White House Bows To Fox News Pressure And Removes Orwellian Language From Cash For Clunkers Disclaimer

White House Bows To Fox News Pressure And Removes Orwellian Language From Cash For Clunkers Disclaimer
On Friday, the Glenn Beck show, a viewer alerted him via Twitter that the Cash For Clunkers Website had some Orwellian language in the dealers disclaimer.

Here's a sample of some of the language:

"when logged onto the CARS system, YOUR computer is considered a federal gov't system and is the PROPERTY of the US gov't!!!!!!"

ALL files on YOUR system may be INTERCEPTED, monitored, recorded, copied, audited, inspected and disclosed to enforcement personal both FOREIGN and domestic!!!!

We're talking PURE KGB style language...on a CAR site!!!!

After the Beck show the liberal blogs lit up saying Beck was NUTS, a RIGHT WING LUNE, etc.

Well guess what?

Today the White House agreed with Beck and has issued this statement (see slides).

Sounds good right?

Well, kind of.

The legal analysts say EVEN with the language removed, they can STILL do EXACTLY what the original disclaimer said they could.

Ahh, 001, it's only for dealers...what's the big deal?

Dealers work from home don't they sometimes just like us, right?

If they did and had some questionable info on their PC that the gov't grabbed, their FAMILIES are liable even though they NEVER agreed to the disclaimer.

This is one scary road if this type of 'Big Brother' like shenanigans are starting on a stupid car site.

Imagine the power if they make us all disclaim this stuff when the free healthcare system goes into effect?

Time to get off the grid!!!! LOL!

And special props to the guy who saw this, twittered Beck and to Fox for airing it.

A little education about warmongering Libs.

It was the Libs that first bombed Japanese targets in China before Pearl Harbor.

It was the Libs that dropped two atomic bombs.

It was the Libs that got us into the Korean and Vietnam wars.

JFK was President when the Cuban missile crisis happened.

It was President peenut Carter that looked like a fool when the Iranians took our Embassy and everyone in it hostage.

The WTC was attacked the first time when Clinton was President.

I thought Libs were peaceful?

dropping those nukes was the right thing to do. it ended WW2 and destroyed the imperial japanese regime. It probably saved lots of lives too, since WW2 ended literally 5 days later because of the nukes.

Korea was the right thing also. look at north korea now- that's what south korea would be like had it not been for that war.

Vietnam was a mistake, i'll give you that

Liberals know how to win wars, conservatives don't. it's as simple as that.

and there's nothing wrong with a little socialism. we have gov. run military, police/fire departments, schools, roads, libraries...Communism and pure capitalism are both failures. the only system that works is a mix of both. we just need to find the right mix.

you pure capitalism moronic right wingers are just as crazy as communists. your idiotic experiment is OVER. Your ideas= FAILURE

Now now, that might be a bit of manipulation, EL34. Although, Hiroshima and Nagasaki were chosen because they were still relatively intact, as most of the industrial centers had already been heavily bombed. This is because they wanted there to be no ambiguity about the weapon's power. I really don't think it was about experimentation- it was about sending a clear message- a message borne of destruction and death, but a message.

I95SPEEDINGTICKETS so Oprah and Jerry Springer at one time had the same type of viewing audience, stay at home individuals, not possibly working, a fringe tinny percent that is into such viewing is a joke at best. Oprah has elevated her message and moved on.

News networks are a representation of a much larger viewer demographic and when you have Katie Corick ( if that is her name spelling) ABC News, MSNBC, BBC America, etc, competing for viewership, everything changes. You have CEO, Doctors, Teachers, Home Makers, Students, Grandparents, people from all walks of life up in the mix. Admit it. Fox News is extremely relevant. We might not agree with the message, but put it this way, the L.A. Times, San Francisco Herald and the like would either still be around or not be in trouble of extinction if their message was less was hitting the right notes. Fox can be right leaning at times and to some degree that does bother me. But at least they try to have opposing viewpoints on and fake being fair and balanced. See if that is the case with MSNBC (Mostly Sad Narcissistically Bitter Crybabies) they are left and proud of it. Air America, left and proud of it. Their ratings also reflect how many is into their point of view. Their viewpoint isn't bad just not what most viewers agree on. Very few will ever admit to watching Fox, like not many admit to watching porn, but it is what it is.

Fox news and the right wingers in general are very VERY good at what they do- control, fear monger, and brainwash the american people and push their propaganda. Lenin would be proud.

it's just that the message is not resonating any more. it is irrelevant. it's only a matter of time before they completely lose touch with the people. the senior citizens who voted for Bush and who watch faux news fanatically will be dead within a decade. I'm 100% sure we would be in the second great depression right now if the stimulus had not passed. how is that fear mongering? All the sings at the end of 2008 were pointing to another great depression. many of the criteria were actually worse than they were before the 1929 collapse.

and when herbert hoover cut spending during an economic disaster in 1929 it created an even bigger mess.

Obama was right. The stimulus was needed and it worked. Stock market is up 50% since march. home sales are up 4 months in a row. number of jobs lots a month are down significantly compared to 6 months ago.

conservatives were wrong yet again. shocking? hardly. I honetly can't remember a single prediction they made that came out true- from saying that the Clinton taxes won't create jobs (21 million jobs under clinton and huge economic growth) to Iraq war lasting 6 months, WMD's, fundamentals of our economy being strong...I mean, you name it, and republicans are WRONG on it.

He got lucky; in 1994 we got a 'Contract With America' and a Republican Congress. Who writes all the tax bills and spending bills, again? Oh yeah, that would be the Congress. And history shows that taxes and spending were both held in check during Clinton's terms. Wish I could same the same of Bush II, but he had a liberal Congress, and seriously lacked a spine with regards spending bills that crossed his desk.

A few things do come to mind when this issue is considered objectively (read: neither right- nor left-wing lunacy):

- This condition applies to the dealers only, not the general public. Access should be from business machines that connect into the CARS Government network.

- As mentioned above, the relevant parties log into a Government Network. They (Govt.) HAVE to ensure that everything being done WHILE CONNECTED (not in perpetuity as Glenn beck suggests) can be monitored, logged, traced, tracked, etc. for security reasons. I seriously doubt they would access your data at whim (the harsh language is really more of a deterrent to potential criminals), but only if they felt there were illegal activity going on while connected. If they did not follow security measures, the Obama detractors would be the very first to go, "Unsecured access to Government Networks! Terrorists can exploit this! Obama is endangering the country! The sky is falling!"

- Correct me if I'm wrong, but is it any different than when CPAs file taxes online? I don't know the specific language, but I think there is generally the same condition of monitored use.

- If you've got nothing illegal to hide, why the worry anyway? If you don't feel comfortable with one machine, use another, a "clean" one. Far be it from me to suggest intrusion of privacy. You are logging into a Government website; it's not exactly private anymore now, is it?

Besides, anyone who knows anything about the Internet knows that this could always happen anyway. Everything that travels back and forth on the Net can be followed by your ISP, and if necessary, by the Govt. Such would not be right (except where warranted - crime, etc.), but my point is the compromise has always existed; the indignation seems more Obama-bashing than genuine concern.

And before comparing it to the Patriot Act, remember that said Act would've given Govt. the right to invade your privacy at their discretion, right or wrong. Here, we're talking about you logging into the Government's website; I don't think it's far-fetched to expect them to monitor that connection.

The language may have been changed, but make no mistake, the security will be enforced. As long as it is not abused, it is an inevitable and necessary compromise which does not necessarily lead to intrusion on privacy.

TechRightGuyTechRightGuy - 8/4/2009 7:55:52 AM
+2 Boost
Your understanding of what is required for secure computing is seriously flawed (think on-line banking.) That language has nothing to do with security.

But, your willingness to give away liberty and privacy, well, that's downright scary.

dotunodotuno - 8/4/2009 10:05:08 AM
+1 Boost
Trust me, the last thing I want is an invasion of my privacy. My point is simply that privacy is to some extent compromised when on the Internet, like it or not. It is public space, no different than outdoors in the real world; imagine how ridiculous I would seem to complain about people observing my behavior in a public park.

Again, online banking, while it doesn't require "ownership" of your computer, nonetheless binds you to terms. Even if the language doesn't state it, does the bank not know what you are doing online? And by extension, can the Government not have access to that information if they wanted to? There you go.

Complaining about this is no different than those who wonder how a non-discrete picture they posted to a blog is available all over the Net. The reality is once on the Net, you are no longer in the privacy of your own space. What you simply cannot afford to be accessible online must be taken off a computer connected to the Internet. If it's not the Government, it very well may be hackers.

Claiming ownership of your machine when logged in is pushing it, no doubt, but it's hardly a different approach than when entering a Govt. building and having potentially dangerous items taken from you. Unless this enforcement is abused, only the dangerous item will actually be taken.

You have the freedom to opt out; your are not being forced. It's really more of a deterrent primarily to those who may try to hack, upload malware, etc. It's no different than connecting your own laptop to your employer's company network; your activity can and possibly is being monitored. I think the language was simply improperly worded; I doubt the Government really cares about your Poconos getaway photos; your haxx0rzPwnag3.exe file, maybe.

Or maybe they are datamining to submit the info to advertisers who will bombard you with promotions tailor-made to your perceived interests (I'm not being sarcastic). Maybe there is validity to the outcry; I just doubt this when you consider it's a site that will be accessed mostly with company (and not personal) computers, by a very minuscule fraction of the population (dealers only).

Ideally, such enforcement should not be warranted, but ideally cyber-criminals and criminals in general shouldn't exist either. It's not necessarily the best way; I'm just realistic to what the world is today, and how protection inevitably compromises privacy to some extent.

The critical question is how to achieve the balance, protecting without infringing, without abusing the compromise. But anyone is sadly mistaken who believes this is a problem with the Obama administration; this reality has been existent for a long time; Obama administration simply made the "mistake" of revealing it.

That Obama Kool-Aide is so good!!! I guess we'd be better off with a political party in charge that takes it talking points and apologizes to a radio personality Rush Limbaugh? Obama is the best that America can do at the moment. Can someone name another individual better suited for the job? If not, then shut up and get out of the way.

There was a great editorial in a Newspaper that I love to quote, it sums up the presidential race to a tee:

On one side, you have a Candidate that can't lose(McCain) in a party that can't win(Republican), and on the other, you have a Candidate that can't win(Obama) in a party that can't lose(Democratic).

Unfortunately the Republican party's mis-steps overcame Obama's inexperience and here we are.

Do you honestly believe if say,if the Republicans didn't ruin it for McCain that Obama would have a chance? Get Real.

I am not sure why you libs hated Bush so much, he was the biggest Liberal in conservative clothing I have ever seen.

After reading some of the posts here you would think that 911 happened under the Clinton administration. LOL!!! It happened under the Bush administration idiots. It happened because Bush ignored the CIA. But the folks here would love to have people believe that it was Clinton's fault. What a bunch of delusional folks we have here. I'm not surprised, they watch Fox news. Next.

"When did Obama become a black man, last time I check, his mother was white, he was raised by his white grand parents.........".

I guess I'm the first person to refer to Obama as "Our Nations First African American President"?

Anyway I'll correct it. "Aint no Half-Black Man running this country without a fight".

What do you expect? The race card is the first one thrown on the table the minute the liberals feel a bit threatened.

The GD Democrats are the ones who supported/fostered segregation and slavery to begin with! Now you are preaching freedoms, equality and liberties? Get a grip!

Now the only thing the Democrats are good at, is saying what is necessary to get a vote - so sad.

I am surprise nobody has just come out with it. It is as if we are missing the point:

Amendment IV

'The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized."

Amendment V

"No person shall... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"

These words are SUPREME LAW.

What about the 2nd Amendment which is being attacked by our super-duper AG.

The 1st Amendment, which is being attacked by this admin by threatening to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine.

The 10th Amendment, by pushing Federal Law down State's throats with threats of withholding federal funding.

The attack on the constitution is on, and that my friends, is the end of the USA as we know it.

You Liberals, under the helm of Holder(puppet of Obama/Pelosi/Reid) are attacking our 2nd amendment rights. I guess they don't show that type of news on MSNBC, Go Keith!

I shouldn't have to rattle off all of the HR#### bills that were voted against the 2nd Amendment, but here is the big one:

U.S. SENATE VOTES DOWN AMENDMENT FOR NATIONAL RIGHT TO CARRY

Any Federal Ban on firearms is a direct violation of the 10th Amendment. The last one went unchallenged, I have an inkling that it won't go so well this time.

Kablaam,

Why do you feel the need to carry around a loaded gun? The last thing this country needs are non trained average Americans carrying loaded guns over state lines. That's what the proposed law that was overturned was about. It was about allowing people to carry loaded handguns over state lines. The Law has been in effect decades before Obama. Just because he didn't overturn it doesn't make it obama's fault why it existed in the first place. Bush also could have overturned that same law but he didn't. Why wasn't there any outrage about Bush maintaining that policy? That's the problem with people these days, they do not pay attention to the facts.

I'm glad that they didn't overturn the law. Only policemen should be allowed to carry loaded across stateliness. And there's a protocol when they do it. Now out of the blue normal citizens should be able to carry guns across state lines? Lunacy.

The attack on the Constitution is nothing new- it has been increasingly ignored by politicians since about the 1860's.

The southern Racists aren't scaring anyone anymore. Their chosen political party isn't in charge anymore. That's why they are being so vocal now. And when the republicans did control things the southern racists couldn't influence anyone beyond the small towns where they live. The racists do not need to be controlled. their divisive hateful rhetoric ensures that any politician associated with them will lose election after election on the national stage. Just like the last election.

That's it for me with Autopsies. The whole thread reads like a paranoiac's dairy. I come here to read about cars, as I suspect the vast majority of people do.
