Meanwhile, at the Audi design meeting...
"Hey, lets not even bother making front fascia anymore! Lets just make the entire thing a grille!"
"Oh my god, brilliant!"
"Why didn't we think of this sooner!?"
"Hey let's throw an 'S' on their so people will feel special and buy it!"
"We are the greatest design team in the world...lets go get ice cream"

a guy.....
maybe the reason Audi isn't following the footsteps of others is that they didn't want the Q7 to have a big a** nose on the front of their new SUV. Why don't you imagine a small grill and two headlights and the whole rest of it, cladding or a bumper. Wow, now that's a design.
No, what's a radical and new design is what's in that picutre. Right on Audi.....stray from the pack.

The pictures may make the Q7 look somewhat odd and too front-heavy in terms of styling, but pictures do not do the car justice.
Just like the rest of the Audi range, unless you can appreciate one in real life, you may miss the point.
Audi designers have done a stellar job of subtly bringing the nose out further than the headlights, and very carefully pulling the the surfacing on either side of the grille back, giving an almost (don't laugh, I'm serious) supercar-like look to the car. Impressive work for an SUV.
Check out the front of the Bugatti Veyron. The nose is pushed foward from the headlights and side vents, which 'curl' back toward the front wheels, reducing the slab profile that would have resulted due to the cars width.
Audi employs this technique throughout the new range, toning down the effect of the large grille while retaining the solid look a large front end creates.
The Q7 is very pretty, but menacing all the same.

001's version is much better IMO.

...This machine is awesome. And I for one love the big grill teatment Audi has going on. It's distinctive and has a strong identity. Unlike BMW whose cars lately seem to be incorporating Japanese-like designs.
If I were a SUV man then this would definitely make choosing one a chore.
Right now Audi is making the best cars out there, nevermind whose cars are quicker or who is selling the most. Audi get it right. IMO

I'm not crazy about the HUGE grill, but it is passable if you have a European front license plate. Unfortunately, for those of us in the US who live in States that require a front plate, it will look like garbage.
