Nissan working on turbocharged 370Z?
We see nothing wrong with Nissan’s 332-hp 3.7L VQ37VHR engine with VVEL (Variable Valve Event and Lift). In fact, we think it’s one of the best engines on the market next to the BMW’s award-winning 3.0L inline-6 twin-turbocharged unit.

However, Nissan’s powertrain engineering division manager, Tetsuya Takahashi, has indicated that his department is closely studying the possibility of turbocharged engines in their next generation of Nissan vehicles. Speaking to Motor Trend, Takahashi admitted that Nissan is looking to return to smaller displacement engines mated with turbochargers to increase performance and fuel-efficiency.

Of course, that has many Z fans dreaming of a possible future...

the return of the Nissan Z turbo this would be an amazing car probably closest thing to a a Cayman S beater out there if its produced the only it loses to the porsche now is refinement, which at the price of 2 370s I think in this case thats a very small issue. A turbo variant of the G37 would also be interesting as well

The Cayman S as it stands right now probably can't compete with the 370z in terms of numbers. However refinement between Porsche and a Nissan can't even be compared although the 370z's interior is a HUGe improvement on the 350z and I like it a lot. The Cayman and or it's Boxster sibling are great handling cars. Only problem they've always lacked break horsepower. However, some times car buyers don't always look for the power but the experience. From my experience with the Cayman S, it's a nice and refined sports car that you can't call "SLOW". However, the much cheaper, and economical 370z is a bargain to say the least, just like the GT-R!.

370z turbo = mini GT-R. a cayman s can not be considered to be a mini GT-R. forget the interior quality because the Z is about the next corner coming up, not about impressing insecure little girls.

I sat in a new 370z at the last auto show that past through here. Interior quality was amazing, by far the nicest interior I have ever seen. If Porsche plans for it's Cayman S to keep up with the 370z, then they have to improve on all fronts.

Can't argue with such an informed enthusiast like KZ258, when you're right, you're right -

From Top Gear - "Both cars are fast in a straight line. Equally so in real terms. But introduce a few corners and the Cayman quickly, and literally, leaves the Z behind. On fresh, baby's bum tarmac, the Nissan grips with total assurance, but it's readily unsettled by the same surface imperfections that the Cayman just ripples over. Factor in all that power at the rear wheels, stiffly sprung suspension and a short wheelbase, and you have the potential for trouble. The traction control was blinking away in a straight line all afternoon on our test, the driver of the 370Z always sweating to keep up with the serenely composed Cayman. Turn the Z hard into a roundabout and it leans markedly where the Cayman stays comparatively flat."

Of course, when you're an idiot, you're an idiot

even tho i never saw that episode of topgear, i think i can still safely assume the Z still came close to the caymans time despite the huge price gap. usually people now pick on the Z's inferior interior quality compared to the cayman when they already know the track numbers are close as hell. the haters are always trying to nit-pick on the next flaw. because of the price difference, its already a given that the Z will suffer some minor flaws. i dont know why this concept is just so hard to grasp. but i can show you another quote about the Z from the same source.

"you buy the BMW because its, slower, less exciting, more expensive, and less well-equipped" - TopGear.

Bottom line is 370Z and Cayman S buyers won't cross shop. The price gap is too big. However, it's not to say a Porsche owner won't buy a 370Z to whip around for fun. Ok, say we forget the interior aspect, the Nissan is for the bargain buyer, but the performance is awesome for the money, can't deny that. Porsche's are built solid and their respectable so you can't say a Cayman owner is just out to get insecure little girls lol. A car can't make someone get more ladies. It's how you play your game. Don't hate the car hate the player.

@Agent63

i agree with all of what you said. a person a who can comfortably afford a cayman will most likely not even look at a 370z (i know i wouldnt). i was mainly aiming the "insecure girls" comment at the porsche cheerleaders since they always seem to be picking on the Z because its cheaper and whatnot.

With a turbo or supercharged Z,the tuning companies out there will have a big hit. Expect it to be a bullit with a vishnu chip or something equivalant and of course the handling will be on par too.

What Nissan really needs to work on is styling and forget about the turbos.

I think it's the right move, at least in terms of numbers and crowd pleasing.

Otherwise, I still prefer NA. Thing is, NA of Porsche.

Turbos=Sales

People vote with their wallets. The Nissan turbo engine will find its way into the Infiniti G. The turbo engine with it's higher midrange torque is why I bought an '08 BMW 335i coupe over the G37 S or Lexus IS 350 although I prefer the Japanese models for their reliability and interior styling. The i-Drive definitely drives me crazy and the interior of my 335i is Spartan even with Nav.
Once Nissan/Infiniti and Lexus start to turbo their cars I'll switch back to Infiniti and Lexus. I prefer the immediate torque of a turbo over having to rev the engine all they way towards redline. I had a G35 and although it had 298 HP it felt like it had 200 HP until it got past 5000 RPM. The tuning potential is always much easier with turbos also.

uhhh that is probable because the infinity only amkes that much power before 5k rpms.

This would be an awesome idea for Nissan/Infinit. Especially if they turbo charge the Z and G lines, even though they manage to out do the competition with just NA engines.
