Over 4,000 Vehicles Purchased On First Day Of Cash For Clunkers Program

Over 4,000 Vehicles Purchased On First Day Of Cash For Clunkers Program
American motorists looking to scrap their clunkers already have purchased more than 4,000 new vehicles under the $1 billion "Cash for Clunkers" program.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said that as of early today, 4,026 vehicles had been purchased using vouchers totaling $17,035,500.

After administrative costs of up to $50 million to run the program, that still leaves $933 million in the pot. The program ends Nov. 1 if drivers haven't used all of the money.

The best application of government funded incentives in a long, long time.

What is the number of vehicles purchased in a given day (prior to the program)? Just want to see a comparison...

so only 80 cars per state?
seems a bit underwhelming.

I would expect it to increase. A lot of deals probably had to wait a bit until glitches were ironed out.

So for every person that actually qualified into this govt scam 76,015 people have not done or qualify yet. Quite under whelming.

Did you really just divide the population of the USA by 4000? lol, cause buying a new car is a daily occurrence for every man woman and child in America.

exactly. his attempt to debunk the clunker program has failed miserably. Children under the legal driving age, some senior citizens, people still paying on their current cars, etc wouldn't qualify for the program. the CFC program wasn't meant to appeal to every possible car owner, but to simply entice owner of older, less efficient cars to upgrade and help the economy at the same time.

Last fart of the doomed socialism.

If people don't buy cars, it means they cannot afford them.

So the socialism lures them with cash to do something they don't want to do (buy a car) and if some of them actually swallow the bait, others get robbed from their money to sponsor the consumption of those lured.

USSR was 100% socialism. They went bust.

Downtoearth really is right. The problem with Communism and Socialism is that, depending on what specific versions you are talking about and if you are referring to theory or empiricism, the lines between the them become indistinguishable. While many more modern socialists advocate a more egalitarian approach, the early literature, notably that of Henri de Saint Simon- the man that invented the word "socialism", centered around the analysis of common / government ownership of the means of production and industrial planning.

The failure of communism is the interim period of socialism that it goes through. No communist system has ever developed beyond that point. If you want to know why my suggestion is that you read "The Road to Serfdom" by Nobel-Prize winning economist F.A. Hayek.

Frankly, I have more respect for the communist than I do for the socialist- certain communists can argue that their system has never existed. The socialist cannot argue that.

I often wonder what exactly people think communism is- they act like they are ALL government worshipers, when often I find that people are really confusing it for socialism. Although again, at times the lines between the two do blur and that depends on what specifically is being referred to. For example, there is such a thing as anarcho-communism (I have heard some also call this Syndicalism- although I hesitate to call that correct. I always understood that as something rather different) where along with a communist system- they abolish the government.

Why is the incorporation of more socialistic behaviors automatically branded as a bad thing when capitalism run amok nearly toppled our economy.

Wouldn't it make sense to introduce some behaviors that COULD be called socialistic in order to balance our overly capitalistic behaviors of the recent past?

I think this is exactly what we need to get our grasp away from foreign oil. Once everybody trade their gas hogs chevys and dodges in for a prius or a more fuel effiecent diesel like the Bmw 335d. We can save the POLAR BEARS....LOL

Im so sick and tired of the brainwashing of oil is the enemy. The USA Has more oil, coal and natural gas to last 750 years and the technology to manufacture I clean. The USA is not a part of OPEX. We would be independent of foreign oil. Drive what we want to drive and not have to be forced to drive some micro mini unsafe bizzobamamobile. I dont know about anyone else but Im pissed everytime we lose more of our choices.

Do you mean like when FDR gave the order for US Military pilots to attack Japanese targets before the Pearl Harbor attack?

Then it was the Libs that used 2 atomic bombs on innocent school children.

Then it was a Lib that got us into the Korean war.

Then it was a Lib that created the Gulf of Tonkin that got us into the Vietnam war.

There was more torture that happened under the Libs than under the Republicans.

This program is a total sham. If your current car qualifies and it is worth more than the credit you are going to receive then you should not trade your car in. So basically they are only targeting cars from 1984 - 2001 or 2002. And regardless of the car that is turned in under this program even if it cal be resold is going to be turned into scrap.

Hmmmm... Who pays for all of these cars getting thrown away and credits being given out? The people who have jobs and don't even use this program.

Is the United States becoming communist...

My 1998 Pontiac GTP did not qualify for this rebate, however I traded it for a vehicle that does, G8 GT. :) The concept behind this plan is so stupid. If you want to save fuel, ride a bike, or buy a fuel miser. If you want others to save fuel, treat cyclists more friendly & stick it.
