JD Power APEAL Study Shows Tides Are Changing, Hyundai Genesis & VW CC Take Top Spots
Hearts have been broken and dreams were smashed.  Don’t believe me?  The J.D. Power APEAL study’s results were released today and it is clear that tides are turning in the automotive kingdom.

APEAL is an acronym for automotive performance, execution and layout.  The purpose of the survey is to understand how pleasurable new vehicles are to own and drive, based upon owner evaluations of 90 attributes.  According to J.D. Power, 80,900 new owners of 2009 model year vehicles participated in the study after the first 90 days of ownership.

As a whole, the automotive industry average improved to 779 points from 770 – on a 1,000 point scale.  J.D. Power says that this is linked with lower fuel prices, owners switching to more fuel efficient models and automakers designing, and producing, more fuel efficient autos.

A very telling statistic from the survey showed that more than one-half of all the vehicles surveyed were powered by four-cylinder motors.  One year ago, this figure was merely 39 percent.

The gap between domestic cars and imports is beginning to close and proving this were the study’s four most-improved brands: Dodge, Pontiac, Buick and Cadillac, respectively.  Sadly, the Pontiac which has made such improvements will not be around much longer.

If that is not enough, the overall gap between domestics and imports has shrunk as tight as the Strait of Gibraltar.  In 2008, the gap stood at 15 points and in 2007 it was a mammoth 27 points.

In 2009, it was only five points.

Vice president of automotive research at J.D. Power, David Sargent, said “Consumers have a great array of appealing vehicles to choose from by both domestic and import brands.”

In addition, there were some heart breakers in this year’s survey.

Smart’s fortwo took highest ranks in the sub-compact car segment, edging out the Scion xD and Honda’s Fit.  In the compact car segment, the MINI Cooper took the crown.  Volkswagen’s Jetta, said to have made vast improvements in fuel efficiency due to the TDI model, landed behind with Mitsubishi’s Lancer.

In the entry premium segment, Volkswagen’s Passat CC wowed owners and took the highest ranking position.  Closely following were the Cadillac CTS and Audi A4/5.  Where was BMW’s 3-series and Mercedes’ C-class?  For the CC this is a tremendous victory, proving that the people’s manufacturer can build luxury vehicles too.

A surprise showing by Pontiac’s G8 sedan in the large car segment was not enough to beat Nissan’s new Maxima, which took the top spot.  Hopefully in 2010 the new Chevrolet Caprice has enough mustard to take over the segment.

But, I have saved the best for last.

Easily the largest defeat of the survey was left to the midsize premium car segment where the new Hyundai Genesis took top honors.  Right behind were the Jaguar XF and BMW 5-series.

Clearly, this shows that Hyundai has what it takes to play with the big boys.  In the 2010 survey, will we see the upcoming Equus unseat the S-class?

How valid is this list?  Do you think that J.D. Power’s findings are inconclusive?  What do you say, Spies?

A Hyundai Genesis more appealing than a Jaguar XF or a BMW 5 series? Who are these people? They should be slaughtered and put out of their misery.

"The purpose of the survey is to understand how pleasurable new vehicles are to own and drive, based upon owner evaluations of 90 attributes."

I'm sure that some of the 90 attributes have to do with price/value stuff, hence the Genesis scoring well.

1. Hyundai Genesis
2. Jaguar XF and
3. BMW 5-series

No surprises at all here, not everyone out there are badgewhore posers... Genesis costs half as much and offers 2x more standard features than both Jar and BMW, and don't forget, it's tons more reliable as well, go Hyundai!

JD Powers has a "survey" for about any and every bent on car ownership... WHY?? SO that any company can claim that they were "NUMBER ONE in the JD Power's survey".... and then have to PAY JD Powers for the use of the "results" and JD Power's "seal of approval"....

JD Powers CONTROLS the data....It is all market BS and a business model that JDP uses to extort $$$ from car companies....

Name one other company that does ANY of these types of rating..

If you want better data and more honest data, albeit with a non-car enthusiast view, see Consumer reports.. TO them a car is an appliance...

The study only indicates that most new Genesis and CC owners are thoroughly pleased with their new cars. It doesn't detract anything from anyone else. Don't let it upset you. It's just another automotive study.

Surprise surprise, people are starting to realize that some brands just charge a lot of money for the badge? It's the information age. Brands like Hyundai and Kia will prosper if they have the product because more and more consumers are knowledgeable now.

HyundaiSmoke, it has been said that blacks can't be racist, but you are a enigma, wrapped up in a riddle shrouded in mystery. You love freedom and the ability to speak your mind that is intrinsic with the capitalistic environment made possible BECAUSE of democracy but are socialistic in tone. What are you really?

Plus the Supreme Justice candidate Sotomayor don't need your wasted emotion or pity. She is on the top of the food chain socially and wouldn't look twice if you were in need. She is a Social Elitist. She will never shop at Walmart, go to the local grocery store or grace the racks of Macy's. Her cars are purchased and brought to her, clothing shipped and her regular eatery you couldn't get in even as a waiter. She like so many Social Elitist, has isolated themselves from the masses for a reason. No matter what color you are in this arena, the agenda is what matters. She will do just fine if not confirmed to the Supreme Court.

2009 Apeal Nameplate ranking:

1. Porsche
2. Jaguar
3. Cadillac
4. Audi
5. BMW
6. Mercedes-Benz
7. Lexus
8. Infiniti

It seems like Porsche is booked on number one.
Jaguar is definitiv upscale. Their new cars are great, and they get the reward. congrats!
Cadillac is for me a great surpris. Its either that their custumers don“t expect to much from them, or the really improved dramatically.
Audi is ahead of its two big rivals, cudos!
And BMW and Mercedes is still ahead of the "me too" luxury versions.
Fair enough, nothing to worry about. We can all got into the weekend smiling.

The words Hyundai & Volkswagon are retarded looking words to begin with. There's no visual apeal to these words let alone the generic apeal of these brands. They'll never be anything more than generic brands for the mass affordable crowd. However this does not mean that the majority of buyers will purchase Hyundai,Volkswagon or the likes. It's human nature. What's in a name will always be the greater influence. It's like comparing or putting Hyundai in the class with Merc,BMW,Lexus,Infiniti,Audi,Porsche,Ferrari,Lamborghini,Aston Martin, hopefully you get the picture cause it ain't going to ever change no matter what Hyundai or Volkswagon does. That's just the way it is on planet earth.

I'm here to tell you. I'am not afraid to tell the truth or give my opinion. The Hyundai brand does look better than the image of the Volkswagon. Anyway, I could care less about these generic brands. I can't believe I've wasted my time talking about a freakin Hyundai and Volkswagon!
