Agent009 Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is And Adds A Car To The Stable, Will He Win Or Lose?

Agent009 Puts His Money Where His Mouth Is And Adds A Car To The Stable, Will He Win Or Lose?
It may come as no secret to many of you that I move to the beat of a different drummer.
So does it surprise you that when it came time to add another car to the stable that I would avoid conventional wisdom and take the opposite route?

In this case my wife’s leased daily driver was ready to retire after an entirely trouble free run of service.  And we were in the market for another vehicle.

Since her daily demands of hauling cargo, car pooling, and shopping dictates the requirement of mid sized SUV, we started scanning the market.  And scan that market we did.  We looked at primarily at the upscale vehicles concentrating on the Acura MDX, Lexus’ RX350 (I know, I will catch hell for that one), BMW’s X5, and the Mercedes ML350.

Honestly all of these SUV’s are excellent in their own right and run in similar price points.  But the since needs of my wife are far different than my own, she would make the ultimate decision when it came to ruling out choices.

The first to go was the MDX.  The styling was the downfall here, (specifically that huge front beak) and was something she didn’t feel comfortable with the dealer.  But we both agreed the interior was right on the mark.

The RX350 was the next to go.  In this case the interior actually was the deciding factor.  While sleek and sexy, it simply didn’t add up to an upgrade from what she had.  I’m not knocking the RX, and it was well appointed, but there was not a definitive stand out that made you want the RX over a lesser Highlander. Combine that to our history with two prior Lexus models and their leather durability, and that was all it took to axe the RX.

The X5 was the last to go, though the comprehensive service and repair warranty made it very attractive.  While I enjoyed the excellent response and handling of the BMW, my wife determined the firm ride was a bit excessive.  The end result was that everyone we knew had an X5 and she didn’t want to be just like them.

So we ended up settling on a ML350.  With impeccable road manners and a cabin that looked and felt the part of a luxury SUV, she felt this was the best choice for her.

So now comes the 009 twist on things:

Since this vehicle was also used for business we typically structure a lease to maximize the tax benefits.  But with the increased reliability of all brands becoming more of an academic measure than a real world indication of a roadside failure.  The question then arose “what about a low mileage pre-owned vehicle?”  After all why pay for the drastic depreciation that all of these models experience?  Why not let that original owner pay that depreciation off and we can then experience the benefits of ownership at a greatly reduced cost?  I typically drive my cars to the well beyond the century mark without major issues so this should be very similar.
After crunching the numbers we discovered it actually worked out if the vehicle met certain criteria.  The deciding factor would be any loose issues could be tied up with the remaining warranty on the vehicle.  This meant the vehicle still had to have several months of warranty available.

This all sounds fine, until you realize that the used car market is pretty strong and that auction prices on used vehicles coming off lease are almost the same as street value.  So out into the world of the internet we went to help find the perfect example.  While we found many potential choices out there, one surfaced rather quickly and we focused our efforts.   The candidate in question turned out to be a 2006 ML350 with over one year of warranty left and an amazing 14,000 miles on the odometer.  Upon inspection the car was basically new in all aspects, the service record was intact, the title was clear, and the Carfax report came back clean. We had a winner.

The best part of this deal was that the original window sticker was available and the current price was over $23,000 less than the original MSRP, and over $35,000 less than a similarly equipped same generation new model on the showroom floor.  With only 14,000 miles on the odometer this vehicle was available for less then even a decked out new Honda Civic.

So the great experiment is on.  Will this purchase be the best of both worlds? Or will it be something to be regretted down the road.  If past history is any indication with proper maintenance it will be the best choice.

The modern suv is a minivan. Re-categorized to ditch the negative image.

We do go camping quite a bit as my son is a scout. We needs ground clearance. Plus not too many choices in the minivan arena we would consider.

It isn't all about a magazine review. It is about personal needs and preferences. It is easy to let a magazine pick the choices for you, but their choice isn't always your choice.

The real item of note is that the final decision was based on what Agent009's wife preferred. In a lot of cases, selecting a pre-owned vehicle (off-lease) is really a great choice. And considering that he and his wife had a few other SUVs on their list was good. They weighed the highs and lows based on their personal preferences.

dumpsty- That is the point entirely. As we all know I am not a Lexus fan, however it was on our list due to the fact it is a solid contender. Both Infiniti and Audi were never on her list due to the styling not suiting her taste.

My taste would have been at the other end of the spectrum, but she is the one living with the car on a daily basis so it makes sense to address her needs.

In the end it was all about personal choice not brand loyalty that made the ML350 a home.

Will her next choice be a Mercedes? I doubt it, but it never hurts to sample the fruit of another maker from time to time.

009, why would you ever buy a used car? You have no idea who used it before and how well/poorly they treated the vehicle. Plus the deals on new cars right now couldn't get much better.

On a sidenote, my parents have an '05 ML350. I have borrowed it several times and I think it is a great SUV. The X5 3.0 is a little too slow.

I'm guessing he bought it from a Mercedes dealership and not a Maroone's or JD BuyRider. If that's the case it's probably a CPO where they have the entire history of the vehicle and possibly the previous owner, and have inspected it from head to toe. I'd never even consider a used luxury vehicle that wasn't certified.

good question. The car has so few miles that it had only gone through the first oil change. Now I did change the oil again, once I got it to establish a baseline for future changes. When looking over the car it was pretty obvious is was rarely in the elements and it was serviced at the dealer at the prescribed times. So the risk of abuse was minimal.

Nothing wrong at all with the ML. While it may not be automotive equivalent of the latest IPhone, it is a Mercedes Benz. And there is something to that that just feels right. It's like a high quality tool in your box.

Why do you think this vehicle has such horrendous resale value? (you brag about the great deal ,but did you stop to think why is it so cheap?) Long term preventative maintenance along with numerous breakdowns will more than make up the price difference not to mention the amount of aggravation. The MDX is faster more fuel efficient, more cubic ft. of cargo room and it has a better safety rating, oh but that's right, it doesn't have the 3 pt. star...

The resale hurts because whoever wants to buy a Mercedes usually can afford to buy brand new and will buy new.

The Acura and even Lexus prices averaged even cheaper overall. But this is typical of the used car market in general. The depreciation on any new car is staggering.

I no longer look to buy a new vehicle. It does delay the "got to have it" factor though. We are on our second BMW 5 series, the first was a e34 (now w/258k) and now a e39 (now w/120k). I cannot give the kind of money for a new car that is required now days. We drive our cars way to much to take that kind of depreciation. Now I am looking for a 335i 6spd sedan (used around $30k to $35k) vs (new $50k+). Getting a car w/30-40k mi. it is just getting broken in.

There are numerous advantages to buying a used vehicle. IMHO, it is best to let someone else pay all of that depreciation for you. Modern cars are so reliable that you seldom have issues if you chose correctly. But then again it is always a gamble on any car.

i love how your assumptions are so off, but that is expected when a fool, as such as yourself, just makes blind accusations. i was only speaking for myself. i was not telling the people of this blog to live the life style i am with my girlfriend. my girlfriend and i are both logically derived, thus we both agree to independence. it saves SO much hassle if you actually do live this way, but thats besides the point.

when i say beater, i mean a car usually 5-6 years old from the current date of time. is a 2003 G35 not safe enough? i think it sure is, and my wife can drive whatever she wants. if she wants a Q7, than she will buy it and i will most likely help with the down payment, but why the hell should i buy her a 50+grand SUV when i have wants to? like the GT-R and around-the-globe-trips? doesnt make sense to me. i am not whipped, nor is she. its equal, end of story.

you might like the traditional sense of the husband cashing out everything and going into tons of debt, but not me. im nothin like that.

Here in Middle east too, R class resale is the worst in it's class. It's a good car though but quite problematic, so i hope you experience good reliability. BTW after reading your needs, an R350 would have been an even better and affordable choice.

Here you can have a good 2007 R350 for the price of a new Mitsubishi outlander or Kia carnival minivan.

The RX350 was solid. There were several issues with it however.

1. Looked too similar to the prior generation
2. Interior was nice but no better than a decked out Highlander
3. Past history with two Lexus models showed great mechanics but suspect trim and electronics (our old RX was returned as a lemon)

And last but not least was the fact they are WAY too common. Every school teacher at my son's elementary car seems to drive either an IS or RX.

So part of experience of a luxury car is a unique factor, which the RX no longer has in out area.

It is important to mention no SUV was ruled out for reliability issues, though we were concerned a bit with Lexus leather durability.

009, while I applaud your reasoning and sound judgement on what is a great deal compared to a new "ML", did you really have to get a booooring silver one (so 2002) with an ugly "tan" interior and wimpy 15 inch (last time I saw these was 1995)rims!!!!???? Was the wifey really set on silver/tan/and German delivery truck wheels?
Now.......for my wife/girlfriend I would have bought the same vehicle- but please, oh please, not godawful silver w/tan. Did u even consider the very elegant Black w/tan interior? Or the the understated but sporty/classy ML550 five spoke rims?

Well first of all is really is an off silver/blue combo I believe they call it Alpine Rain. So it does standout compared to a silver. But a consideration here in Texas is that dark interiors and exteriors get VERY hot in the summer (it is already 103 here in the day) so the lighter the color the better. We had the option of a black one too, however after owning a black car in August when it is almost 110 degrees outside you soon learn Black is no longer your favorite color.

The wheels BTW are 16's not the 15's you thought they were. Besides wheels can easily be changed if she want to.

What was 009's current vehicle to be replaced? If by "end of its life" do you mean it breaks down a lot and it is more expensive to maintain it?

IMO, it would be a Q5. The smaller cargo space is not much of an issue if you don't plan on loading it to the max everyday or at least 3 times a week.

Actually it was a Honda Pilot (work vehicle) that ended lease early. We actually got out of the lease early because the unanticipated strength of the used car market drove the value up. Basically it wasn't due until December but the pay off and the real world value were the same much sooner into the loan. We actually made some money on the deal from the Pilot.
