For Mercedes R Class, space is the final frontier

The operative word for Mercedes Benz's new R Class is "space." It's big, so it takes up a lot of space. Inside, it has a lot of space. And if you buy one, you're going to have a lot of empty space in your pocketbook.



The space theme carries over to the look - this Mercedes looks like it just landed from outer space. It's a visually exciting, low-slung automobile that, based on the approving stares I got, is quite the eye catcher. A double-paned sunroof that extends the length of the car adds to the spaceship-like experience.

On the road, it acts like a spaceship, with an exceptionally quiet ride that one may expect on the Starship Enterprise. Warp drive is a bit of an issue - it seems a little sluggish when you first get under way, perhaps because, at almost 5,000 pounds, it's no lightweight.

MB may have had a better chance with the concept rather than this compromise in design.

... and NO MB, the car I Want or Need to Drive is Still NOT your R-Class MINIVAN!

I feel sorry for those that have purchased one. The R-Class is one of the UGLIEST vehicles in recent history!!! Be honest about it.

The R is new, but shortly behind it will be the new G replacement, which will be more like an extended M. It will be superior to the M in its capabilities, AND should be coming with a genuine third row seat (not the mickey mouse flip flop things of the past)due to its long wheelbase. I believe that Mercedes' own M will compete with their own R, and the M will win. It is the likely solution to the question you posed, and the vehicle will not have the look of a minivan, but instead a serious suv, which is certainly preferable. BTW, it will eventually be offered with a diesel engine as well.
