As If They Haven't Asked For Enough? Detroit 3 Now Asking For Property Tax Relief

Detroit's Big Three automakers are taking aggressive steps to slash their property taxes in Michigan, a move that could save the ailing automakers tens of millions of dollars.

But for financially strapped communities, the fear of losing desperately needed tax revenue from one or more of their largest taxpayers already has prompted some to play it safe by cutting local services and work forces.

Michigan is ground zero for General Motors Corp.'s nationwide review of the millions it pays to various communities in property taxes, including personal property tax on equipment, and GM is seeking deep relief.

Records show the bankrupt automaker has sought to reduce its taxes by as much as 80 percent in many cases.

Why not? Frankly any business that employs a large amount of people and creates incomes for a community should be exempt from property taxes anyway.
