BMW 5 Series GT Sneek Peek

BMW 5 Series GT Sneek Peek

Two weeks ago at the BMW Performance Center in Spartanburg, we attended a preview of the upcoming BMW 5 Series GT.  Ever since BMW has unveiled their latest gimmick, the 5 Series Gran Turismo subject has been widely debated on our website, but also by many other auto publications.

What we’ve learned in the past few years and after many new product launches was that some cars are really meant to be seen in person before any judgment can be passed on and the 5 GT certainly falls within that category.  Most likely this is the reason why BMW North America has decided to take this interesting approach of introducing a new car to the journalists or even better said: giving us a sneak peak of what to expect since the model displayed in Spartanburg was not yet production  ready.

To sweeten the deal even more, we had the chance to go for a ride on the race track, chauffeured around by the professional drivers at M School.

So, let’s dive in and find out more about the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo.

sector- You are soooo totally right! Hah! Silly BMW Poopheads! They are soooo gimmicky with their stupid M3s that win everything, and their silly gimmicky revolutionary designs that the entire world copies, gimmicky turbo-charged engines more efficient than 4 cylinders with the power and torque of V12s, Hydrogen powered cars cleaning the air and emitting water while the rest of the world builds Battery powered cars with non-disposable giant batteries. Hear that BMW?!?!?! You are a bunch of gimmicky Gimmick-heads!!!!

HelloKitty, time to get down from the ceiling and take your medication.

"Ultimate Driving Machine" = gimmick

Nothing more than clever suspension tuning and calibration on cheap MacPherson strut components, firm spring rates and over boosted steering.

"Magic Feel" = gimmick

see above.

BMW runflats = gimmick

A cost saving feature so that BMW can shave $50 from every vehicle, at the same time leaving customers to "enjoy" the bone jarring ride and to cover the expense of replacing non-repairable tires.

"Leatherette" = gimmick

More cost shaving tactics so they don't have to use "real" leather

BMW Free Maintenance = gimmick

A ploy to deceive customers the true cost of BMW ownership, includes measly 2 oil changes and 1 schedule service that's ALREADY included in the MSRP.

X6 = gimmick

a cramped 5000lb $100k "pseudo" SUV with the ground clearance of a sedan, rear visibility of a Lamborghini, compromised seating and cargo space of a coupe and mpg of a "real" SUV.

760hl hybrid = gimmick

"Green" without in any way being green with only 15% savings in fuel using 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8.

iDrive = gimmick

Don't have the tech know-how to do touch screen interface, so they'll have you scroll endlessly to make selections resulting in user fatigue.

You ignorant, ignorant boy. Let's have a big-boy adult converstion, okay?

Runflat tires SAVE LIVES. They prevent blow-outs, and save you, your family, and loved ones from being forced into compromising and dangerous situations such as being stuck in a bad part of town (by your house), or on a dark highway with little shoulder-room where you could easily be stuck by passers-by. This happens THOUSANDS of times per year. Run-flats give people the opportunity to get to a safer place while maintaining control, insuring a safe arrival.

Leatherette is a cost saving tactic so people can enjoy the Ultimate Driving Machine without breaking the bank. Anyone can purchase the Leather if they want it, Moron.

BMW Free Maintenance isn't built into the cost of the car. I know this may be difficult for you to understand, but calculate the inflation over the last 20 years, vs. the cost of BMWs 20 years ago, compare all the numbers. BMWs are more affordable now than they have ever been, with more technology, safety, and performance.

iDrive- Again proving your own ignorance. iDrive allows the user to navigate through loads of options while maintaining a proper driving position, not reaching up for a screen on the dash while careening down the road at 75 miles per hour. You also fail to understand that everything is adjustable via voice commands.

My guess is, however, it is not just your ignorance typing in your comments above, rather your pride and empty wallet. I will continue to drive my BMWs because they are the best performing, safest both actively and passively, most phenominal vehicles produced thus far by man-kind. Not only am I safer, but you driving down the road in your shit-box are safer because I have control over my vehicle in motion. You should thank educated hard-working people like me that are more successful than you! You and your loved ones are safer!

"You ignorant, ignorant boy. Let's have a big-boy adult converstion, okay?"

Sure I'm game, but what's an "adult converstion"? did you mean to type "conversion"? did you have a sex change operation perhaps? hence the Freudian slip?

"Runflat tires SAVE LIVES. They prevent blow-outs..."

that's precisely what the BMW maketroids want you to believe dip shit, in reality, the stiffer side walls and harsh ride of run-flats actually cause more unexpected flats and damage. Have you heard of the "BMW runflat lawsuits"

http://www.sfmslaw.com/pages/cases.php?id=573

BMW owners have had such bad experience with run-flats they've created an entire site LOL.

http://www.bmwrunflattire.com/

What if you blow out a tire on a trip and the nearest tire shop is more than 50miles away? and even when you get there, do they have the "special" tire-changing equipment that can cost $3,000 to $15,000 on hand? LOL.

"Leatherette is a cost saving tactic so people can enjoy the Ultimate Driving Machine without breaking the bank. Anyone can purchase the Leather if they want it, Moron."

yeah but, can you explain why Audi, Benz, Lexus, Acura, even Hyundai Genesis all come EQUIPPED with STANDARD LEATHER SEATING? isn't BMW a luxury brand? I guess NOT! maybe I can explain.... could it be that BMW knows clueless roundel badgewhores like yourselves with delusional fantasies wealth and posturing can be coxed into paying extra for something you should have of gotten for free? probably!

"BMW Free Maintenance isn't built into the cost of the car."

Are you sure? being that base, stripper model bimmers are thousands more than competitor's offerings, kind of works out that you're being charged for it, or maybe your right, maybe the roundel badge alone is worth the extra thousands.

"...know this may be difficult for you to understand, but calculate the inflation over the last 20 years, vs. the cost of BMWs 20 years ago, compare all the numbers. BMWs are more affordable now than they have ever been, with more technology, safety, and performance."

This is true of ANY automobile idiot, just look up any Auto Affordability index -- "Thanks chiefly to incentive programs and steady gains in income, auto affordability has risen to the most attractive levels in 24 years," said David L. Littmann, chief economist at Comerica Bank, You'd have to return to 1978 to find a comparably favorable auto-buying environment." -- http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0UDO/is_22_15/ai_90393535/

Your talking B.S, the first gen iDrive was so bad people were dumping their newly acquired bimmers just so they don't have to use it! there were reports of people tak

I will tell everyone this I never thought I would say this but this model is actually growing on me now. I know its hard to beleive but you got to think of BMW's reputation of "GOING OUTSIDE THE BOX" and they definitely showed it on the 5-GT. They also did it on the bangle 6 and 7 series and people have those by the bundles now. I would say its only going to be a matter of time before this 5-gt takes flight also BMW based the car on one of their best selling models in the line up. Every soccer mom that makes (or husband makes) a household income of $130,000 or better a year they will have it.

Admittedly, this (pic) is by far the best I've yet seen the 5GT look, as the angle as well as the color are rather flattering to the vehicle, but... The bull-bog inspired blunted nose styling, accompanied by that ungainly/graceless rear-end, make for a seriously unfortunate-looking total package. If it does well for BMW - Good For Them~ but I find it to be little more than a half-hearted answer to a question I don't recall anyone asking.

BMW has a nack for finding niche models. The X6 is a gamble that I believe will pay off in the long run. Same goes for the GT models. We here in the states might not agree or realize how a vehicle like his will make a difference here, like Europeans can't understand why we have a love affair with trucks. I personally like the concept, but the application doesn't appeal to me. I do give BMW credit for taking risk, this fuels the imagination of other brands to compete.

Oh No They Didn't!!! Geez, yes they did... the angle portrayed by the picture above is the only one that kinda makes this car look descent because you can't really tell what it is BUT... when you open the link you realize that BMW just produced a monstrosity of a car. What made me write this comment was one of the last pics within the link: the one with the trunk open...that's when I said OMG what are people supposed to do to retrieve their items? crawl in there and hope that you are not swallowed by what ever might be living in that hole. This is the worst design since its cousin the Aztec

Fine, maybe I should have kept seeing the pictures that followed after the cave trunk... but that's my point exactly, I could not even look any further because my eyes hurt after just a few. At least they kept their signature interior, the one that can be found in every other model they make. Wake up BMW before you become the next victim...just ask Porsche

It is not hard to belive that all Bimmers Fan will end loving this car just because it is a BMW...but the fact, I bet, this car won't see 5 years. Time will say who is right. This car is so ugly....OUTSIDE....Inside is another history....the car is great..Who do not admit it, is biased.

I just don't get where BMW is going with their designs. I drive a '05 330 and I can't see myself trading in this car for anything they have right now. About the only thing I would go for is the M3.

I might add...if BWM can sell this in the states then Audi will make a killing with the A5 Sportback if they ever decide to sell it here.

I like it and I hope they come out with a 3 series GT with the twin turbo engine. I would definitely get in to one. I would have gotten a 335 wagon, but it was not an option.
