Lexus To Reveal Hatchback Concept: Is This The Car To Overtake BMW 1 Series?
An all-new Lexus compact hatchback is in the works, and Inside Line has learned that the concept is scheduled to make its official debut next month at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show.

Designed to go head-to-head with the likes of the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series (a five-door Bimmer is available in Europe), the new small Lexus will use a front-wheel-drive Toyota Corolla chassis, powered by four-cylinder engines. Lexus also plans to sell a top-of-the-line model that will use the same 187-horsepower, 2.4-liter hybrid drivetrain found in the new Lexus HS 250h.

Sources close to the project tell us a production version of the concept will be unveiled at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show. Sales in Europe are expected to start shortly thereafter, but the chances of it coming to the U.S. are slim.

Ditto. This is truly Lexus new design language, fresh and unique. Its derived from the RX somewhat, but the best is utilized. Great form.

it looks like a mazda 3 - just with angles instead of smooth curves.

So Lexus decided to rebadge the Prius and call it a 1 series fighter?

it was only a matter of time before toyota took a corolla and made it a lexus.

LOL

That does not resemble a Corolla in any way.

I like the direction Lexus has taken with this Vehicle. Let's hope the production model doesn't deviate too much. This looks like a Lexus for the young crowd.

It probably will not use the 2.4 engine because that engine is being retired soon to be replaced by the new more efficient and more powerful 2.5

Thats what Ive been thinking. Kinda hoping that 2.4L/HSD2 set-up is replace within 2 years by 2.5L/HSD3. Those should produce some phenomenal numbers.

rendering above is looking very nice. Way better than B class and 1 series. Especially rear door backwards and rims are gorgeous.

It would be easy for Toyota to not only produce it, but undercut the prices of its competitors dramatically. They already have vehicles that they can share parts with their Lexus division.

Won't happen hue76. Your naive at best if not ignorant to think Lexus will touch Audi in Germany especially in the entry level luxury class. The A3 is an iconic and a new one is on the way by 2012 which will just make the Lexus obsolete. It cracks me up how you lexus fanboys think Lexus is something special especially in Europe where it barely registers. Its latest sales are off something like 20% in Europe while Audi is market leader in the premium class throughout Europe. The A1 will even make it harder for Lexus to establish a beach head against Audi. Audi knows how to build entry level premium cars better than anyone. Good luck with your delusional theory that Lexus will bleed the Germans in their home market. The A1 will sell like hotcakes when it debuts in Europe. And it will carry Audi's hybrid drive as well. No way. Lexus should just pack up and head back to the US where it can continue to fool the gullible Americans.
