No One Can Catch The 3-Series Now – So How Are They Even Going to Come Close After This?

No One Can Catch The 3-Series Now – So How Are They Even Going to Come Close After This?

BMW is poised to completely reinvent the 3-series family for the low-carbon age.

Talking exclusively to Autocar, a senior BMW source revealed that a ground-up rethink of the company’s biggest-selling model will ensure that the next-generation 3-series will “remain relevant even when it goes off sale in 12 years’ time”.

The new 3-series is expected to make its public debut at the 2011 Paris motor show. In its first incarnation, the new model is expected to offer class-leading aerodynamics, with a Cd figure of 0.24, as well as pioneering the use of three-cylinder engines in premium vehicles.

The 3-series is part of a new BMW strategy in which ‘premium’ is defined in terms of environmental compatibility. It is this strategy that has prompted BMW to pull out of Formula One from the end of this year.

The reinvention will step up a gear in 2016 when the 3-series undergoes a mid-life revamp. This is expected to represent the biggest technological step-change in car design for decades.

Sources tell Agent001 it will have LED Corona's, HUD option, Solar Panoramic Sun Roof, DSG option, Class leading MPG, Full internet access and a revolutionary new 'snyc-like' interface rumored from Apple.

Special Thanks to Inspirion7 for the tip.

I see a lot of X6 in that car. Very nice (you know, minus the obvious things that would never make it into production).

I have to say that the this is THE sweetest rendering of a 3 series sedan, it has some acura tl the 2003-2007 model in there. looks like it could be a M3 sedan. i like this but of course BMW will make it look nothing like this and the 3 has always been on top. With the 3 series I wont expect nothing less than spectacular from this car when the new model comes out. But BMW for some reason they always hit it right on the nose with the 3 series and everytime its compared to something comparable i would say about 85% of the time the 3 is on top.

But I am nothing but a 3 series coupe fan dont really care for the sedan version.

Of course the design rendering is speculative, but the idea is incredible. Design language is the last thing locked in. The more I look at the 3 Series, the more I like them. After reading the article, it makes current models seem so obsolete. I'll take an old 2009 M3 Coupe though if BMW has one kinda hanging around, in the back, collecting dust, possibly. Just curious. I'll take it in Interlagos Blue Metallic,
Fox Red Extended Novillo Leather.

Nice spin over the real reason of their withdrawal there.

"Premium" and "three cylinder engine" are mutually exclusive. BMW is killing themselves. I pray my E46 will live forever.

My E46 was the worst car I ever owned, had 5 bent wheels 3 bent A arms, water pump went kaput, power stearing pump went Kaput, the rear differential seals went Kaput, the cd player went kaput, the B fell off the roundel and I was driving an MW instead of a BMW, the kidney grill popped out from it's lousy plastic design, the paint was not very good full of orange peal, the power seats went kaput, The deadpedal even cracked! At 120,000 miles it was consuming a half a quart of oil every 2 weeks. The only thing that held up nicely was the leather!

pennfootball,
I think your case may be a one off, with that many disaster for one vehicle. I don't think you could build a car to have all of that happen intentionally if you wanted to...

ThierryHenry it's called a LEMON and BMW made a lot of Lemons according to consumer reports the 2001 year E46 was one of the most horriific runs BMW has made next to the old 645i

I hear it will have a Nintendo Wii inspired steering interface and the only exhaust it produces are strawberry-scented bubbles.

But I guess we should wait for the facts to come through before discussing/debating this type of crap.

No, they dont mean anything to me because I have friends who drive both of those vehicles. They cannot wait for the day to get in to a BMW. They love my 335i sedan and wish they werent so upside down on their vehicles. I told them to spend the extra cash. There is nothing worse than paying too much for a car you hate to drive!
I know everyone has their personal preference and that is why there is more than one car company in the world, but you shouldnt settle. A hard lesson for my friends to learn.

It looks good but not the Autospies Site. Why?. Cause seems to me that you love BMW over all the other brands, Nothing bad with that but then change the name for BMWSpies or somthing else. You keep news of BMW for weeks or even months just cause they are bimmers. Almost 2 days ago I submit links For all the car enthusiast but they were not posted. Let me guess cause those are not BMW? The 3 series render looks great but the posibility of 3 cylinders on it seems to me as a good idea cause is a budget car, so for the ones not able to buy a 318 or 325 or other more expensive and exlusive brands, then they can chose the 309 or something else. In my personal opinion the only BMW that I see as a very atractive car is the 3 series coupe and the M3, based on that coupe. If the new 3 series looks like that, I won't be worried about the future of BMW cause the GTs series and X6 are already a waste of resources. I wish the New 5 series may have a nice look, for now and test mules looks already outdated .

If you want to see the renders and CGI of the next CLS, follow the links:

So, whats the point of showing us the CLS? I think it is going to look worse! i dont like how the car companies are having the sides of the front bumper pushed out just around the fog light area. That CLS rendering has it, the current 3 series has it and the new pontiac G6 has it. whatever works...

What the heck is all the excitement about, that new 3series looks like a crazed-frankenstein-robot-dog.

So they're gonna introduce 3 cylinder engines (bad idea as the utlimate bloated machines weighs more than you house these days), updating the outdated climate control system, 8-speed auto (copying Lexus again), internet connectivity and adding more "black box loggers" so they can void more warranties... whoop de doo.

I'm more curious as to how the original title can go from

"BMW 'reinvents the 3-series'"

to

"No One Can Catch The 3-Series Now – So How Are They Even Going to Come Close After This"

I guess this is "BMWSpies" after all, lol.

Is very likely that they will develop a very quiet 3 cylinder engine, you know why?, I belive that it will sound as if your neighbor is cutting the grass, so it is better to keep it quiet, sadly all european brands will do the same soon or later.

investor27investor27 - 8/5/2009 10:57:22 PM

I don't understand this 3 cylinder crap. They still have to balance it out, and the added weight will just make it as heavy as a 4-cylinder, so why not just stick to a multi-stage 4-cylinder engine and just same the development costs?

If it's one thing I have learnt about Honda and BMW. No matter how dumbassed their ideas and their designs might be, people flock to them. Remember when ALL mid-sized sedans on sale in the US had a V6 option (Taurus, Camry, etc) and Honda stuck with the 2.2L I4 in the Accord? Didn't matter, the Accord was top if not second best seller without the 6. Remember when Chris Bangle arrived at BMW and EVERYBODY said that BMW's time at the top had come to an end? How wrong WE were. Sit back and wait. I'm not a BMW fan, but the truth is the truth. BMW can do no wrong in this our world. If they say 3-cylnders are workable, then trust them, they will make it work. There was once upon a time when the engineers said that a 5 cylinder was not balancable, nor was a V10. Wrong. Even further back, they said that cars could never go faster than 25mph or people would get severe nose bleeds. Wrong. Experts once said that iron ships would never float. Wrong. So much for expert opinions.

the green movement is gaining steam every day. the world is changing. i bet this freaks out a lot of 1950's conservatards!

you can stop an invading army but you can't stop an idea whose time has come. and the time HAS come

BMW is being very smart. they know this is what people want, and they know oil prices will be through the roof a decade from now when we'll be really feeling the effects of peak oil

I hate conservation, but I'm conservacionist cause I have to tink in my childrens, they will live in the world that we leave in the future. Pay attention on the weather. It is already too late. What BMW is doing well, even if we do not like, is the smartest thing to do, AUDI, Mercedes and almost every brand in the world have planes to reduce emsions, and yes we will have to use smaller engines. Forseen.

big BS article.

First of all, for someone to think that a 3er is "redifining" premium is a crock. There's nothing "premium" about a compact executive class of vehicle.

Second of all, they will not sacrifice performance for a "green" image, not in the 3er.
