Toyota officially confirms the Toyobaru sports car
Toyota and Subaru, in a joint venture, plan to build a “fun-to-drive” rear-wheel-drive sports car dubbed the “Toyobaru,” to be launched within the next few years. Toyota owns a stake in Subaru’s parent company, Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.

New Toyota president Akio Toyoda said that they hope to create “an exciting and fun driving experience” that’s affordable as well. At a recent US conference, Toyoda said that he plans to fasttrack the production. Toyota US executive Jim Lentz said that the joint venture would be “great for sales and great for Toyota’s image.” He confirmed that Toyota plans to start mass production of a hydrogen fuel cell car by 2015.

I agree, it could be argued that the Yaris is a fun to drive car...

Sports cars are fun to drive though...the rear wheel drive makes it sound promising.

On the contrary, I say let Subaru handle 99% of the engineering of the car. Subaru has had a far more colourful recent racing history (WRC Rally) than Toyota has. They have a better understanding of what current drivers want (witness the Impreza WRX STi). Toyota on the other hand should handle assembly, where quality can be kept in check.
