Toyota Patriarch Says: Toyota Emulating GM Failures

Shoichiro "scolded" the president for being so anxious to boost sales and profits that he’d let Toyota emulate now bankrupt General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC.

Toyota had become addicted to big, expensive cars and trucks and had forgotten the customers’ need to save money, Shoichiro said, according to the person’s account.

On a mild day in February, Toyota Motor Corp.’s honorary chairman, Shoichiro Toyoda, summoned 400 executives to the redbrick factory in Nagoya, Japan, where his grandfather had built weaving looms a century ago.

The managers filed in for one of the customary updates from Toyota’s gray-haired, 84-year-old patriarch. What they got was anything but ordinary.

Two months earlier, Toyota had forecast its first operating loss since Shoichiro’s father began making cars in the same factory, now turned museum, in 1937. Then in January, about three months earlier than planned, the company announced that Shoichiro’s son, Akio, would replace Katsuaki Watanabe as president. Akio is scheduled to assume his new job at a shareholder meeting Tuesday in Toyota City.

I hope that Shoichiro shames those execs and fires a few dozen.
Toyota has lost its quality control and is focusing more on market share than they are the quality of their cars that got them to where they are today.
Toyota cars today are crap. Don't dismiss what I say. I work for Toyota and see the quality of their work daily and it is utter crap. Door seams don't remain true and bond welding is sloppy and is visible from the wheel wells.
Squeeks and rattles are being reported that they never had before. Initial problems from new car delivery has increased dramatically.
TOYOTA IS THE NEW GM !!! Lots of production with a strong following that will result in their demise unless it is rectified. Hyundais are better manufactured with less problems reported.
Why is it that Lexus, the same bloody company, can have such great ownership reviews and Toyota be such a cluster-f@*!!.
Going back to my initial comment, I hope that Toyoda kicks some ass and does something.

I think if Toyota seize the moment and get back to basics, then it shouldn't be long before a turn around will happen.

Yea GM can have up to 4 different bodykits for one car. The sad thing is that even with 4 different brands selling it you would think that they could fix the problems.

First of all inspirion7 is a known Toyota hater. I've read some of his negative blogs concerning Toy/Lex recently this site is just another venue for a few of these losers.

lexworld, I have no idea who you are, or for the most part could care less about you and I believe I speak for a number of individuals that believe you are an idiot or an adolescent or both.

But to clear the air, I haven't liked the direction Toyota has taken and more so, how ignorantly blind most followers will believe anything this company spews out as gospel. I don't hate Toyota and some of the policies of the past 5 years and the above article is why. Hates should be a very reserved word tossed around here like candy. It would take a lot for me to say that word. Hatred is a murder and to say that is very offensive. So this is why I believe lexworld is immature because this person doesn't grasp the gravity of making such statements.

Who in their right mind would be employed be a giant like Toyota and get on here and bash their company in times like these. Even if you do work their I'am pretty sure you're on the verdge of getting fired for behavioral problems, bad or negative attitude or just plain old insubordination.

Lexworld,

When the most exciting car in Toyota's lineup is the Matrix then something is wrong. I guess their current problems is a relection of that.

Actually, you stand corrected, the most exciting car in Toyota's lineup is the Yaris TS. No, really that car does look good, if you like a sedan that tiny, and with 132 HP, it should perform good.
With the return of Toyoda to the head of the company, we will see new performance models with eco-status intact.

Correct me if am am wrong. But didn't I tell everyone about this at least 6 months ago? They basically copied everyone else game plan so well they fell victim to the same weaknesses.

It is easy to copy your way into the market and since they arguably have a better product dominate as well. But when you copy the same flawed strategy you are subject to the same miscalculations.

Agent 009 Ray Charles told Steve Wonder this was coming. It was obvious this was going to happen. Didn't need the voodo science to read the tea leaves...

I am not a fan of Toyota, I used to be a fan and I still like some of the old ones, Why would this Toyota exec be mad all of a sudden? they have dropped in quality for a while. With auto companies getting more competitive the quality of all brands are improving.

inspirion7- Obviously you saw it too. So did Toyota leadership fall victim to the Lemmings approach of management? It didn't take rocket science to see it back then either.

After all look at their sales mix before the gas crisis and you would see the ratios on gas guzzlers. The hybrids all though widespread simply did not have the mileage required to combat the new requirements. Actually Honda was best positioned of the big Japanese makers.

The Toyota manager who suggested that the Prius should be sold at a loss should be fired. Toyota's idea of moving the speedometer to the center of the dash, to save $200 a year, per car, in production costs, is a step in the right direction. Toyota says it has the goal of selling all small cars at a profit. But Toyota fell for the poor idea of selling large vehicles, at a higher price, than the cost of producing the large vehicle. That operating model, which uses profits from selling larger vehicles, to reduce the cost of smaller cars to less than production costs, will not work in a down economy when combined with rising fuel prices.

I think that Toyota needs to sell less models, close plants that produce over powered fuel wasting models. Toyota should close large engine production lines. Toyota should keep in production the models that will pass the new US Federal law about future fleet sales fuel economy. Toyota needs to offer only one motor for each vehicle design sold. That would enable Yoyota to improve aerodynamics in new vehicle designs. One motor would aid in reducing weight. Those ideas, combined with the center top of dash speedometer, which would improve fleet fuel economy, while reducing production costs.
