mileage and better mileage than the SHO.

The engine specs is where the comparison to Audi ends. They have 2 entirely different AWD systems. It's no wonder the Audi is quicker.
You can't really characterize a car by 0-60 times. Look at the Chevy Cobalt SS Turbo. It's not exactly setting any 0-60mph records but, someone was able to push it to an 8:22 Nring time.

Given the performance, style of this vehicle. I think people would buy it at 37K. For those who want the style minus the turbo will buy the lower trims and pay less. Good job Ford! And this is coming from someone who thought I would never praise a domestic make. The Fusion and now the Taurus shows Ford is heading in a good direction. IF these cars show they are reliable then I could be swayed.

I agree.....krautN1nja.....I would do a RWD any day over a FWD. FWD is for the people with no driving experience and they want to feel safe and drive better in the snow and all that good stuff.
RWD you get a much better performing car from turning radius, better cornering, better response time in emergency situations but again RWD is not made for everybody so stick with what you know. For someone to say that RWD is not made for the snow is a bunch of crap because up in NY i always see a mercedes or a BMW fly by me on the highway in the rain or snow and when it rains or snowsI see a lot of accidents with FWD cars than RWD cars
Now to stick to the article 37 grand for this car is about right. I think people who have been waiting for this car to SHO its face again will be willing to finance that with no problem. I would love to test drive one i think it is the right price

But anywho in reference to this car. Would people pay 37 k for a souped up taurus? YES! would i personally...not a chance. The specs are great and if this is anything like the past SHO, than it will live up to compete with like minded cars. Just at this price point i personally am lookin for a totally different kinda car im lookin for refinement and somethin i can stomach sitting in as an everday driver, and tho ford has come along way, their interiors leave something to be desired , and though i'll have to wait to drive one myself to pass real judgement, from almost EVERY review i have read these things are powerful indeed but handle like a boat

It was all management's fault. UAW1...There is no mention of politics you fool. My brother worked for Ford Motor Company for 32 years so I think I know a little about some of the Ford product line. Read your own comments again in previous blogs; you'll see your comments are always skewed toward anti-management or how your union clowns always built a great car. You're such a wind bag, you don't even remember half the bull crap you blog about. I never said anything negative about the Taurus being a bad car, but just that people may be leary because of past experiences. But I forgot those previous Pontiac Aztecs, Chrysler Sebring and the rest of those body cladding vehicles you built should make us all excited about purchasing another domestic car.

We the people who know about resale value, just think that way.
American brands =/= resale value
If Ford decided to start building good cars since yesterday, I'll give them 50 years until they build up enough reputation before I get one.
Meanwhile, there much better cars than a SHO.
You could just say whatever you want about this car. Nevertheless, I already know it won't sell not even as they predict it would. Never.
