Officially, official: Ferrari announces the 458 Italia!
After months of speculation and spy shots the crew at Maranello have finally revealed their new mid-engined V8 powered creation to replace the F430. The all-new 458 Italia won't be shown in public until September's Frankfurt Motor Show the details were released early this morning. A new direct-injected 4.5-liter V8 ups the power ante it 570 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. Eighty percent of that torque is now available at an impressively low 3,250 rpm, thanks probably in part to the 12.5:1 compression ratio.

Like last years California convertible, the 458 gets a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox to send power to the rear axle. A lot of work on reducing the internal friction of the powerplant in addition to reduced aerodynamic drag also helps improve the 458s mileage to a combined 17.1 mpg (US) on the EU test cycle. No mention is made so far of incorporating any type of KERS hybrid system which has been rumored. That may come at a later date.

Like its predecessor the the structure is fabricated out of aluminum giving the 458 a dry weight of just 3,042 pounds. This is after all a Ferrari so talk of fuel consumption really does seem pointless. The real question is how quick is it? Based on specs at least, this new coupe does not disappoint. Acceleration to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 3.4 seconds and this is the first production Ferrari V8 to top the 200 mph barrier, now getting to 202 mph.

I agree b7fan, I think it looks brilliant.

I'll be ordering one ASAP to replace my aging 430.

I have to see it in person. But from the pictures, I still prefer the F430 looks more.

Have to hold off my final judgement for when I see it in person, but my first impressions are:

1) Looks great from the side.
2) I think the three exhausts look cheesy. Two would be sufficient.
3) I do not like how the headlights creep up the wheel arches like that.

I think the 430 looks better as well.

Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!! I KNEW those bastards would ditch the 4 rear tail lights. Just like they did with the 599. Sucks. I'd have to call Will Castro and have him add a couple for me.

I love the curves, the way its sculpted. But it front and rear ends aren't really doing it for me.

Agree. The curves are right on. However the rear is way to busy, while the front end is phoned in. The 360 was far and away the best design in the new entry level (HA) Ferrari department since the 355.

wow shows where your taste lies. You think an SC430 impresses you more any Ferrari, Zonda, Lambo...really???

Well i'm not really a fan of the the front yet but from the side it reminds me of an Enzo. The back I don't really mind either and I'm sure it's going to look a lot better once we actually get to see it in motion in real-life pictures. These CG pics aren't that great, they should've had Polyphony unveil their car again like they did with the California.

An SC430 is a GT car if we can even call it that. A TURTLE is more like it.

BELLISMO
Ferrari has made a car that looks like the old prototype race cars from the 60's and 70's combined with simplistic modern take with lines and curves like a Victoria Secrete model with the face of a sociopathicpathic destroyer of all worlds. These shapes combine both masculine and feminine design elements that make the car beautiful as a whole. You have to see it in person and from other angles to appreciate the simplicity of the design. All this equals = TOTAL DOMINATION Italian Machismimo

When you put the best engineers in the world together, take away budgets, and say have fun, just make it clean as the only restriction this is what happens. You build the good stuff ;) No Turbo's needed, no superfluous waste, just efficient bad ass power with the technology to make it happen. They also have grades of mettle today they didn't have, or could not get 10 years ago that help ;)

You have no clue how reliable modern Ferrari has become this car will require only 11 hours worth of routine maintenance in the first 3 years of ownership versus 50 hours for the previous F-430. They never really broke down if they were maintained properly, the problem was shad tree mechanics that ruined a lot of classic models and improper maintenance. Ferrari's maintenance is based on TIME and Millage, therefore your assumptions are premature and ignorant since you do not know the brand very well.

Yall missing my point.

Jap can warrant their 9K rpm easily, and now if italian can also then german better catch up too. It'll be a good thing for everyone!

I would like to retract my statement. The car looks pretty imposing, and with a car that would cost a lot, attention is what I want. :P
The 458 is actually pretty amazing, and naming it Italia is even better.
The front grille isn't bad either.

Ferrari's have always looked beautiful and superflous in design, as if a splash of liquid metal was poured over the chassis to let the car form and mold its own design character. This 485 Italia just looks too sinister in some regards, leaving different design impressions from the front, side & rear. Black is the only color that will weld and improve on the aggresive design-attitude, which Ferrari should have debut the car with.

In the world of motoring, there is always a choice between listening to the common sense or going completely crazy.

ENGINE
common sense: use a lower revving lower displacement forced induction engine
craziness: use a high revving larger displacement naturally aspirated engine

DRIVE
common sense: use the all wheel drive
craziness: use the rear wheel drive

GEARBOX:
common sense: offer the supermodern robotized automatic transmission only
craziness: offer the manual transmission option

BODY:
common sense: make a car possibly practical and usable, even if it will be heavier
craziness: make a car completely unpractical but as light as possible

It really deserves some special praise that Ferrari keeps with the crazy side all the time and therefore makes the world of supercars so full of colors (and that they don't introduce a rebadged diesel commodity SUV under their brand like one of their competitors too!)

if you look at the car from the rear you'll see next to the tail lights a mesh grille, which looks like they took from the LF-A. Also what it looks like they took from the LF-A was the exhaust system, being 3 tail pipes except not in a triangle form but still in the middle between the rear diffuser. from the side it looks nice, but the headlights throw off the front. the cockpit looks extra skinny at the rear as well- but overall it's 90% hot. i especially like the wheels and taillights!

Ok...First of all....IT IS BEAUTIFUL. But that is hardly a surprise. Anything to replace the 430 was going to be good looking.

Porsche has the benchmark to beat now....I think The next 911 Turbo (998) will be similar in its stats to this one.....How are they going to manage that with a 3.6 or a 3.8 liter engine? I dont know...but this is what it will have to beat and these are approximately the stats for the next Porsche 911 Turbo. It will generate about 550 hp and be an excellent car to drive.

dlindlin - 7/28/2009 7:39:07 PM
+2 Boost
Honestly speaking I don't know if Porsche need to beat it. You really think this F450 will run faster than 911 turbo on Nurburgring?

Anyway, for the sake of number, Porsche can

1. Decrease the weight to 2700 lb
2. Up the engine to a TT 4.5 L V8

Both are unlikely. The first requires carbon fiber everything, and the second one will make 911 almost undrivable, dynamic-wise.

The only way around? Create a new MR positioned higher than 911. This is especially important now that Porsche is part of VW.
